Salgaocar FC ended their Hero I-League campaign with 0-3 loss to State rivals Sporting Clube De Goa at Tilak Maidan, Vasco on Saturday. Pratesh Shirodkar (6'), Sumeet Passi (30') and Victorino Fernandes (83') got on the score sheet for Sporting. The match stayed at 0 - 2 in favour of Sporting at the Half-time.
Sporitng Gaffer Mateus Cost made 2 changes to the side which held East Bengal to a goalless draw at Kolkata, Odafa Okolie and Mehrajuddin Wadoo made way for the in-form Sumeet Passi and Joseph Clement. Sporting started the match high on confidence displaying good attacking football right from the kick-off. The Flaming Oranje got their first look at the goal in the 5th minute when Nicholas Fernandes and Mahmoud Amnah combined well to break down the Salgaocar FC defense but the former missed the nets from a close range winning a corner.
Rowllin Borges send a perfect ball from the corner into a flooded SFC box, Karanjit Singh leaped high enough to punch the ball out but only to find Sporting's mid-field maestro Pratesh Shirodkar who struck neatly from about 25 yards off to score a screamer. The next best chance of the match came in the 23rd minute when Rowllin took on 3 defenders to come head on with the SFC custodian but failed to keep the ball low. Sporting's in-form striker Sumeet Passi who was causing some trouble for the green's defense struck in the 30th minute off a Nicholas cross. The latter latched on to Mahmoud Al Amnah's ball taking on 2 defenders to set Passi up with a brilliant cross making it 0 - 2 in favour of Sporting. The scoreline stayed at 0 - 2 in the half-time.
Crossing over Sporting maintained pressure on a depleting greens side. Santosh Kayshap's last ditch attempt to lift the moral of his players with introduction of Martin Scott too dint seem to be working. In the 57th minute Sporting almost made it 3 when skipper Mahmoud rounded off Karanjit Singh to send in a powerful right footed shot only to see a brilliant save by the SFC defender Augustin Fernandes. Salgaocar FC had their best chance of the match in the 66th minute when Keenan Almeida got a clean header but missed the nets form a hand shaking distance.
In the 81st minute Mateus Costa introduced his super sub Victorino Fernandes for a tiring Sumeet Passi. The move instantly paid of as Victorino's first touch landed straight into the nets making it 0 - 3 for Sporting in the 83rd minute. Salgaocar FC failed to make any difference in the last few minutes as Santosh Kayshap and company seemed to run out of ideas towards the end. With this win Sporting stay at 4th position with 22 points while Salgaocar FC will wait for tomorrows results to determine their position on the table.
A jubilant Sporting gaffer Mateus Costa said after the match "This is a very important victory, we have not only consolidated the 4th position but also made sure that we go into the Fed cup high on confidence. This win has surely been a major positive in the dressing room." He further added "I am very happy with the way our boys have played today, finally we shown what Sporting can really do."

PREVIEW : SAL PRESS RELEASE ; The Tilak Maidan in Vasco is all set for the high-octane Goan Derby when Salgaocar FC will take on their state rivals Sporting Clube de Goa on Saturday. In the previous encounter the Greens were not able to fight to keep the league as interesting as everyone would have hoped for but have had a mighty impressive season thus far.
Salgaocar FC now out of the jaws of relegation sits on the 6th spot as they turned their tide around from their initial dismal performance. Having lost 4 of their opening matches the Greens fought their way out of the bottom spot to pulling off mighty wins over Kolkata giants East Bengal and DSK Shivajians the home side now have a chance to finish 4th as they battle their State rivals. The match will kick off at 07:05 PM with live telecast on Ten 1.
In the 1st leg of this encounter at the Fatorda Stadium the Flaming Oranje were able to hold a resurgent Salgaocar side to a 1 – 1 draw. However now as the top three honours of the league are out of reach for either side this has become a match to claim bragging rights over Goan dominance & a chance to finish 4th.
The Greens Gaffer Santosh Kashyap said “We come here after playing two tough matches; we did well in Aizawl but couldn’t execute our plan in Bengaluru. This is a different game; we play at home so that’s definitely an advantage also the team looks to be in a good shape. Being our last match we want to achieve a respectable position in the table, so yes a win here can take us to the 4th spot.” Kashyap also mentioned the fact about players having to adjust with as many as 3 to 4 coaches within one season which makes it very difficult for many players to cope up. The coach mentioned that they would not have their star defender Eder Monteiro, who was stretchered out in the previous game along with Saran Singh who received 2 yellows in the same match.
Speaking to the media Sporting Head Coach Mateus Costa said “We always want to finish as high as possible on the table, now that the 3rd spot is out of reach we would like to maintain our position at 4th.” Costa further added “The derbies are always high pressure games; it’s not just the 4th position which is at stake here. With the Federation Cup looming around we would definitely want to win tomorrow. This can be a huge moral boost for the players ahead of the Fed Cup and also it would mean we play the second leg at home which is a huge advantage.” Sporting would in all probability lack the services of their talisman striker Odafa Okolie while Mehrajuddin Wadoo will also miss tomorrow’s fixture courtesy the red card he picked up in the previous match.
Both the coaches have made an appeal to the fans to turn out in large numbers to support their favourite colour as the Greens go head-to-head with the Oranje. With either side having an eye on the fourth spot, the Goan Football lovers are in for mouth-watering affair in the port town city of Vasco.
