IFA TIED UP WITH LG FOR U-19 IFA SHIELD
02.01.2016 : Indian Football Association (West Bengal) today announced the partnership with the multi crore electronics company LG Electronics for the U-19 IFA Shield football tournament. This will be the 120th edition of the competition which started way back in the year 1893 is the forth oldest club tournament in the world. In a media meeting at Kolkata the icon of Indian football Bhaichung Bhutia unveiled the Shield in presence of the AIFF Vise President and IFA President Mr Subrata Dutta, IFA Secretary Mr Utpal Ganguly, Head of Corporate Marketing LG Electronic Mr Niladri Dutta, and ex international footballers Dipendu Biswas, Kalyan Choubey and Aloke Das. QUALIFYING ROUND WILL START FROM 11th FEB where Tollygunge Agragami, Patha Chakra, Bengal Football Academy, Aryan Club, Rainbow SC, Kidderpore Club and TFA will participate .
The IFA Shield is designed as a youth football tournament since last year. The decision was taken by IFA due to busy schedule of All India Football Federation which includes Indian Super League, I League and Federation Cup. This year ten football clubs will going to participate including two overseas football clubs. The football clubs of Kolkata - East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting, United Sports Club, State Bank of Trivancore, U-19 team of AIFF and an overseas team Crystal Palace FC already agreed to participate in the tournament.There will be a preliminary round where the U-19 teams of Premier Division Group A and B will play. The winner of the preliminary round will be eligible to play in the final round.
LG Electronics is a multi crore company acted as a sponsor in various International Football Tournaments in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The football lovers of India are aware of LG Cup of Vietnam and LG Asean Cup of Indonesia where Indian national football team and East Bengal club created history by winning the tournaments. The IFA secretary Utpal Ganguly said, "We are delighted and impressed to have LG Electronics to support for the youth development football in Bengal and extend their support in the oldest football tournament in the country."
While addressing in his speech Bhaichung Bhutia said that next year IFA should take the initiative to host IFA Shield as a tournament for the U-17's. India will be hosting the U-17 World Cup in 2017,so an U-17 Club tournament in India will be a great exposure for Indian football.
The winners of LG IFA Sheild will be awarded with an amount of Rs 5 Lacks, while the second seeded team will get an amount of Rs 3 lacks.
