Bulletin of FPWA of Kashmir...

15.10.2009 :With no systematic rehabilitation program for injured sports persons in the State, many talented boys either lost interest in the sports or the injuries hampered their career badly.

To ensure that the career of the soccer players doesn’t get affected, Football Players Welfare Association (FPWA) has taken the bold initiative to cater to the injured players by facilitating them proper rehab. In collaboration with Dr Ashai Physio Therapy, Fitness and Rehabilitation Center, FPWA has facilitated the rehabilitation of almost forty injured soccer players in two months since its establishment here in the State.“All most every injured player has recovered and some of them are under rehabilitation,” said Valley’s renowned Physio, Dr Ajaz Ashai.

Dr Ashai said the injured players were from leading clubs of the Valley. “We don’t want to play with the career of the players. We give separate time to the players recommended by FPWA,” said Dr Ashai.

On why there were many injured players from leading clubs which have Physio’s, Dr Ashai cited lack of facilities as the main reason for their injuries.

“A team should have a fully equipped rehabilitation centre which the team Physio can utilize. The teams, here, have Physio’s but lack facilities. Injuries can’t be redressed fully without rehabilitation center,” said Dr Ashai.

As the players are not able to pay fee to Physio for his treatment, FPWA takes the responsibility of the injured player for his whole treatment. FPWA charges a soccer player only Rs 200 as a monthly membership fee and takes the responsibility of his full rehabilitation.

“This is small amount as compared to the fee charged by any Physio. He charges nearly Rs 100 per visit. Now, players will not get discouraged if they pick up any injury. They can avail the facility rehabilitation in our clinic,” added the Physio.

Ironically, some of the talented players from leading clubs had to undergo surgery which cost them in thousands. The SRTC football team defender, Sajad Ahmad Sheikh, had to take loan to the tune of Rs one lakh for his rehabilitation.

“I got disappointed as nobody helped me. I approached ministers for my rehabilitation but there was no response from them. I had to take loan,” said Sheikh.

Sheikh is now under rehabilitation at Dr Ashais physiotherapy center. “I am recovering now. Had FPWA been established earlier, I would not have to take loan for rehabilitation,” said Sheikh.

Vice-president FPWA, Sajid Dar, said that the association is for the welfare of the players. “Everybody is contributing here and helping their colleagues. The players need to be properly taken care of for their career. The system of rehabilitation gives players hope for prolonged career,” said Dar

Argentina Vs Uruguay : Do or Die match

15.10.2009 :"Diego Maradona's two-time world champions Argentina will go all out for glory and seek to stun their hosts Uruguay on the counter attack to ensure a berth in next summer's World Cup finals" striker Martin Palermo said Tuesday.Uruguay takes on Argentina in World Cup 2010 qualification on 14 October 2009 at the Estadio Centenario, Montevideo.

Argentina is facing a threat of missing out on a world cup place for the fist time in 70 years, while Uruguay is desperate to ensure their world cup berth this time because the two-time world cup champions failed to qualify for the last world cup in 2006. So, all the elements are present indicating an exciting match.

Under Diego Maradona's coaching ,Argentina have endured a poor performances in world cup South American Qyalifying matches, suffering six defeats in 17 games. Failure to win in against Uruguay in Montevideo will mean either a playoff against an opponent from Central America - or potentially total elimination from Next years World Cup.

Uruguay are a point behind them while Ecuador could also still bag the final automatic qualifying place, which Argentina currently occupy, with a win in Chile. But Palermo says the albiceleste will strain every last sinew to ensure they get the three points they need.

Maradona, who has run the rule over more than 70 players since taking over a year ago from Alfio Basile, will try to stun the Uruguayans on the counter attack with the 4-4-2 formation which served him well in last year's friendly win over France although it misfired in the qualifying loss in Ecuador.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez told that "we will go for the win while totally respecting our opponents", in a match highlighting a rivalry spanning 108 years.

There are some If for Argentina

1. If Argentina wins over Uruguay, then Maradona boys would directly qualify for the world cup as one of the top four teams of this region.

2. If Argentina draws with Uruguay, then Argentina would ensure at least the fifth place in the standing- meaning the play-off berth. However, Argentina can go into the world cup finals directly even with a draw, if Ecuador fails to defeat Chile by at least 6 goals.

3. If Argentina loses to Uruguay, then there is every possibility Maradona boys would be out of the world cup. However, Argentina can still go into the world cup through play-off even if they lose to Uruguay. How? Well, to do so, Ecuador must not defeat Chile. That means Argentina can clinch the fifth place in the point table ever with a defeat to Uruguay, if Chile does not lose to Ecuador.

There are some If for Uruguay

1. If Uruguay wins against Argentina, then the home side would ensure their direct qualification to the world cup finals in South Africa next year. Without a win over Argentina, there is no way Uruguay can clinch a world cup place directly as the top four teams in the point table.

2. If Uruguay draws with Argentina, then Uruguay can reach the world cup finals only through play-off. However, to make this happen, Chile must not lose to Ecuador.

3. If Uruguay loses to Argentina, then they could be out of the world cup. However, there is possibility that Uruguay can clinch the fifth place in the standing even if they are defeated by Argentina. However, to make this happen:

(a) Ecuador can not win over Chile; (b) even if Ecuador draws with Chile, Uruguay’s losing margin against Argentina can not be more than 11 goals;

THE LAST MATCH OF ARGENTINA

Argentina beat Peru 2 -1 at home on Saturday through a last-gasp goal from Martin Palermo.Boca Junior's Player Martin Palermo scored with virtually no time left to spark scenes of celebration in Argentina, and he made manager Diego Maradona look brilliant as he came off as a second-half substitute.

With Palermo - Messi pair, the Argentineans need a much better performance on Wednesday against Uruguay.

THE LAST MATCH OF Uruguay

Diego Forlan’s injury-time goal from penalty was the difference in a 2 - 1 win for Uruguay against Ecuador, and Forlan has proven it with a great club career and he always answers the call for his country, but will it be enough to will Uruguay to the World Cup finals in South Africa 2010?

RESURGENT KF EAST BENGAL REGAIN OLD FORM

11.10.2009 :East Bengal fans left the YBK Stadium today contented and satisfied after witnessing the ONGC I-League match against JCT here at Kolkata. The home team playing with a 4-4-2 formation played sublime football and even could have won the match had Nabi and Yakubu, their lone foreigner missed chances.East Bengal was also unlucky not to be given a penalty after Yakubu's pass to Gobin hit Gurwinder's hand inside the penalty box in the 88th minute.

In fact East Bengal could have wrapped up the issue in the 43rd minute itself after Yakubu's 6 yard shot from inside the box went over the crosspiece much to the relief of the JCT players. In the 73rd minute, a long high ball was headed by Bhaichung to an unmarked Nabi but his flick header was well saved by an alert Karanjit who excelled today with his reflexes, outings and fine anticipations. In fact he could have got the MOM today.

JCT who took the field with 2 wins from as many matches were looking to win the match and also played with a 4-4-2 formation but a resurgent East Bengal denied them full points. For the visitors, Balwant Singh and Baldeep Saini played good football but were held at bay by some dogged defending by the East Bengal defenders. MOM of the last match, Penn Orji, JCT's lone foreigner was marked zonally and so was denied a clear look at the goal.

With this performance, East Bengal fans would be relieved ahead of the Derby match against M.Mohun Bagan on 25th October at Kolkata. Coach Subash Bhowmick will get another opportunity to test and fine tune his first team and reserve bench in their opening IFA Sahara CFL Premier Division match next week. However East Bengal are still awaiting their first win in the 2009-2010 season having played 7 matches in the IFA Shield, Durand Cup and ongoing I-League.

With this Goal less Draw, JCT are on the top half of the League table with 7 points from 3 matches while East Bengal have just 2 points from as many matches.

Argentina beat Peru 2 - 1

11.10.2009 :Argentina beat Peru 2-1 Saturday in Buenos Aires to survive in their pursuit of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

In his national team debut, Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain put Argentina ahead to start the second half.

Argentina, dominant in the first half. Lionel Messi marked tightly on the right of the attack, Argentina were more dangerous on the left flank with Angel Di Maria linking well with Higuain.

Higuain wasted two good chances some 20 minutes into the game, and playmaker Pablo Aimar, who was generally imprecise in his passes, fumbled another. Barcelona star Lionel Messi again made few contributions to Argentina's play and only tried his luck once from a far.

In the second half, Peru changed their attitude radically. Immediately after the break, Juan Vargas was almost on target with a beautiful, long-range half-volley, while Johan Fano also tested Argentine keeper Sergio Romero.

In the 47th minute, a great pass from Pablo Aimar in the box, Higuain, who scored with an right-foot shot.

Ten minutes later, Romero blocked a good shot from Carlos Zambrano, and Luis Ramirez picked up the rebound. Emiliano Insua blocked the ball with his arm, but the referee failed to award Peru a penalty.

In the 65th minute, Argentine defender Rolando Schiavi even came close to scoring an own goal.

In the 89th minute, Hernan Rengifo of Peru equalized with a header which appeared to give Peru a well- deserved draw.

However, Boca Juniors veteran Palermo ( 'Saint Palermo.') gave Argentina, the host of the match a dramatic win, though arguably from an off-side position in last minutes of the match.

'This is a most important goal for me,' said Palermo.Argentina Coach Diego Maradona called it a 'dramatic' win and admitted that Peru's goal in the middle of a wind and rain storm in Buenos Aires was a shock.'We weren't expecting it. The match was already over,' he said. 'Then came yet another miracle from Saint Palermo, which gives us one more life.'

Mohun Bagan sends a letter to AIFF against refereeing in I-League

09.10.2009 : Three times Indian National Football League Champion (Currently I-League) M.Mohun Bagan sent a letter to AIFF against referring in this I-League. They lost two matches against Chirag United and JCT uptp 2nd Round.

Below is the Press Release of the Letter to AIFF by Mohun Bagan.

The General Secretary,
All India Football Federation,
Football House,
Dwarka, New Delhi
Dear Sir,

We regret to inform you that McDowell Mohun Bagan has been at the receiving end of a number of decisions taken by the Referees during the opening two rounds of the ONGC I-League 20092010.In the first match against Chirag United held at Kolkata on 5th October 2009, four of our players were cautioned while one was' red carded, while the Referee chose to ignore a cynical foul committed by Chirag United player, Eduardo Chacon on our forward Chidi Edeh in the first half of the match. In the second match against JCT held on 8th October 2009 at Kolkata, again four of our players were flashed yellow cards.

Our defender Deepak Kumar Mandal was cautioned twice in this match and consequently he was expelled. We are sending you a CD of the recording of the entire match and it is very clear from action replays that Deepak cleared the ball through a sliding tackle near the sideline rather than aim for the legs of no.

9 player of JCT during the fag end of the match. However to everyone ' s surprise, Deepak who was already cautioned before was given a 2nd yellow card and we had to play the 10 minutes of injury time with 10 men. On the other hand, our player Mohanraj was hit on the chest during the second half and he lay there on the ground vomiting and had to be shifted immediately to the Hospital for urgent medical treatment but no JCT player was cautioned. In the second half, our forward Suraj Mondal was sandwiched in the opponent penalty box between two JCT defenders one of whom brought him down inside the box.

This was clearly a penalty but no penalty was awarded to us. We regret that some of the Referees are trying to deprive our Team and give an unfair advantage to our opponents at our cost. These plethora of red and yellow cards against our Team are meant to lower the morale of the players so that they will be very conscious while going for tackles or 50-50 balls. Consequently they will not be able to deliver 100% for the Team, which will adversely affect the performance of the Team.

The red cards not only handicaps the team in that match but also renders the player out of action for the next match causing immense problems in fielding a good team. We agree fully that Referees are human beings and apt to make mistakes but what we are concerned with is why these mistakes are repeatedly happening only in our case!

Yesterday's match was telecast live and most of our members, fans and supporters watched the match either on TV or were present at the ground. Action replay of the Deepak MandaI second yellow card is also present on the website www.youtube.com and can easily be viewed by football lovers globally. refereeing decisions targeted at their Team and it will not be possible for us to contain their emotional outburst if such incidents recur. Moreover it also mars the spirit of the I-League which has attracted Sponsors who in turn would like to gain their due mileage.

We leave it to AIFF to please watch the match recording and to please do the needful if the Federation wants to take Indian Football and the I-League forward to the next higher dimension rather than just allowing appeasement of a few stakeholders at the cost of others. We shall be forced to take a strong decision in the best interests of the Club and its members and supporters if we are denied justice.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

AnJan Kumar Mitra

Hony. General Secretary

Mahindra United Vs East Bengal match : Weather improves

06.10.2009 :In all probability, the 2nd round ONGC I-League match between Mahindra United and East Bengal scheduled tommorrow at Cooperage, Mumbai would kickoff at 3:30 pm.

It was learnt from Mr. Shabbir Ahmed, former Football Secretary of Mohammedan S.C and currently the Co-ordinator of WIFA (L.O.C.) and who is also the Local Manager of the East Bengal team in I-League 2009-2010 , that since the rain gods had relented today there is a bright chance of the match being played tomorrow, as per schedule. It may be recalled that incessant rains in Mumbai since last few days had cast a doubt on this match.

Mahindra United who would be enjoying home ground advantage and who held mighty Churchill Brothers 1-1 in their opening match would certainly be praying for a rain-free day in order to garner three points in their kitty.

East Bengal on the other hand will be eyeing their first win in this season after being bolstered by the addition of Bhaichung Bhutia and Yusuf Yakubu in their forward line.

SAHARA CFL (Premier League ) may start from 12th Oct

06.10.2009 :A meeting was held today at the IFA Office involving representatives of all the 17 teams of the CFL Super Division 2009. Normally every year the Premier Division commences around July and finishes just before the Durga Puja. However this year the matches would commence on and from 12th October 2009 and would tentatively end by end February 2010. It would be a single leg affair unlike earlier editions which were double leg.

The ONGC I-League matches of three clubs from the State namely, Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and United SC were taken into account while preparing the Draft Fixture. According to this tentative fixture, East Bengal will play its first match on 14th October while Mohun Bagan would play the next day. It would also be the first instance that I-League teams from Bengal would have to participate in the CFL simultaneously during the same time period.

There was an understanding on part of AIFF that matches of the I-League would be held on weekends to facilitate matches of the CFL which was then supposed to be organised on weekdays. However the I-League fixture released by AIFF last month did not adhere to this understanding leaving the fate of CFL in a quandry.

It is expected that within a week the final fixture for the first several rounds of the CFL would be released formally by IFA.

15 Guardian Angels from Bengal in I-League

04.10.2009 : ABHISHEK BHATTACHARYYA ::The third edition of I-League kicked off in style this week promising some great clashes in coming months. Indian football is on a role after a well concluded Barcelona Tour and the triumphant Nehru Cup campaign as the likes of Chetri’s,Bhutia’s,Odafa’s and others are all set to unleash fire but the only barrier in their way are the 15 guardian angels who are protecting their teams goal post.Co-incidentally all are from the state of Bengal!

Indeed Bengal has produced some fine goalkeepers in the past like Sanat Sett, Tarun Bose, Atanu Bhattacharjee, Debashish Mukherjee, Bhaskar Ganguly, Sibaji Banerjee and others. Fomer Bagan Goalie and coach Atanu Bhattacharjee believes that as Bengal provides a softer turf for practice compared to the other states that’s why the goalkeepers here gets a perfect platform to achieve their required skill. He thinks that other than Subrata Paul , Mahindra custodian Subhashish Roy Chowdhury is the dark horse in this edition of I-League. This member of Indian National Squad is well-known for pulling out monstrous saves in crunch matches and he is perhaps the best penalty saver in Indian football in recent times. Bhattacharjee is extremely happy to see that out of 15 goalkeepers,10 of them will play in the first team.

From Left : Abhijit Mondol, Sandip Nandy and Abhra Mondol

Current Indian Goalkeeper Subrata Paul is perhaps the best name in the business. But East Bengal treated him like a secondary stuff and now he is all set to prove them wrong as he takes up his duty with Pune FC in this current edition of I-League.Subrata Paul’s peerless performance in AFC Challenger Cup and recently concluded Nehru Cup were his last minute penalty save clinched the title for India was superb but still he fails to get into a big club. But with the corporate support of Parimal Group, Pune FC is all set provide magic under former Mahindra United boss Derek Perreira.

Next up is the clubs from Kolkata and starting with last year’s runners-up Mohun Bagan will have Sangram Mukherjee as their main custodian who is also the captain of the team.Sangram performed consistently last season and Shilton Paul who missed out a huge time due to injury is all set to make a comeback as their second goalkeeper this season.Their rivals East Bengal will have Abhra Mondal as their main goalkeeper.Abhra who has previously represented Bengal in Santosh Trophy has a lot to prove as most of the time he was over-shadowed by Subrata Paul in the past.Former Air India goalie Arup Debnath will fill up Subhash Bhowmick’s reserve bench.

Mohun Bagan Keepers : Shilton Paul (Left) and Sangram Mukherjee

On the other hand Chirag United will be heavily depending on former Mahindra United custodian Sandip Nandy whose experience is surely going to help them a lot.Atanu Bhattacharjee believes that Sandip still has the fire power to make it to the national team and he has taken the right decision of coming back to Bengal for the time being. His last season was affected by injuries and it will be good for him to regain his fitness and confidence here in Bengal by dishing out some classy performance for Chirag United. Young Somnath Khara will also be waiting for his opportunity this season.Veteran GoalKeeper Gopal Das is also included in Chirag United this year.

Former Champion Dempo will have a reliable custodian in Abhijit Mondal who has fetched them the I-League title couple of years back as their rival and defending champion Churchill will have Arindam Bhattacharya who has performed consistently for the team.Another goan team Salgaocar will have the services of former Mumbai FC goalie Kalyan Choubey who did a commendable job with his former team and is expected to do the same with his new outfit. KALYAN who represented EB,MB,Mahindra and JCT in the past won the best goalie award when National football league kicked off in India. He has huge experience under his belt and Salgaocar can make a difference with a reliable guy like him in the back.Joining him in the squad is another Bengal Goalkeeper Amit Nandy who is also likely to get a shot in the other half of this season.

Salgaocar Keeper :Kalyan Choubey

Mohun Bagan’s goalkeeper coach Hemanta Dora’s brother Prasanta Dora will be the 2nd goalkeeper for Sukhwinder Singh’s JCT as the teams from Mumbai will have some of the best talents of Amit Singha Roy (Mumbai FC) and Arnab Das Sharma for Bimal Ghosh’s mighty Air India.

So 11 teams with 15 goalkeepers from Bengal are all set to rock the I-League as we look forward to their resistance against the very best of Indian football.
