31.12.2009 ::Debashis Majumder ::The last East Bengal-Mohun Bagan derby of 2009 ended with 2-0 scoreline in favour of East Bengal. With this Fed Cup semi final win over their archrival East Bengal entered into the final where they will face Shillong Lajong who confirmed their place in the final after beating Churchill Brothers in the first semi final yesterday.
As in their last I-League encounter on 25th October, 2009 Mohun Bagan registered a 5-3 win over East Bengal the Red and Gold was eager to return the complement to their arch rivals and from the kick of today’s match this determination was present in the team East Bengal. Very early in the first half when a fabulous free kick of Sanju Pradhan was saved by Mohun Bagan keeper Sangram Mukherjee then a glance of the aggressive character of East Bengal’s game plan has been expressed. But it was Mohun Bagan who showed early dominance in the match and early in the first half Mohun Bagan got a golden opportunity to go ahead in the match as because of an unconvincing brought down of Isfaq within the penalty box by the East Bengal defenders caused a penalty to Mohun Bagan but Bagan lost the advantage as the experienced striker like Bareto wasted the opportunity by kicking the penalty outside of goal. It proved the most crucial turning point of the match and from this time East Bengal started to get back in the match.
In the second half the match began with 0-0 scoreline but soon in the 54th minute Yakubu opened the scoreline with a fine goal by capitalizing a corner. After this goal East Bengal took the hold of the match. East Bengal was the dominant team in the second half. Mohun Bagan forwards like Bareto and Chidi could not make much harm to the East Bengal goal due to the fantastic performance delivered by Okpara in the defence. In Mohun Bagan side only Isfaq Ahmed tried hard to get the equalizer but towards the end of the match Mehtab Hussain scored the second and final goal for East Bengal and with it he also confirmed East Bengal’s place in the final of this edition of the Federation Cup.
In final East Bengal will face Shillong Lajong who qualified to the final for the first time. The advantage of the final definitely goes to Lajong as they have nothing to loss. On the other hand East Bengal will play for their pride, honour and reputation. Moreover Lajong coach Stanley Rosario was the coach of East Bengal in the last season so he was well aware about the club and in Guwahati Lajong will get innumerable support during the final. Whereas in favour of East Bengal we can say that earlier in an I-League encounter in Kolkata East Bengal beat Lajong with 3-0 scoreline in this year. So East Bengal must have prepare for a tough challenge in final from Shillong Lajong for the Federation Cup title.
East Bengal:Abhra Mondal, Uga Okpara, Nirmal Chetri, Rahim Nabi,

30.12.2009: Debashis Majumder :A dream run is going on for Shillong Lajong in the Fed Cup as they reached to the final of the tournament in their very first appearance. With a full house support in Guwahati the team of Stanley Rosario beat mighty Churchill Brothers with 1-0 scoreline and secured their place in the final.
With the kick of the young brigade of Lajong started to play with maximum concentration and determination. With perfect game plan Lajong was eager to take early lead. In fact in the 20th minute Tuboi made a good attempt but on that occasion Churchill keeper Latit Thapa successfully protected the goal. But with the rising pressure of Lajong towards Churchill goal a golden opportunity came in the 29th minute when Giblee delivered a fantastic high cross to Tuboi and Tuboi scored a fantastic goal by beating Naoba and Rowilson in a fine turn. After conceding the goal Churchill came out with their full strength in search of an equalizer and as soon as in the 35th minute Odafe got an golden opportunity to return the goal back when he was brought down by the Lajong defenders with in the penalty box and the referee awarded a deserved penalty to Churchill. Odafe himself took the spot kick but experienced Lajong keeper Gumphe Rime not just only saved the penalty but also the day for Lajong. In spite of their repeated attack Churchill could not open the goal of Lajong in the first half.
In second half with couple of substitutions Churchill started to attack more vigorously but their star striker Odafe remained more or less quite as he was kept under tight marking by the Lajong defenders. While Ogba Kalu also was pretty much out coloured today. On the other hand Lajong defence played with such confidence and determination that the Churchill players failed to cause any harm to the Shillong Lajong. Despite that towards the end of the match Churchill got another fabulous opportunity to level the score but again Odafe wasted the chance. As with the final whistle Lajong won the match with 1-0 scoreline and took them into the final of this edition of the Fed Cup.
The final opponent of Lajong will be determined by tomorrow’s big semi final between two Kolkata Giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. According to the record in the first Federation Cup in 1977 ITI (Indian Telephone Industries) and in 1978 joint winner East Bengal only won the Federation Cup in their very first appearance in the tournament. Now the record is waiting in front of Lajong but it is sure that whoever (either Mohun Bagan or East Bengal) face Lajong in the final will definitely face tough challenge in the final encounter.
30.12.2009 :: Another big match is coming up on 31st December, 2009
as the second semi-final of Federation Cup. Again the Kolkata Giants East-Bengal
and Mohun Bagan will face each other in a crucial encounter.
Still now in this season East Bengal could not make justice with the expectations. In Durand Cup and IFA Shield this year East Bengal delivered disappointing performance. Above all in an I-League encounter on 25th October, 2009 East Bengal for the first time ever received 5 goals from Mohun Bagan. So the team is facing tough time in this season. But the name of the team is East Bengal and this name matters. East Bengal has the ability to overcome all the hurdles to re establish themselves as the champions and the Fed Cup brought such an opportunity for the team.
Under the new coach Phillip de Rider who East Bengal already started to fight back. In the Fed Cup in round robin league the Red and Gold brigade overcome all the hurdles with unbeaten status as the team registered wins against JCT and Salgaokar and made a draw against Viva Kerala. More important in the last round robin league match against JCT Bhaichung Bhutia scored the winning goal for his team. This surely indicates a threat to the Maroon and Greens.
East Bengal team is now in well balanced condition. In defence Okpara playing with great efficiency while in mid field East Bengal has the talent like Mehtab Hussain. Whereas in upfront the deadly combination of Yakubu, Hammond and Bhaichung can create panic to the defence of any I-League team. Moreover East Bengal also has the utility footballer like Rahim Nabi and master of dead ball situation Alvito D’ Cunha who can change the course of the game any time.
East Bengal is the 5 time champions and 7 time runners up of the Federation Cup. From the Fed Cup of 2007 onwards East Bengal and Mohun Bagan facing each other in the semi final. In 2007 East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan with 3-2 scoreline and they became the champions by defeating Mahindra United in final. In 2008 in the Fed Cup semi final Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal in penalty shootout scoreline and by defeating Dempo in the final the mariners became the champions of the Fed Cup, 2009.
So from this statistics the East Bengal fans can take this crucial semifinal encounter as the semi decider of the championship. East Bengal is ready and well prepared to take all the challenges from Mohun Bagan and the Red and Gold brigade is also ready with all the positive answers. So the winning of the Federation Cup by East Bengal will be the best New Year gift from the team to its supporters.
30.12.2009 :: It’s a Bengali nostalgia. It is the most awaited clash in Indian football, which divides the whole of Bengal into two almost equal halves. Since 1925, it has been the topic of heated discussion in every Bengali household, locality and “adda”s. It’s the 2nd fiercest derby in the history of world football after the “Milan” derby. When Mohun Bagan and East Bengal take the field in the flood lit Nehru stadium in Assam on New Year’s Eve, the whole of Bengal will wait with bated breath for the result.
As soon as the curtains came down on east Bengal’s last match in Silchar, it was official. The arch rivals will battle it out for the third consecutive time in the last three years for a place in the finals of India’s most prestigious tournament, the Federation Cup. And if the last two encounters are anything to go by, the audiences are in for a feast of football.
Both teams come into the match with contrasting backdrops. Mohun Bagan are one of the form teams this year. They are the runners of both the IFA shield and the Durand Cup and are just three points behind a possible top spot in the ONGC I-league. They are way ahead in the CFL with maximum points from 6 games. Above all, they are riding the euphoria of the “5 goal payback” of 1975 in the recently concluded derby. New signing Edeh Chiddi has been in red hot form and so has been new Asian signing suoeka ryuji. They have won 9 of their last 10 games drawing only one and their enigmatic striker Jose Ramirez Barreto has finally shrugged of his long injury stint and is looking sharp as ever. On the whole, they are looking like a well oiled machine at this moment.
East Bengal on the other hand has had a disastrous start to the season. Group stage elimination from both IFA shield and Durand led to the resignation of their mercurial coach Mr. Subhash Bhowmik and all their foreign recruits were shown the door. They were also handed a drubbing in their first derby clash against their arch rivals where they were convincingly beaten 5-3. Since then though, they started to turn around. New foreign recruit Okpara brought in the much needed solidity in defense and the Nigerian Abel Hammond along with wily old fox Yusuf Yakubu has brought in the potency in attack. They have also had a decent run lately and their enigmatic striker Baichung Bhutia in on his way back to full match fitness. But they still have a long list of injuries and are slowly but surely trying to find their way under their new Belgian coach, Phillip Di Rider.
But when it comes to this famous clash, the form book goes out of the window. It’s always is a 50-50 affair. It’s a match where tempers run high; emotions are displayed like never before. Crunching tackles, flurry of cards, goalmouth skirmish, argument with referees, everything is present. The ground takes the shape of a battle field, where the opponents are vouching for each other’s blood. It’s like two sets of blood hounds going for each other’s throat.
The battle cries have already started with Karim Bencharifa stating that he has no time to think about East Bengal’s combinations and Baichung stating that 5 goals will not happen every time. So it’s a request to all the fans of both the teams to sit back and enjoy. It is surely going to be a humdinger of a contest. Just can’t wait for the match to start. Wishing both the team’s best of luck.

28.12.2009 :: Pushpargha Chatterjee, CANADA ::“Easy” is a relative term. Although grammatically “easier” should be the word but I think Argentina have an easy
group considering their recent performances on their way to qualification. Well honestly, nothing comes easy but
may be, in this case scenario, we can use the word for Argentina because they have managed to avoid teams like
France, Portugal, USA, Denmark and Ivory Coast. Argentina is a team that should not be concerned about
qualification but they should be more concerned about reaching the semis and finals in World Cups. Sadly
however, such is the state of the team that the draw for them will give Diego and co a sigh of relief. Yes, they
are still favorites to go through to the next round but will the likes of South Korea, Nigeria and Greece make
it easy for them. No way!
Messi has been named the best player in planet but for Argentina he remains a question mark. There is a difference between Club football and International football. Often stars have literally struggled to cope up with the pressure of playing for their nations and there have often been buzzes of their loyalties, dedication, and commitment while questions have been raised about money and professionalism being a part of the players’ success and failure for club and country respectively. Anyways, I don’t think it has been the case with Messi. He is a young lad who has achieved a lot at 22 and still has a long way to go. There already is immense pressure on him to deliver for club and country and everytime he achieves something, the pressure and expectancy increases so it’ll not be surprising if he falters at this stage. The fact that he won the FIFA Footballer of the year award only doubles the pressure and expectations. All the eyes around the footballing world now will be on him hoping he will pull out a piece of magic and win the cup single-handedly which is not fair but that is football and life.
The reason for Argentina’s worries has been nothing more than poor team chemistry. The players don’t know where to play, how to play, what to do, which way to go, and I think if anyone is to be blamed at all then it has to be Diego. His management system has been put into question by not only the media but also footballing experts and it doesn’t look good for Argentina. Simply put, Messi and others have been misused. But in the end of it all, Argentina is Argentina and Maradona is Maradona. How often have we seen that the team that struggle to qualify achieve glory in the end. Although Argentina and Diego can’t thrive on this but they can still start fresh and be positive about it.
Argentina have some fantastic players in the form of Tevez, Messi, Kun Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria and Pablo Aimar but they will still miss Riquelme and his playmaking abilities if he is not available for the cup which looks very likely. Greece looks like the team to give Argentina the biggest problem. Their compact and defensive style of play will make the Argentines work doubly harder with some rash challenges coming in and some physical play. Greece’s closing down style of play will make it very difficult for the Messis and Agueros to find space to run which has been their biggest strength with low centre of gravity as they will be cramped and will be involved in a cagy fight and Argentina historically have struggled in such cagy fights.
Once you close down spaces to players like Messi, Aguero and Tevez, half the game is won as these players cannot fight for the ball physically with the tall and strong Greeks with no place to run. One on one duels will be tough to fight in as in modern day football, there is very little time to breath, forget make a move. Although Messi is special and may be he can do something about it. The physical approach will be hard to deal with whereas long ball play, which is often sought as a remedy for tackling the closing down approach might not suit well for the Albicelestes for the same reason that most of their players are short with an average height of 178 cms compared to 187cms to that of the Greeks and therefore a playmaker of Riquelme’s calibre would be sorely missed who could orchestrate the game from the midfield without much running to do and could pass and skillfully play around with the ball in very short and tight spaces with some beautiful tricks.
Moreover, they will also have to be careful at the back with the lingering threat of Charisteas, Gekas, Samaras and Salpigidis in the penalty area. Greece do have some very good players in their side with teenage sensation Soitiris Ninis being the one to watch out for. His devastating runs with pace on the right hand side and clever cut-ins will be troublesome for any side. Karagounis will be in charge of all the playmaking duties whereas Kyrgiakos, Seitaridis and Torosidis will be rock solid at the back. Nigeria will fancy their chances as the third team and might sneak through with the homely atmosphere of Africa all around. They have good players as Aiyegbeni Yakubu, Obafemi Martins and Obinna upfront and Joseph Yobo and Shittu in defence. Odemwingie will be a special player to watch out for with sudden burst of pace and tricks alongside the evergreen and reliable Kanu whereas John Mikel Obi will be the midfield orchestrator. The only problem that Nigeria currently are facing is having an able coach to guide them to the success path as Shaibo Amodu the current coach has not been very impressive.
South Korea is the weakest team in the group. This is a world cup played in Africa and not Korea and 2002 is long gone when they finished fourth. South Korea are no longer the same side they used to be and history will definitely not repeat itself. There will be not dubious decisions by referees for god’s sake and we won’t have any upsets from Korea this time. They have not performed very well in Qualifiers and many a times have looked dismal and I don’t see that changing. Park Ji Sung will be the key player but other than him, the side doesn’t possess any form of inspiration.
It will be a tough group phase for them and they are very likely to go home with no points. The key matches in the group would obviously be between Argentina and Nigeria and also Argentina and Greece. Meanwhile Greece vs Nigeria would probably determine the second team to go through alongside Argentina. My prediction from this group might come as a surprise to many as I would say Nigeria finishes top with the home like atmosphere all around, drawing Argentina and winning the other games with 7 points and Argentina sneaking through in second with a draw against Greece and the super eagles and beating South Korea with 5 points.

27.12.2009 ::Debashis Majumder(Kolkata) And Babu Singh (Silchor) ::
Football lovers in India and abroad will get to witness a Derby as they bid goodbye to 2009, a year that has gone reasonably well for Indian Football. In the 31st Hero Honda Federation Cup, K.East Bengal will take on Defending Champions M.Mohun Bagan on 31st December in a Semi Final match. The other Semi final would be between Churchill Brothers and qualifier of Group D, which has been thrown wide open.
The Federation Cup Semi final Derby clash between the Kolkata Giants would actually be a repeat of the 2007 and 2008 editions. In 2007 at Ludhiana, KEB had defeated MMB by 3-2 while MMB had extracted revenge the next year at Kolkata in a penalty shoot out. Incidentally the winner of the Semi Final had also won the Federation Cup and gone on to play in the coveted AFC Cup.
In today’s much awaited match, KEB needed a win over JCT Mills to be absolutely sure of a semi final berth. However their ambitions received a rude jolt right in the 26th minute when Harmanjot Singh Khabra received a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Penn and received marching orders. Down to ten men, KEB struggled hard to keep the JCT marksmen at bay. Custodian Abhra Mondal came up with great saves on a number of occasions. The KEB defence was also alert with Nirmal Chetri and Okpara making timely clearances to deny the JCT strikers, Penn and Henry. The 25,000 spectators who made it a full house at Silchar were vociferously supporting KEB.
KEB Belgian Coach De Ridder made two substitutions in the second half. In an attempt to go for goals inspite of being down to 10 men, he brought in Budhiram Tudu in place of Subhas Singh in the 62nd minute and Bhaichung Bhutia in place of Alvito D’Cunha in the 72nd minute. His second replacement paid him rich dividends as Bhaichung scored in the 80th minute. Latching on to a Yakubu pass, the mercurial striker scored with a measured grounder that found the net past the outstretched hands of JCT keeper Karanjit, who otherwise had a good day in office today. This was Bhaichung’s first goal for the Red & Gold Brigade in this season and it could not have come at a better time! The last ten minutes found the entire KEB team running to protect their citadel and as the clock ticked JCT forwards ran out of ideas and conceded defeat. Motivation was low for the Mill men because their chances of qualification was as good as none even if they had won this match.
Both KEB and MMB have a few players with yellow cards but yellow cards earned in the Quarter final stage will not be carried over to the Semi Final round. However Red cards will be carried over so KEB will miss Harmanjot Khabra. Both camps will be on a cautious note because lot is at stake in this tournament. In case Churchill Brothers moves to the Final, the other Finalist (winner of the Derby) will automatically get to play in the AFC Cup 2010 even if it fails to win the Fed Cup since Churchill Brothers (winners of last year’s I-League) will play in the AFC Champions’ League Play Off in 2010.
MMB supporters will be banking on the fine form and confidence of their Team and their great record in the Federation Cup to win the Derby while KEB bolstered by this morale boosting victory will be looking to end an otherwise dismal year on a high note. Only Time will tell which Team Lady Luck will favour on New Year’s Eve at Guwahati.

27.12.2009 ::Debashis Majumder ::Shillong Lajong will play against Churchill Brothers in the first semifinal of the Federation Cup on 30th December, 2009. Stanley Rosario’s team had a dream run in this edition of the Fed Cup as they reached to the semi final in the year of their first appearance in the championship and again by beating the team like Dempo S.C.
Today in the vital Group D encounter Lajong made 1-1 draw against Pune F.C. as Anil Gurung scored for Lajong and Douhou for Pune F.C. Later in another Group D encounter Dempo registered 2-0 victory over Air-India and with this result Lajong confirmed their place in the semi final against the mighty Churchill Brothers.
On the other hand in a Group A match Viva Kerala made 1-1 draw with Salgaokar but this result had no further value as East Bengal had already qualified for Semi-final from this group and on the last day of this year in the second Fed Cup semi final East Bengal will take up their arch rival Mohun Bagan.
26.12.2009 ::Debashis Majumder(Kolkata) And Babu Singh (Silchor) ::
Mohun Bagan reached to the semi-final of this edition of the Federation Cup. Today in the most crucial Group-B encounter in Guwahati the boys of Karim Bencharifa registered a 2-0 victory over David Booth’s Mahindra United to confirm their place in the semis.
Earlier before the kick-off Mahindra had certain advantage as they won both the previous games. 25.12.2009 ::Debashis Majumder ::The year 2009 is proved a very eventful year for Indian football. Nehru Cup and SAFF Cup triumphs along with vital domestic and international events in Indian football made the year 2009 very much significant.
The highlight of Indian football in 2009 was definitely the retaining of the Nehru Cup by beating the 2007 Runners-up Syria in a breathtaking penalty shoot-out (tie-breaker) in New Delhi in the final encounter of the championship.
Except that this year Indian football team also qualified for the AFC Asian Cup, 2011. Though Bob Houghton’s boys lost to Syria and Lebanon in the round robin league of the AFC Challengers Cup but the team re-organised themselves and finally came out as the Champions of the AFC Challengers Cup and also qualified for the AFC Asian Cup, 2011.
During the AFC Challengers Cup Indian Skipper Bhaichung Bhutia played his 100 international match for his nation. He became the first Indian and 37th Asian as well as 152nd International player to play the 100 matches for the national team.
Towards the end of the year India U-23 football team won the SAFF Cup in Bangladesh by beating the previous edition champion Maldives in a crucial tie-breaker.
The starting year 2009 became special for the Indian football as the
Prince of the game and the living legend Diego Armando Maradona came to India
just few weeks ago. He visited the Football Capital of India - Kolkata and observed the football craze of the city.
Besides these achievements and glories the year 2009 also brought certain disappointments for the Indian football. First of all Indian Women team was delisted from FIFA Ranking in July after failing to play a single international match for 18 months. This event caused severe criticism of the AIFF from the former players.

Secondly, an ambitious football academy to be set in Goa in collaboration with the telecom giant Bharti Airtel, which had earmarked Rs. 100 Crore for the proposed state of the art centre was, abandoned after a land dispute.
Thirdly, in 2009 except the Nehru Cup the Indian team played just one international friendly against Hong Kong and they lost the match with 1-2 scoreline.
The AIFF also dropped its ambitious ‘Goal 2011’ project due to lack of financial resources as well as some clubs were also against of it.
Dempo S.C. also missed the chance to play in the prestigious AFC Champions League after their 0-3 loss against Al-Sharjah of U.A.E.
The year proved as a heart breaking for Sunil Chhetri as his dream of playing in English League came to an end due to his rejection by the Coventry City and then failed to get the work permit to play in United Kingdom after being selected by the Queen Park Rangers.
Whereas in domestic level in 2009 Churchill Brothers emerged as the best team as
they won both the titles of I-League and Durand Cup in 2009. Churchill also won
the Prestigious IFA Shield title in 2009. Churchill’s Star striker Odafe Okolie rose
as the most effective foreign player in 2009.
But the most significant event in
domestic football in this year was the controversy between Mohun Bagan and
Bhaichung Bhutia. The AIFF appointed an arbitrator to end this controversy and
finally Bhaichung signed for East Bengal.
The year 2009 also experienced a historical event in domestic football. In 25th October in the running I-League Mohun Bagan registered 5-3 victory over their arch rival East Bengal. Before this day Mohun Bagan never score 5 goals against East Bengal. Whereas 34 years earlier in 1975 in a IFA Shield match East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan with 5-0 scoreline. History repeated itself but this time the colour changed. Not only had a five goal victory of Mohun Bagan but in this match Chidi scored 4 goals for Mohun Bagan which had never happened before in a Mohun Bagan-East Bengal I-League derby.
This is a summary of the eventful 2009 in Indian football. In 2010 Indian football will look forward with more significant events as the new year will definitely come with new lights and hopes for the Indian football.

Today in a crucial Fed Cup Group -B encounter in Guwahati Chirag United hold Mohun Bagan with a goalless draw. But this draw could not help Chirag as they were out of the tournament. Whereas for Mohun Bagan the situation became tougher and they have to beat Mahindra United in their last group match to reach the semis.
Today both the teams started with attacking mentality but the players of both the teams missed number of easy chances in the first half. In the 33rd minute of the first half Bagan’s mid-fielder Snehasish Chakraborty was injured badly when he was brought down by Praveen Kumar but surprisingly the referee did not show any card to Praveen. Towards the closing minutes of the first half Chirag developed better moves but the forwards wasted all the created chances.
In the second half both the Kolkata teams played in a similar way and defenses of both the teams hold each other successfully but the forwards failed to find the net. More or less the second half remained uneventful and finally the match ended with the 0-0 scoreline.
Whereas today in a Group-C encounter in Silchor Churchill Brothers beat Mumbai F.C. with 1-0 scoreline. The only goal of the match was scored by Odafe Okolie from a penalty in the 70th minute of the match.

Mohammedan Sporting’s Federation Cup fight came to an end for this year. Today in a vital Group-B encounter Mahindra United beat Mohammedan with 1-0 scoreline.
In the first half Mahindra came out with early attacks but Mohammedan also soon organised themselves. Today’s match was a do or die situation for Mohammedan but the boys of Shabbir Ali failed to deliver enchanted performance. The first half remained quite un-eventful though Mahindra certainly was the better one among the two.
Early in the second half Mahindra increased their pressure and in the 52nd minute when a powerful strike of Muritala Ali was deflected by the Mohammedan keeper then Paresh Shivalkar followed the rebound and put the ball into the net to put his team ahead in the match. In rest of the time Mohammedan players tried hard but the Mahindra players were alerted and they protected the lead successfully till the end and finally the match ended with 1-0 score in favour of Mahindra. With this win Mahindra is now at the top of the Group-B and they need just a draw against Mohun Bagan to reach the semis.
While in Silchor in a vital Group-C match Sporting Club de Goa registered a 2-0 victory over HAL and Nathanial Amos scored both the goals for Sporting Club de Goa respectively in the 15th and 72nd minute of the match.

21.12.2009 ::The Goa Football Association (GFA) has entrusted the responsibility to the Goan populace to pick the final All Star Goa Team, comprising 11 star footballers who played for the state in the last 50 years (since 1959) so as to honour the ‘best eleven’ during the GFA’s Golden Jubilee celebration function on December 22.
The GFA at a press conference held at its headquarters on Friday, revealed a gleaming list of 59 stalwarts, consisting of players mostly known to those in the pre-liberation era, but made up of only a few known to the younger generation with the likes of Mahesh Gawli, Climax Lawrence, Bruno Coutinho, Felix D’Souza making the list.
Having relied mainly on the likes of greats of yesteryears comprising Bent Minguel Fernandes, Dr Wilson, Rene D’Souza and Henry Brito, the GFA arrived at a list of players who played in the first 25 years since inception of GFA in 1959. The last 25 years were dealt by the GFA committee itself as a big list was cut down to around 70 to 80 players.
However, with the idea being to pick a final list of 50 players, the GFA then depended on experienced administrators in the form of AIFF secretary Mr Alberto Colaco and Mr Antonio Botelho, both former GFA secretaries, to trim the list down further. But as proclaimed by Mr Botelho, both he and Mr Colaco too were left with an arduous task of picking the best 50 and almost did a near perfect job by finally succeeding in arriving at a list of 59. Not a bad effort considering that the D-Day for Golden Jubilee is hardly 12 days away.
But as conceded by GFA secretary, Mr Savio Messias, the job of selecting players for All Star Goa team turned out to be much harder than expected and with the experience of Mr Colaco and Mr Botelho coming in handy - both of whom have seen almost everyone in the list ply their trade during their younger days – the task of picking the final 11 who would make it to the All Star Goa Team is now left to the people in general, both old and young to make their choice and select the Star XI. Although a few players named in the list are no more, the choice is vast, considering that football has evolved over the past 50 years, more importantly in relation to the playing formation which has shed its old self fom the earlier 2-5-3 to the present 4-2-4 or 4-3-3.
The list of 59 players, which needs to be pruned to an All Star Goa team comprises 7 goalkeeper, 16 defenders, 19 midfielders and 17 strikers.
The 50th anniversary celebrations will be held at Wild Orchid, Majorda on December 22 and the gala function is likely to be graced by AIFF president Mr Praful Patel and secretary Mr Alberto Colaco. Presidents and secretaries of GFA clubs will also be invited. The members of the star Goa team will be presented with a silver plate by GFA vice-president Mr Vinod Parkkot, in memory of his father. The winner’s name who selects the all star Goan team will also be declared at the function and rewarded.
