 GOA PRO LEAGUE 2014

28/11/2014: Salgaocar SC 8-0 Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim
SAL : Douhou Pierre 3', Jason Barbosa 5', Darrel Dyffy 11', Dawson Fernandes 48', 56', 70', Bikas jairu

SALGAOCAR PRESS RELEASE :: Needing just a point from their pending fixtures, Salgaocar FC clinched the Goa Pro League 2014-15 in style as they scored a thumping 8-0 win over Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim. The winners led 3-0 at the breather. With this triumph, the Greens annexed their 21st title overall and their second in 3 years.

The first of the Goa Pro League games to be played at the picturesque SAG Ground, Benaulim, the Greens made their intentions clear from the outset with a brisk start to the game. Ivorian Douhou Pierre opened the scoring as early as the 3rd minute when a cross from left back Brian Mascarenhas slipped out of the keepers grasp for Salgaocar's number 10 to bury home. A couple of minutes later it was 2-0, when teenager Myron Borges made a good run down the left flank and crossed beyond the keeper to the other of Salgaocar's U-20 players, Jason Barbosa to nod home.

By the 10th minute it could have well been 4, as both Douhou Pierre and Scottish striker Darryl Duffy missed with only the keeper at their mercy. Duffy however compensated for the earlier lapse by getting his name on the score sheet a minute later, tucking away a Saran Singh cross from the right in the 11th minute.

Thereafter it was all Salgaocar for the rest of the half as they created chance after chance but were wasteful in their finishing. After changing ends, the Greens seemed intent to inflict further misery on Cavelossim as they kept up the tempo and never stopped attacking. Striker Dawson Fernandes came in for Myron Borges and Indian U-23 International Clifton Dias came in for the hardworking Saran Singh. As Cavelossim looked to attack to salvage some pride, they were left exposed at the back. Douhou, Jairu and Dawson combined well with measured through balls and Rosario kept making darting runs on the right flank. Myron set up Jason for his second in the 56th minute before Dawson took centre stage with a superb hat-trick inside the next 25 minutes, all 3 goals courtesy sublime through balls from Douhou Pierre.

Bikash Jairu hit the final nail in the Cavelossim coffin with a scorcher from 25 yards out. It has been a fantastic month of November for Derrick and his boys as they annexed the first ever Durand Cup to be played on Goan soil earlier in the month.

Being unbeaten in 15 games and having 2 trophies in the bag already, Salgaocar FC will have their sights firmly set on the 2 big ones, the Federation Cup and the I-League.

Unbeaten Salgaocar FC look to clinch Goa Pro League title

27.11.2014: SALGAOCAR Press Release : Unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions this season, Salgaocar FC will look to seal the Goa Pro League title when they take on Cavelossim in the Super League phase later today at the SAG ground in Benaulim. 6 points clear at the top, with a game in hand, the Greens need just 1 point from the remaining 3 matches to reclaim the title they last won in 2012-13.

 GOA PRO LEAGUE 2014

It will be their second title this season, having clinched the Durand Cup, played in Goa for the very first time, earlier this month. Salgaocar FC have amassed 26 points from their 10 games thus far, courtesy 8 wins and only 2 draws. As and when the Greens clinch the title, it shall be the 21st occasion on which they will be crowned ‘Champions’ of Goa.

“We have been training extremely hard since the start of the season and I’m glad the boys have been able to execute most of what we’ve practised on the training ground. We will look to give another good account of ourselves tomorrow”, commented coach Derrick Pereira who insists on taking it one game at a time. “Winning the Durand Cup has done the confidence of the youngsters a world of good. In football, self-belief is an important virtue”, he added.

Through the course of the 10 games they have played thus far in the Goa Pro League, such has been the dominance and superiority, that Salgaocar FC have rarely looked like losing. On most occasions, they have scored early and gone to assert their superiority. However, even on the rare occasion when they did concede first, like in the last game against Dempo, the Greens settled in well after the initial setback and rallied to reverse the deficit through a stoppage time winner. In addition, another positive is the fact that 9 different players have found the back of the net.

Salgaocar FC’s pending fixtures include games against Churchill Brothers SC on the 1st and Tuff Laxmi Prasad SC on the 4th of December.

04/12/2014 : Salgaocar SC 2-2 Laxmi Prasad SC
SALGAOCAR PRESS RELEASE : After having clinched the Goa Pro League title with 2 games to spare, coach Derrick Pereira chose to give the remainder of his squad some playing time and they did not let him down as 10-men Salgaocar FC held Tuff Laxmi Prasad SC 2-2, to complete their league engagements in the Goa Pro League unbeaten. The draw enabled Tuff Laxmi Prasad SC claim the Runners-up spot.

The match got off to a relative fast start with both sides seeing the ball in equal measure but neither side able to assert superiority and the ball mostly confined to the midfield. Tuff Laxmi Prasad SC opened the scoring just past the half an hour mark when a Frieman Peixoto corner was headed in by former Salgaocar stopper, Chika Wali. They held on to the one goal lead until the breather.

In the 50th minute, Derrick introduced the experience of striker Dawson Fernandes and Ivorian Douhou Pierre in place of teenagers Myron Borges and Jason Barbosa in a double substitution and that proved to be a masterstroke with the two emerging as super-subs. With the introductions, The Greens found an extra yard in their step and went instantly on the offensive. In the 57th minute, Rosario Mendes sent in a low flat cross from the right that Dawson Fernandes guided past the keeper to make it 1-1.

Just as Salgaocar started asserting control of the game, midfielder Zakeer Mundamparra had his coach and team-mates in disbelief as he was sent off for dissent. Tuff made good use of the numerical advantage to claw their way back into the game. In the 75th minute, a cross from the right was cushioned down smartly by ND Opara for another ex-Salgaocar player, Marcus Mascarenhas to score past Albino Gomes who played in the Salgaocar goal.

A goal and a man down in the 90th minute, a mistimed kick from Brian Mascarenhas found its way through a sea of players in the box to Douhou Pierre to calmly slot home for the equalizer, thereby ensuring Salgaocar FC’s incredible run of 17 games unbeaten in all competitions remained intact.

Having annexed the title, coach Derrick Pereira has now won every major tournament in the country, the I-League, the Federation Cup, The Rovers Cup, the Durand Cup and now the Goa Professional League, both, as player and coach.

22/11/2014 :: Sporting Goa 3-0 Calangute FC

Boima Jerry Karpeh netted a fine brace as Sporting Clube de Goa overcame Calangute Association 3-0 in Gfa’s Goa Pro League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Saturday. Sporting Goa led 2-0 at the interval. It was a comfortable victory for Sporting Goa, who brought back Anthony Wolfe into the side to partner Boima Karpeh upfront, while Glenton Wolfe was rested.

Sporting Goa took the lead after just thirteen minutes, when Boima was lurking to opportunistically tap in a wonderful cross from Anthony. Just before the breather, the Flaming Oranje stepped on the gas one more time, with Boima feeding Mauvin Borges who performed a repertoire of dummies and step-over’s, before letting fly a stiff grounder into the far corner of the net.

In the second session, Sporting Goa continued to dominate possession and kept raining shots on the Calangute goal. If it was not for the heroics of the Calangute custodian Gerard D’Mello, it could have been worse. In the final five minutes, Sporting Goa substitute Joe Pereira collapsed in the box after falling victim to a reckless challenge. Boima stepped up to convert the penalty and seal the three points for the Flaming Oranje.

18.11.2014: Sporting Clube de Goa 1-3 VASCO SC
VAS : Naveen Mendes, Chinedu Emmanuel Ejidgu 2
SCG : Boima Karpeh.

Chinedu Emmanuel Ejidgu netted a brace as Vasco Sports Club edged past Sporting Clube de Goa 3-1 in Gfa's Goa Pro League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Tuesday. Vasco led 1-0 at the breather. Sporting Goa dominated the opening exchanges, but could not penetrate in the final third of the field.

Naveen Mendes opened the scoring for Vasco on the half hour mark when he capitalised on a mistake in the Sporting Goa defence to drive the ball home.

Changing over, Vasco managed to double their lead through a corner when Chinedu poked the ball in with his head. A resilient Sporting Goa went all out on the attack and fought their way back into contention when the Vasco custodian failed to deal with a cross at the back post, which allowed Boima to smash the ball home and pull a goal back for the Flaming Oranje.

Three minutes into injury time, as Sporting Goa pushed men forward in search of the equalizer they got caught on the break as Chinedu struck again for Vasco.

15.11.2014: Sporting Clube de Goa 0-0 Churchill Brothers

Sporting Clube de Goa was held to a goalless draw by Churchill Brothers Sports Club in Gfa's Goa Pro League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Saturday. Sporting Goa handed new signing Glenton Wolfe a debut at the heart of the defence. Glenton along with Brother Anthony Wolfe played for Churchill last season and both put up a stellar performance against their former employees.

Churchill created chances to score, but for the most part defended tightly by putting large numbers of bodies behind the ball. Sporting Goa were severely hindered early on when Joyner Lourenco dislocated his shoulder, but managed to soldier on after receiving treatment on the sidelines.

Churchill had the best chance of the first half, when Sunday Nwadialu stinging drive flew just past the post. After resumption, Sporting Goa came out all guns blazing with Victorino Fernandes, Anthony Wolfe and Mauvin Borges coming close to scoring, only to be stopped by the robust defending of Churchill.

In the closing stages, Sporting Goa had the chance to steal victory when Royston D’Souza rolled the ball goal across the danger area, but Cajetan Fernandes’ shot flew over the bar.
