PRESS RELEASE - BFC : Bharat FC look to continue run of good form against Shillong Lajong FC

Fresh from two big wins at home, Bharat FC will look to continue the momentum as they take on Shillong Lajong FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong, on Sunday afternoon. The Hero I-League round 10 (rescheduled) fixture will kick-off at 4.30 pm tomorrow.

The Lions have strung together a good run of results, downing table-toppers Mohun Bagan AC at home before clinching the Pune derby against Pune FC through a 90th minute penalty. Currently occupying sixth position on the table with 18 points from 16 games, Bharat FC will look to further consolidate their position with a positive result against Lajong. On the other hand, the hosts, Shillong Lajong FC, are also in good nick as they first downed Dempo SC 3-0 at home before holding Bengaluru FC to a 1-1 draw last weekend. The hosts are in eighth place with 16 points from 17 matches.

Bharat FC head coach, Stuart Watkiss, said that he expected his team to further raise their game, utilizing the boost in confidence that the two back-to-back victories that they had secured. “Last week, the lads showed immense character to pull out victories against two very strong teams. The display that the team put on against Mohun Bagan AC and Pune FC have given everyone a lot of heart. We played good attacking football, regularly put our opponents under pressure and created some great chances. If we continue to do that, I am sure we can come away with a positive result against Shillong Lajong FC,” he said.

The Lions have a full-strength squad to choose from and the return of New Zealand international striker, Kris Bright, back to full fitness will add more attacking firepower to the team. Bright played the last 15 minutes of the Pune derby, scoring the all-important goal. “All of our players were exceptional in the last two matches. Kris (Bright) has also recovered from his hamstring issue and we are confident of putting out our best team on the pitch on Sunday,” he said.

The Bharat FC head coach believed that his team would be required to be ‘switched-on’ for the entirety of the 90 minutes against a well-drilled and disciplined Shillong Lajong FC outfit. “Lajong are a good team with some very talented players. They have good foreign players and the side has the ability to hurt any team on a given day. They have a very intelligent coach and we will need to be aware tactically and physically against them,” he said. In their last meeting in the mid-April, Bharat FC and Shillong Lajong FC split points, playing out an entertaining 1-1 draw. A Surajit Bose header had given Bharat FC the lead before Uilliams Souza cancelled out the advantage with a strike, five minutes from time.

Shillong Lajong FC’s head coach, Thangboi Singto, expected his side to put up a strong fight which would allow Lajong to fortify their position in the Hero I-League. “Bharat FC are a very organized team. They have had two good results and their confidence will be high coming into this game. We have also managed to play some attractive football and we have managed to get some good results in the last two weeks. It will be an entertaining and tight match. We have played Bharat FC earlier in the season and there are a few things we are working on. Both sides will go hard at each other and my players are completely motivated to give it their best shot,” he said.
