I-League Round 13: Chhetri, Rooney On Target As BFC Put On Second Half Show..

06.12.2013 : KFC. | www.kolkatafootball.com HOME PAGE

06.12.2013 : CHURCHILL BROTHERS   1-3   BENGALURU FC (GOA - FT.)-
Churchill Brothers 1 (Balwant 72')
Bengaluru FC 3 (Rooney 50', Chhetri 64',74')
CRB : Arindam, Denzil, Ravanan, Raju Y, Naser, Yasser, Micky, Lenny, Shabana, Saran, Alesh.
BEN : Pawan, Curtis, John, Thoi, Rino, Beikhokhei, Siam, Lalrozama, Jonney, Rooney, Sunil... REFEREE: C.R.Shrikrishna

BFC PRESS RELEASE : Sunil Chhetri seems to be going through more than just a purple patch as the skipper struck a brace to steer Bengaluru FC to a 1-3 win over Churchill Brothers at the Duler Stadium, in Goa, on Friday. The pair came after Sean Rooney marked his return to the team with a peach of a header as Ashley Westwood's army opened a five-point gap at the top of the table.

Westwood made the one change from the win over Shillong Lajong last week when he started with Rooney instead of Robin Singh as the teams put on a lacklustre first half show. Bengaluru weren't off the blocks as they usually are and found it difficult to switch gears while Churchill didn't do much either. The one chance Churchill had was when Thangjam Singh picked out Yasser Shahen who turned Curtis Osano only to shoot wide.

Clearly frustrated by the inactivity, Westwood pulled off Beikhokhei Beingaichho and threw in Darren Caldeira just before a half time. The switch would pay dividends in the second half as Caldeira had a hand in two goals. A long punt by Curtis Osano found Chhetri who played it to Caldeira. The midfielder picked out Lalrozama Fanai on the left and the defender's inch-perfect cross was headed home very calmly by Rooney to make it 1-0 in the 50th minute.

The goal gave the Bengaluru FC attack the impetus it lacked and Chhetri tapped home a volley in the 64th when John Johnson picked out Thoi Singh with a lovely long ball only for the latter to cross in for the lurking striker while the Churchill defence napped.

Ten minutes later, it would be Bengaluru's chance to be caught napping as substitute Balwant Singh was allowed to smash home from on top of the box. Conceding soon after scoring has been the bane of this Bengaluru FC team but Chhetri needed just two minutes to make sure it didn't come to haunt the Blues.

Receiving a ball on the left, Caldeira spotted a Chhetri run and calmly bisected the Churchill defence with a through ball that the striker calmly tucked home. Westwood pulled Rooney off for Robin and the substitute could have a brace himself but for lack of accuracy in front of goal.

Churchill didn't look like building on the goal they got back and Chhetri's fourth goal in two games further punctured any thoughts of an inspired revival. Bengaluru FC now have 24 points from 12 games while Churchill are still bottom-placed with seven points from 11 games.

I-League Round 13: Shillong Lajong beat Salgaocar at home..

06.12.2013 : KFC. | www.kolkatafootball.com HOME PAGE

06.12.2013 : SHILLONG LAJONG  2-1   SALGAOCAR SC (SLNG - FT)
SLFC : Tuboi 21', Subhash 37'
SAL : Duffy MOM : Subhash Singh (SLFC)
SAL : Karanjit, Costa, Chika, Augustine, Matthew, Karma T, Clifton, Rocus, Fulganco, Gilbert, Duffy.
SLFC : L Ralte, Passah, Jibon, Robin, Lalchhuanmawia, Taiuske, Milan, Haokip, Subash, Tuboi, Redeem.

Shillong Lajong FC pulled off a stunning display extending their unbeaten run at home to six games beating Salgaocar FC with a triumphant scoreline of two goals to one at the J.N.Stadium, Shillong on Friday.

Both teams started the match with possession football and not really creating any chances up front. Shillong Lajong FC in particular were given a huge setback as three of their key players were not available for the match. Uilliams who carried a knock in the game against Bengaluru FC did not start. His strike partner Cornell Glen and Lajong team captain Minchol Son were also ruled out for this match with ankle injuries.

The injuries though did not affect the team's performance as Lajong drew first blood in the 22nd minute through a brilliant left footed strike from Seikhohao Tuboi. A beautiful pass from the wing found Tuboi on the edge of the box. Tuboi took his first touch exquisitely which then set up his shot that went past Salgaocar’s custodian Karanjit Singh into the side netting.

The lead gave The Reds a much needed push as they nearly found their second in the next minute as Lajong's header was headed off the line. The Reds were on the front foot again and found their second goal in the 38th minute. Subash Singh dribbled through the Salgaocar defense and Karanjit Singh could not do anything to stop Subash's shot. The Reds went into the break with a two goal cushion and much to think for Salgaocar manager Derrick Pereira. The second half started in similar fashion as the first with both teams not creating any clear cut chances.

The away side then gave Lajong a slight headache when they found their first goal in the 52nd minute. The goal came out of nowhere as Darryl Duffy towered over Lajong keeper Lalthuammawia Ralte and headed the ball into the net. The goal though didn't prove to be much of a catalyst as Salgaocar still struggled to find their pace. The Reds were living dangerously towards the end as Salgaocar kept pushing for the equaliser but Pereira's men were unsuccessful as The Reds finished the game on a winning note.

With this win Shillong Lajong FC have 17 points from 12 games and are currently placed in fifth position in the I-League table while Salgaocar FC slipped to 4th place with 18 points from 12 games.
