Total Goal Scored: Brazil 3 : 1 Croatia:
The World Cup is finally set to get underway with Brazil hosting its first match on home soil in 64 years. While the build-up certainly has not been ideal within the country itself, Brazil appear primed to fulfil its hype as it enters the tournament as favourites. This very nearly was not the case. When Neymar rolled his ankle in training on Monday there would have been immediate concern. Although the 22-year-old was able to run off his injury, it was a scare for the nation - as losing Neymar would have been a huge blow - resulting in major changes.
Luiz Felipe Scolari builds his team around Neymar - with some selections made to suit Neymar's game and others having to alter their usual approach to suit the Barcelona attacker. And why not? Neymar is the undoubted star of the side - and a team building around its star is nothing new. Some may have concerns about Neymar after a rather solid season at Barcelona, however the striker had to adjust to being a cog in Tata Martino's starting XI.
His overall performance was actually fairly good, scoring nine and assisting eight goals in La Liga for a 0.84 non-penalty goal contribution per 90 minute average - which is great in a lot of sides but only fourth highest at Barcelona. Still, he has scored 31 in 49 games for Brazil - reaching the half century in terms of caps against Croatia.
That said, Croatia certainly has strengths - with a midfield pairing of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic that would be envied by most nations. The main concern is depth, especially defensively, which will be tested due to left back Pranjic's injury. Pranjic isn't the only first choice option that will be missing from Niko Kovac's match day squad as Mario Mandzukic is suspended after the striker was sent off in the second leg of the qualification playoffs against Iceland.
His replacement will likely be either Wolfsburg's Ivica Olic, scorer of 14 goals for a 0.52 goals per 90 minute average last term, or Hull City's Nikica Jelavic, who had a much better second half of the season after departing Everton for the Tigers.. Either way, Mandzukic will return for the key matches against Cameroon and Mexico.
Is there any doubt that Brazil should be favourites in the opening game? There's strength in all departments with few concerns heading into the tournament. In comparison, Croatia have a headache at the back as left-back Danijel Pranjic is unlikely to feature after picking up an ankle injury in Croatia's final warm-up match against Australia.
