I-League Analysis :Upto 11th Round

The ONGC I-League 2009-10 is underway and a total of 26 round matches have to be played out. By this weekend (24-Jan-10), 11 of the 26 rounds will be completed.

Looking into the drama as it unfolds every day a few peculiarities have been noticed thus far in this tournament need special mention.

a) Unlike last year’s competition, this year there is no run-away leader. That is, none of the top four or five clubs in the table can be safely predicted to win this year’s competition hands down;

b) The point difference that separates the top two teams (Mahindra United and McDowell Mohun Bagan both with 20 points) and the 6th team Mumbai FC (18 points) is only two;

c) The apparent title contenders are –

i)Mahindra United have to play 7 home matches and 6 away matches in the first leg of 13 rounds. Thereafter the second leg will see them play 6 home matches and 7 away matches. In the second leg the important away matches awaiting them are against KEB (in Kolkata), Chirag United (in Kolkata) and MMB (in Kolkata);

ii) McDowell Mohun Bagan is slightly better placed in their quest for the I-League title. They require to play 8 home matches and 5 away matches in the 2nd leg of the competition. The 5 away matches are against Chirag United, JCT, Viva Kerala and two very important outstation matches against Mumbai FC (in Mumbai) and against Churchill Brothers (in Panaji, Goa). The result of the match against Churchill Brothers will largely influence the team’s position in the I-League.

iii) Dempo Sports Club like Mahindra United have 7 home and 6 away matches to be played in the 2nd leg of the competition. The 6 away matches which could largely affect their fate are against Lajong FC (in Shillong), Mahindra United (in Mumbai) and two crunch matches in Kolkata first against Kingfisher East Bengal and their last match against McDowell Mohun Bagan. A tough ask for them anyway.

iv)Churchill Brothers the defending champions have 7 home and 6 away matches. This statistics may apparently look innocuous but thanks to the Goan lobby in the AIFF the fixture committee has given them a bonanza. Churchill Brothers are distinctly favoured as all their matches from the 21st to the final 26th round are slated on home territory. A distinct one-sided advantage for which officials of many I-League teams including McDowell Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal have protested vehemently. The last six home round matches to be played by them are against Chirag, McDowell Mohun Bagan, local outfit Sporting Clube de Goa, Kingfisher East Bengal, Lajong FC and Salgaoncar SC. There is every possibility that if it comes to the wire the Churchill boss, Alemao Churchill might use his clout to influence Salgaoncar SC to do a repeat Vasco act (9-1 match result) to improve upon the goal difference.

It is now amply clear that for winning the I-League competition a side does not only need to consistently perform better on the football field but also do a bit of lobbying and resort to evil machination to engineer a favourable situation. That is exactly what Mohun Bagan’s head coach Karim Bencherifa hinted upon a few days back in a press conference and this is what the Goan clubs are most capable of and have been doing for the last couple of years.

East Bengal will meet I- League defending Champions

Defending champions Churchill Brothers will face a full strength East Bengal in their I-League 11th round encounter without their star striker Odafe Okolie who has been ruled out due to double booking .The Match will be started 4.00 PM at Yuba Bharati Krirangan tomorrow.

The Goan giants would also miss the services of winger Khanthang Paite and right-back Robert Lalthalma, both of whom are out due to injuries. Felix Chimaokwu may be replaced in placeof OdafeOkolie by Carlos Pereira. Ogba Kalu Nnnanna, Dan Ito, Khan Thang Paite and Reisangmi Vashum may be in the squad of Churchill to secure an away victory in this season.

Full points against East Bengal tomorrow will earn Churchill (18 points) the top spot in the table and Pereira would surely have an eye on that. Five points shy of Churchill,Federation Cup winner East Bengal coach Phillippe de Ridder will look to capitalise on the absence of Odafe in their aim to close in on the top spot in frot of home crowed.Ridder will surely wants Baichung Bhutia for more times than his service of previous matches.

In the last I- League Match East Bengal had played 0 - 0 against Mumbai FC, while Churchill also made a goalless draw against Sporting Goa.

Both Joshimar and Edmilson continues their good form in this season which is a very much positive sign for Chirag .But tomorrow Chirag will miss their effective striker Josimar da Silva Martins due to his double-booking. Therefore, probably Ashim Biswas will pair up with Edmilson in the up front. Chirag also will miss Jayanta Sen (suspension) in the central defence, and injured Shylo Malsawma .

whereas Dempo has one of the best combinations among the I-League teams will miss their foreign recruits Ranty Martins and 'Beto' out for at least six weeks due to injury . Both the coaches claimed that their teams are fully prepared to face any kind of challenge which reflects the possibility of having an exciting match.The two teams who both have 18 points each in current table.

    Technological marvel in FIFA World Cup 2010

    The countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa is underway as the host nation takes on Mexico on 11th June 2010. The FIFA World Cup is considered the greatest show on earth as the viewership is more than that of the Summer Olympic Games. Countries from all five continents vie to find a place in the final 31 (the host nation being the automatic choice to fill up the 32nd slot). The South African football authorities have promised this World Cup Final to be the best ever in terms of hospitality, infrastructure and clockwork precision.

    The FIFA World Cup 2010 will also see for the first time the shift of 3D viewing from cinema house to the drawing room. From James Cameron’s Avatar one will leap-frog to the world of the Drogbas, Messis and the Ronaldos. But this technical excellence comes at a handsome price. The aspiring viewer needs to procure a new set-top box and a 3-D television as well. To watch 3D, customers will also require a new ’3D Ready’ TV. Related Links 3-D has been around for decades — the first 3-D movie Bwana Devil promised “a lion in your lap” and “a lover in your arms” in 1952 but the technology (and the glasses one has to wear) stayed chunky and unglamorous.

    But now broadcasting advances and more sophisticated TV sets mean the set manufacturers and TV executives think 3D TV is in the home is more than an illusion. Top TV makers including Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung featured 3D s creen advances in Las Vegas. Top of the 3D range was Toshiba’s ZX900 series CELL TV, which promises to convert two-dimensional images into 3D in real time, so users can watch everything from sports to video games and previously recorded shows in 3D. The Cell system boasts 143 times the processing power available in current TV models.

    Now it is much more sophisticated, but 3-D TV sets do not come cheap: in most cases they will cost £200-£300 more than comparable LED or plasma TV sets, analysts estimate. Toshiba’s CELL TV, which is expected to hit US stores in the autumn, is likely to retail at a price close to the $10,000 it sells for in Japan.

    At last week's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, electronics manufacturers from Sony to Samsung to Panasonic announced the launch of new 3D HD flat-screen TVs, with the first products likely to be on sale in Australia in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup in June.

    Sony, which is a sponsor of the soccer World Cup, will also demonstrate its 3D technology in June by showing match highlights in 3D at a live site in Sydney, one of seven it will establish around the world.

    The expense might be quite a hurdle for a lot of consumers who have only just recently shelled out for an expensive new high definition TV set. Equity anlayst Knight Chang at the Panasonic stand said: “It looks great, and there’s no doubt it’s wonderful to look at, but the price may scare people away.” In its first year of operation, ESPN 3D is all set to show live at least 25 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2010 as also some other major sporting events. ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years. For example, it showed a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and on USC's campus.

    The shift from 2-D to 3-D transmission is imminent and will become a permanent feature in future broadcasts of major sporting events across the globe. All in all promises to be a feast for the viewer’ eyes.
