But today Bagan defeated the Calcutta Customs Club with a narrow margin of 1-0 scoreline though in the match the Bagan strikers wasted number of opportunities to score further.

As expected Mohun Bagan dominated the match from the very first minute. The foreigner less team of Bastav Roy provided quite a tough fight by the efforts of young local players but that is not enough to hold a team like Mohun Bagan. In fact within first 20 minutes Tomba Singh and Edeh Chidi missed couple of close chances to score. Finally in the 36th minute Snehasish Chakraborty was trapped down inside the penalty box by Customs defender Umesh Beshara and referee awarded penalty to Mohun Bagan from which Chidi scores a comfortable goal to put his team ahead in the match. The rest of the first half remained uneventful.

Mohun Bagan also continued their domination in the second half but Customs also built up certain counters but were well denied by the alerted Bagan defence and youngster Man of the Match Sagram Mandi played a vital role in defence. However during the span in 73rd and 82nd minutes Chidi and Tomba respectively made to close misses whereas in the 87th minute substitute Branco Cardoso wasted a golden opportunity to increase the lead. Finally the match ended with 1-0 scoreline in favour of Mohun Bagan which confirms 3 vital points for the team of Karim Bencharifa.

1-2 Upset for East Bengal against Tollygunj Agragami in CFL.

27.11.2009 :: Debashis Majumder:In a vital Sahara CFL Premier Division encounter Tollygunj Agragami registered a surprise 2-1 victory over East Bengal at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake. After a last minute goal defeat against Chirag United in their previous match today the boys of Ranjan Chowdhury delivered their best to clinch all the 3 points from East Bengal while after a draw against Railway F.C. today Phillip de Rider’s team faced a very crucial defeat.

With the kick off as expected East Bengal started to dominate the game and as early as in the 6th minute of the match Malsawkima took a well directed shot which has been saved by the Tollygunj keeper Nasibul Haque. But in the 15th minute of the match against the run of play Nooruddin scored the opening goal to put Tollygunj ahead in the match. After conceding the goal East Bengal increased their pressure on Tollygunj goal and in the 35th minute Abel Hammond’s shot was deflected in the goal post and Budhiram Tudu missed a golden chance of equalizing from the rebound due to a great save of Tollygunj keeper Nasibul. Finally in the 43rd minute Harmanjyot Khabra scored the equalizer for East Bengal.

In the second half East Bengal continued their dominance in the match but all their attempts were repeatedly denied by the well alerted Tollygunj defence. Tollygunj on the other hand also organized certain effective counter attacks. Finally in the 80th minute Nooruddin again found the net and put his team 2-1 up by scoring a fantastic goal. In the closing minutes East Bengal players missed certain close chances to equalize which turned very much costly to them at the end of the day. On the other hand till the final whistle Tollygunj defence became successful to protect the final lead which bring a 2-1 victory for Tollygunj against East Bengal.

Because of his two vital goals in the match Nooruddin was awarded as the Man of the Match while the series of miss attempts in the match cost a 1-2 upset for East Bengal.

Thierry (Handler) Henry, FIFA and the game of football.

27.11.2009 :: RANA BOSE :It was the crucial World Cup 2010 qualifier match between the Republic of Ireland and France. Both teams needed a win in this play-off to buy their ticket to Johannesburg next summer.

At the end, France did, but amidst a raging controversy which saw Ireland being cruelly knocked out thanks to a Thierry Henry handball. Ireland went into the 2nd leg of the game 1-0 behind from a Nicolas Anelka goal in the first leg in Dublin, and went level in the game at Stade de France, Paris through Robbie Keane. Ireland played their heart out, whilst France were poor, tentative and distraught. Nicolas Anelka dived in search of a penalty as goalkeeper Shay Given came out, and thankfully the referee did not give the penalty but surprisingly, did not book Anelka for diving either. This was the first instance of cheating by the French team and inept match refereeing by Swedish referee Martin Hansson.

Late in the first half of the extra-time, Thierry Henry did clearly handle the ball twice, before laying it to ex-Arsenal teammate William Gallas, who scored the winning goal for France. Just about everyone in Ireland saw the deliberate handling, including the whole team, yet the referee gave the goal and the assistants did not do anything to report the horrendous error. With one, perhaps two, touches on Wednesday night in Paris, Thierry Henry cemented his country's place in this summer's FIFA World Cup in South Africa. But it was not with his often graceful, sometimes majestic foot that the Barcelona star undid the Irish defense.

It is ironic that Thierry Henry, perhaps one of the most gentleman amongst contemporary footballers would cheat like that during a football game, although nearly every player would probably be tempted to do the same if they were that frustrated during a match, and their World Cup 2010 campaign in jeopardy.

Although after the final whistle, Henry did step forward to admit his “unintentional” handball, noting he told the referee of the incident on the field after France was awarded the goal. As captain of the national team, he immediately reached out to the Irish players, particularly Richard Dunne, the Irish defender, after the game finished. Dunne was quoted in a newspaper, “He's admitted he cheated,” and claimed that Henry intended to handle the ball. At the end of the game he was seen to be actually apologizing or trying to comfort the Irish players who had put in so much effort over the two legs, but at the same time it appeared that at the time of the goal he clearly moved his hand to control the ball and stop it going out of play, it was clearly not a case of a ball-to-hand decision, on the contrary it looked a clear repetition of a tried and tested means of hood-winking in a game of football.

Without sounding unduly bitter or harsh towards the French or being unduly sympathetic to the Irish or having a personal vendetta against Thierry Henry, it just makes everyone feel that it is a harsh way for the Irish to get knocked out of a competition as big as the World Cup. At least if they were beaten fairly it would have been an easier pill to swallow for them. Instead, Henry split through the shamrock back-four and handled the ball not once but twice before delicately lifting it with his foot towards his surging teammate, William Gallas, the French national team defender, would put the goal away with his head. The Irish had been undone before a crowd of over 80,000 in the French capital in a manner most foul.

Thierry Henry's career has been a remarkable one. He has won titles in France, England, and Spain as well as the World Cup and European Championship. He is the leading goal scorer of Arsenal F.C. in the English Premier League and has been awarded the Legion d'honneur -- France's highest honor. But with two touches he turned a world of admirers into enemies, alienating himself and his career from all its heights.

Henry admitted to the foul, but blamed the referee. “I played it and we scored, but it was the referee’s decision. That’s why the Irish all ran to him, not to me,” he said to The Irish Times. The backlash in the Irish and English press has been vicious. Many of the sports columnists have questioned his integrity and has labeled Henry a cheat. The Times lambasted him and even branded him as being insincere, a faker, and someone who cares only about himself. This has prompted Henry to contemplate retirement from international football. For if he does not do so, a hostile reception awaits him everytime he steps out on the football turf henceforth.

The media as well as players and managers from around the world blasted the French star in the aftermath of the incident. Henry admits he regretted the way he celebrated the decisive goal. He said: “I shouldn't have done that but, frankly, it was uncontrollable, after all we had been through.” Arsene Wenger last night called on France to replay their World Cup play-off with the Republic of Ireland - and insisted the pride of his country is at stake. The Arsenal chief revered in his homeland where his compatriots rate the Gunners boss as one of the best French managers of all time wants the under-fire French Football Federation to make a special plea to FIFA, who rejected the FAI's appeal yesterday to have the game played again.

Despite FAI’s best efforts for a replay, which would have restored the integrity of the game in front of a worldwide audience, the calls appear to have fallen on deaf ears at the French Football Federation and FIFA. Without doubt, the credibility of fair play has been damaged by this incident in front of a worldwide audience. FIFA said in a statement. “As is clearly mentioned in the Laws of the Game, during matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final.” FIFA rejected Ireland's request to replay its World Cup qualifier against France on Friday, while Thierry Henry said a rematch would be “the fairest solution” to resolve the furor over the hand ball that set up the deciding goal. Turning down an appeal by the Football Association of Ireland as well as pressure from lawmakers in both countries, FIFA said it could not interfere and the referee’s decision to allow the goal stands. “The result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed,” Consequently the possibility of a rematch is out of question.

The inconsistency exists in that FIFA did order Uzbekistan and Bahrain to replay a World Cup qualifying match in 2005 following a referee’s critical error. However, there is no precedent to order a replay because of second-guessing a referee's judgment on the field of play. Irish lawmaker Joe McHugh said France should follow the 1999 precedent set by Arsenal manager Wenger, who volunteered to replay a match in England's FA Cup after the Gunners won on an unfair goal. Wenger himself backed calls to replay the match. "I like justice in sport," Wenger said. "There are only two opportunities. One is France can offer to replay, which I support personally. The second is that FIFA has to make a decision on that issue."

Such travesties of inaccurate refereeing has been there for decades and FIFA, the apex body of world football has done little to minimise such errors. First it was Alan Hurst who scored a controversial goal against West Germany in 1966 at Wembley, then in 1986 England were paid back as Argentina's Diego Maradona used “The Hand of God” to oust them from the World Cup.

In the end, the situation comes down to a failure in officiating, not the cheating of a single player. In soccer, like in all sports, players cheat. They dive. They feign injuries. They commit illegal tackles. No different than bankers seeking that extra edge illegally, players will pursue the win without regard for law. It is natural. And much like in finance where regulation is necessary to control the power of greed, so too is officiating needed to prevent cheating. FIFA must look to find a solution to the issue of goal line decision-making, the failure of their current officiating system, while maintaining the flow of the game. But, like in banking, this task has never been the simplest.

Until referees can use video technology incidents such as this will continue to occur and the bigger the game the bigger the furor. Ideally, FIFA should accept the presence of goal-line referees in all competitive matches and not just the Europa League where the presence of the two judges at either end is being experimented. There has been a drastic reduction in “within-the-box” feigning which is good for the game. The one thing that never gets mentioned when this issue is debated is the fact that if players knew each incident was going to be under the scanner there would be no incentive to cheat. Automatically the number of incidents which needed to be looked at would decrease simply because teams could not benefit but only be penalized from players cheating. The whole culture of football would change overnight for the better.

FIFA should now realize that football is no more a sport but a manifestation of supremacy of the victor over the vanquished. The extraordinary meeting of the General Body in Cape Town on 2nd December will deliberate on the Thierry Henry case besides the allegation of match fixing unearthed by the German police. It will also deliberate on the trouble that brewed in the Algeria versus Egypt qualifier in Cairo where fans and players of the Algerian side were injured after the Egyptians stoned their team bus. Although Algeria qualified beating Egypt in a play-off match in Khartoum by the slenderest margin there are far severe connotations about the security of the visiting side and the obligations of the host team or nation. The football fraternity will like to see the apex body acts decisively to ruthlessly stamp out violence and intrigues from this wonderful game of football.

FIFA Emergency Meeting Regarding the Play Off Controversies..

25.11.2009 :FIFA calls an extraordinary and emergency general meeting mainly to discuss about the controversies raised due to the World Cup Play Off matches last week. The chief agenda of this meeting will be Thierry Henry’s handball in France’s tie against the Republic of Ireland which pulled out Ireland from the World Cup 2010.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) stated that Henry just broke all the hearts of the Irish people with this action. Though the Barcelona striker has since apologies for the incident and claimed that a replay would be the fairest solution for all concerned but despite a written request of the FAI to FIFA the French Football Federation rejects the idea of having a replay which turns the situation more complex.

Among the other issues which will be discussed in this meeting the violent clashes that marred Egypt and Algeria’s games and Iraq’s suspension from World football will be regarded as the serious crisis.

Chiddi’s Hattrick Led Comfortable 4-0 Victory for Mohun Bagan ..

25.11.2009; Debashis Majumder:This season in Mohun Bagan proves to be a hattrick special season for Edeh Chiddi. Chiddi scores another hattrick for his team and this time against Kalighat Milan Sangha in a Sahara Premier Division Calcutta Football League encounter and Mohun Bagan ended the day with a comfortable 4-0 victory.

With the kick off as the superior team Mohun Bagan started to dominate the match though the boys of Karim Bencharifa could not produce such a level of constructive game as expected for them in the first half. But still as a result of continuous attack Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 26th minute of the match. Due to a misunderstanding between Kalighat M.S. keeper Debjit Majumder and defender Daniel an ordinary free kick of Isfaq Ahmed went into the Kalighat M.S. net to put Mohun Bagan ahead in the match. Immediately after the goal Chiddi missed a very close chance to score. The rest of the first half remained pretty uneventful.

In the second half Mohun Bagan continued their dominance and in the 50th minute Zenith’s corner deflected in the hands of a Kalighat M.S. defender inside the penalty box. Referee made no hesitation to give a spot kick to Mohun Bagan and Chiddi made no mistake to score from the penalty to make the scoreline 2-0 for Mohun Bagan. During this span of time due to the efforts of Man of the Match U-19 player Souvik Chakraborty Mohun Bagan mid-field started to play more positive football in an organized manner. In the 54th minute Kalighat M.S. keeper Debjit Majumder made a terrible mistake and Chiddi again turned this opportunity into another goal to further increase the lead.

Towards the end of the match the boys of Arun Ghosh tried to build some positive attacks but in the 90th minute Chiddi scored the final goal for Mohun Bagan in a fantastic way which also brought the hattrick to him. Finally Mohun Bagan registered a comfortable 4-0 victory over Kalighat M.S. in their second match of this edition of the Sahara Premier Division Calcutta Football League.

Interview of England and Chelsea Midfielder Frank Lampard..

24.11.2009 : Q: Frank, what are your big targets for this season?

A: With Chelsea, I have a real strong priority to win the premier League back. That will be a running theme through our team. I have spoken to John Terry, Ashley Cole and all the players and there was nothing better than those two seasons we had, when we felt we were the best team in England – and we were. That’s foremost. And then, obviously, with England to do the best possible at the World Cup. It’s all up for grabs this year.

Q:What are your impressions of Carlo Ancelotti, your new coach at Chelsea?

A:I’m very impressed. He has a lot of strengths, but, for me, the main ones that stick out are being very close to his players and being very organised. I think from the first day we came back for pre-season training we’ve been working on being organised and being together and that can only hold us in good stead for the season.

Q:Can you give an example of what he has changed with the team? We know he has changed the formation, which we will discuss later, but what about things on the training ground?

A:Training has changed a lot. We did quite a lot of running without the ball last year, whereas this year there is a lot more running with the ball and a lot more footballbased stuff. That’s something players always want to do, especially if they can bring something new into their game. From the first day I came back we were playing small-sided games, keeping possession and working with the ball, so there has been a nice mix of working hard and playing football.

Whereas in defence along with Du Man of the Match Arnab Mondal delivered excellent performances.

Habibur is Ready to get back in Action Soon..

21.11.2009 :: Debashis Majumder :: Habibur Rahaman Mondol- the Indian International Footballer and currently a star player of McDowell Mohun Bagan are out of action for quite a few times due to his injury problem. But presently he has recovered his physical fitness and early waiting to come back in action.

Habibur’s father Late Mr. Sakir Ali Mondol and his elder brother Mr. Mehboob Rahaman Mondol have the great inspirational role behind his football career. Habibur have quite a bit similarity with the Ivory Coast striker of Chelsea Didier Drogba who started his football career as a defender and finally turns into a striker.

In case of Habibur the impression is quite reverse. In his early life he started his football career as a striker and then gradually turns into a defender and in now days he is one of the strongest pillars of Bagan defence. Although he also scores certain vitals goals for his team when they are necessarily needed.

Kolkatafootball.com volunteer correspondent Debashis Majumder had the privilege to have a direct conversation with Habibur Rahaman Mondol who shares certain of his feelings regarding his fitness and come back opportunities.

The abstract of the conversation with Habibur

KFC : How are you now?

    Habibur: Fit and Fine.

KFC : Due to your physical problem you were admitted in the Peerless Hospital for some days and then you are sent in rest by your club. You are not in action for quite a few times. How far you think you are fit now?

Habibur: Almost 85% and very soon I will be completely match fit.

KFC : Till now what was your last match for Mohun Bagan?

Habibur: The Super Cup match of last season.

KFC : Mohun Bagan registered a historic 5-3 victory over East Bengal is this edition of I-League. But due to your injury you could not play the match. Anyhow what is your feeling as a Mohun Bagan player for this historic win?

Habibur: Mohun Bagan proves their actual strength. It is an absolute reply to the 5 goal victory of East Bengal over Mohun Bagan 34 years earlier. Mohun Bagan shows that they also have the capability to return the 5 goal reply. As a Mohun Bagan player I feel very much proud for this historic victory.

KFC : It has been a long time to win the national league by a Kolkata team. Mohun Bagan last time won in 2003 followed by East Bengal in 2004 but after that the national league till now never returns to Kolkata. In fact last year in spite of the impressive performance delivered by Mohun Bagan your teams ended the I-League Campaign as the Runners Up. In this year also Mohun Bagan made a slow start and currently your team is now in 5th position of the League table with 12 points in 8 matches. What is your expectation from your team in this edition? Do you really think Mohun Bagan can be the Champions of I-League this year?

Habibur: This year I-League is surely coming to Kolkata and definitely Mohun Bagan will take this honour as the Champions. In fact Mohun Bagan made a much better start in this year than the previous edition. We have a strong line up to be the prime contestant for the title. Mohun Bagan will definitely come out with better result this time.

KFC : What is your expectation regarding the CFL?

Habibur: We won the CFL title last year and we will retain it back this time. I am hopeful that Mohun Bagan will register an excellent result in this edition of CFL.

KFC : Are you satisfied with the present format of the tournaments in this season’s calendar? Do you think that it can make problems for the players?

Habibur: I am not yet satisfied with this format. It can make confusion not only for the players but also for the supporters. In my opinion a tournament must start after the completion of the previous one. In that case the players can make proper concentration in their game.

KFC : How are you preparing yourself to become match fit?

Habibur: By regularly attending Gym in the morning and by the usual practice in the evening.

KFC : In previous edition of Santosh Trophy Bengal finished as the Runners Up in a very close final encounter against Goa. You could not play the final due to your injury. If this time again you get selected in the Bengal team what will be your plan for the trophy?

Habibur: Last year in Santosh trophy Bengal made an excellent run but unfortunately we loss the final in tie-breaker. If I am get reselected in this year’s team my only goal will be to get the championship. I will definitely give my best to get the Santosh Trophy for Bengal.

KFC : The Mohun Bagan fans are eagerly waiting to see you back in action for their team with your trade mark jersy no. 5. When will you be back in action for Mohun Bagan?

Habibur: I think within a week I will be come back in action.

KFC :Ok, Thank you Habibur. Nice for this conversation. Good Luck and Bye.

    Habibur:Thank you..Ok..Bye.
