Salgaocar FC got the better of the home side Aizawl FC to gather all 3 points in the Hero I-League Round 16 fixture held at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl. Darryl Duffy’s low free-kick sent the Greens to the 5th spot on the table

The 1st half began with the home side on the offense as Albert Zohmingmawia & Yuta Kinowaki combined well but the threat was dealt with by Eder Fernandes & Leny Pereira stood tall for the Greens defence. Salgaocar were not to be outdone as they did well to clear the immediate threats & move swiftly on the counter.

This posed a threat to the Aizawl defence in the 4th minute as Duffy sent a ball for Jackichand Singh which the midfielder found difficult to get his footing on & lost the opportunity. Jackichand had another close call when he took a free-kick from just outside the box but his shot despite beating the wall went inches wide of the post.

The home side were consistent in mounting the pressure but were denied a shot on target by the Goan outfit’s defence. As the game crossed the half-hour mark Duffy took the match winning free-kick from about 20 yards as he sent a low grounded shot into the back of the net to beat Aizawl FC custodian Lalawmpuia. The first half ended with the Greens in the lead of 0-1.

The second half saw the Reds kick things into high gear after a few attempts from the Salgaocar side. Hero of the Match Karanjit Singh was kept busy as he had to block quite a few attempts from Albert & Joel Sunday. The latter came close to scoring the equaliser as on one occasion his header from a corner went sailing just above the post & on another occasion where he beat the Greens defence but his shot just hit the woodwork & was sent out for a goal-kick.

Despite a barrage of attacks from the home side the Greens walked away with the victory & have become the 3rd team to do so. With this Salgaocar have moved out of the bottom spot & now sit with 16 points on the 5th spot.
