Aizawl FC entered the final of the Federation Cup. This is Aizawl FC's maiden appearance in the Federation Cup final as the second team from the North Eastern states. In 2009 Shillong Lajong FC were the Federation Cup finalist who lost to East Bengal in tie breaker after an undecided 120 minutes of play. Aizawl FC will meet against the favorites Mohun Bagan on 21st of May at Guwahati.

Aizawl FC displayed an exhibition of good passing football in both the halfs though the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The North Eastern outfit qualified to play the final in away goal advantage as the first semifinal at Aizawl ended without a goal being scored .

Mohun Bagan entered the final of the Federation Cup final. This is the 19th occasion when the Mariners will participate in the final of the prestigious tournament of the country. At Shillong today Mohun Bagan played a safe game against Shillong Lajong FC in the second semifinal and held goal less. Th Mariners utilize the advantage of winning the first semifinal at home where they crashed the North Eastern outfit by a convincing margin of 5-0 and thus qualified to play the final on an aggregate score.

It was a uphill task for Shillong Lajong FC to wipe of the deficit of the first semifinal. Shillong Lajong looked quite positive in their approach could have bagged the proceeding in their favour if they converted the easiest opportunities.In both the cases Shillong Lajong failed to place the ball almost in open goal. In the first session Chinglensana Khonsham headed it just over the cross bar. In the 71st minute Fabio Pena missed a sitter from inside the box with his shot hitting the bar on the right where Debjit was at his mercy.

Mohun Bagan will play against the winner of the Aizawl FC and Sporting Clube de Goa in the final at Guwahati.

AIZAWL FC READY TO PUT UP A STRONG CHALLENGE AGAINST SPORTING GOA

PREVIEW: The newly introduced club in Indian football, Aizawl FC will going to play the first ever semifinal of the Federation Cup at Rajib Gandhi stadium against Sporting Clube on Tuesday afternoon. After a remarkable display at the initial stages the North Eastern outfit is now set to put up a strong challenge against Sporting Clube. Starting as the underdogs at the Federation cup Aizawl FC stunned the defending champions and the topper of the I League Bangaluru FC both at home and away by an aggregate margin of 5-3 are confident to repeat the history against the Sporting Goa.

While interacting in the Official Pre-Match Press Conference, Aizawl FC Head Coach Jahar Das said, “It is a game and whoever takes their chances will progress into the finals. We played well against Bengaluru FC in the last match and we will look to give a good account of ourselves against Sporting Goa too.”

On the contrary Sporting Goa overcame Mumbai FC at the initial rounds are eager to put up and strong fight to their abilities against the North Eastern outfit for a berth in the Federation Cup final.

Sporting Goa’s Head Coach Matues Costa acknowledged the threat that Aizawl FC possess and claimed that the semi-final clash will be a litmus test for both sides. “We have to put our best performance tomorrow. We will have to give our cent percent if we have to get something from the match.”

A TOUGH SEMIFINAL AWAITS AT FEDERATION CUP

PREVIEW - 7.6.16: Mohun Bagan to face the strong challenge of Shillong Lajong FC in the first round semi final of the Federation Cup at Vidyasagar Kriangan, Barasat on Sunday evening. It is expected to be a competitive encounter as the North Eastern outfit are in a dream run after they save the relegation in the recently concluded I League.

After a neck to neck battle in the final rounds, Mohun Bagan finished second in the I League,are the favorites in the Federation Cup as the top two teams of the country Bangaluru FC and East Bengal failed to cross the mark at the initial stages . Mohun Bagan defeated Salgaocar FC in the two preliminary matches by an aggregate margin of 7-2, while Shillong Lajong FC proved superior when they aged past East Bengal by a margin of 3-2 in a contested encounter.

Mohun Bagan qualified to play the knock out stages of AFC Cup, but yet to conquer a domestic competition. Mariners have a lot of variation in their striking force headed by the Haitian International Sony Nordi. Though they are lacking of cohesion in their central defense had to consider a number of unnecessary goal throughout the season.

Shillong Lajong FC can be rated as one one of the competitive football team in the country depends on team game and sheer speed while attacking. The Nigerian midfielder Penn Orji is the live wire of the North Eastern outfit proved his brilliance in the last two matches against East Bengal.

Mohun Bagan failed to cross the barrier of Shillong Lajong in the last two matches.The two teams drew against each other in the two outings in the recently concluded I League. As Sanjay Sen the chief coach of Mohun Bagan are of the opinion that it will be tough fight in the semifinal.While interacting Sanjay Sen said, "Shillong Lajong are a very good side. They got past East Bengal twice and that it itself is a great achievement. We have to be careful since they possess the necessary players to hurt our chances.”
