Messi Magic : Barca beat Arsenal 4 - 1 to reach in the semi

The world’s best footballer, Lionel Messi lived up to hisreputation as he mesmerized Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal FC by pumping in 4 goals at their Nou Camp stadium. With this 4-1 victory and an aggregate score of 6-3 Barcelona FC march into the final of the UEFA Champions League and are to take on Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale (Inter) Milan.

Wenger had spoken about this game being the closest football comes to art before this tie. How fitting that Messi, 22, put the finishing touch to his four-goal super show by dribbling past half the Arsenal defence and beating Manuel Almunia at the second attempt.

Both teams kicked off at the Nou Camp after having met earlier in the Emirates Stadium where the score line was 2-2. Barcelona was playing with their full squad and whereas Arsenal, for a change, playing in white, had to rest quite a few of their regulars from the starting lineup. They were without their top trio, skipper Cesc Farigas, Andrey Arshavin and Alex Song.

Barcelona, started off by creating a couple of chances when stand-in captain for the night Xavi, in the absence of suspended Carlos Puyol, flicked the ball wide before Messi fired an angled shot just over the bar. It was a precursor and a sign of things to come. It came totally against the run of play as Arsenal spent the opening 15 minutes suffocated inside their own half trying to stay calm and dry in a Catalan cataclysm. Yet before the Arsenal celebrations had died down, before the shell-shocked home fans had regained consciousness, Messi flicked on the afterburner and the Gunners were left gasping for air.

In 21 minutes from hell, the planet's top footballer completed a majestic hat-trick to all but kill off the visitors.

However, it was Nicklas Bendtner who got into the act as early as the 18th minute when he struck to shock the Catalan side. Theo Walcott was put on the clear by Abou Diaby down the right wing and he dashed into the Barcelona penalty area before squaring to Bendtner. Victor Valdes did make a good reaction save, but the in-form Denmark striker was quick to stab the rebound into the net and put the English team ahead in the tie for the first time. The Gunners then wasted another chance of a breakaway, as Diaby pushed the ball left to Bendtner when Walcott was in space on the right.

However, Lionel Messi soon drew Barcelona level on the 21st minute after capitalizing on a costly defensive error by Mikael Silvestre. Silvestre, inducted in the side ahead of veteran but not fully fit Sol Campbell, failed to clear the ball on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area - and Messi needed no second invitation, lashing his shot into the top right corner.

Arsenal were again punished by Messi for some poor defending as Barcelona went 2-1 ahead on 37 minutes. Eric Abidal crossed the ball into the Arsenal box from the right, which was partially cut out by Thomas Vermaelen. However, his team-mates were slow to react as Pedro knocked the loose ball out to Messi and he smashed it past the hapless Almunia.

Messi continued to torment Arsenal as he collected the ball on the right touchline before weaving into the box and drilling a shot into the side netting. The Argentina forward then added a second from close range before dashing clear to make it 3-1 on the night just before the break, and grabbed a fourth with three minutes left to complete a comfortable 6-3 aggregate victory for the tournament holders. The Argentina international completed a stunning hat-trick four minutes before the break when he latched onto a header from Abidal to race clear before dispatching a brilliant chip over the Arsenal keeper. Messi nearly had another at the start of the second half when Pedro whipped a low ball across the Arsenal six-yard box from the right, which was just too far ahead of the Barcelona forward.

Arsenal had little choice but to go forwards, but that left the visitors exposed at the back. The visitors nearly found a way through when Diaby stabbed the ball to Bendtner just inside the Barcelona box, but the Danish striker was hustled out of possession before he could shoot on target. Thereafter, left-back Gael Clichy broke and fed Bendtner, the home defence again got back in numbers to clear.

Diaby's low ball across the edge of the Barcelona box went all the way through to Tomas Rosicky, but the Czech snatched at his shot, which flew harmlessly wide. Messi's clever quick free-kick released Pedro, but his angled chip was off target, before at the other end Bendtner's header crashed against the post - but the offside flag was up.

With 18 minutes left, Wenger sent on Eduardo for Rosicky, with Samir Nasri moving out to the left in a classical 4-4-2. Clichy knocked Alves off the ball to charge forwards, but, with team-mates well placed, drilled an ambitious but harmless shot over from 20 yards. Maxwell then forced Almunia into a good save at his near post after cutting into the right side of the Arsenal penalty area.

Messi then completed a fine night's work with another well-taken goal three minutes from time as the holders marched on towards a mouth-watering semi-final clash against Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.

Arsene Wenger's injury-hit squad must now regroup and focus on overhauling Chelsea and Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League title race. They face Tottenham next Wednesday in the Barclay’s Premier League.

Post match, Arsene Wenger was all praise for the Argentinian wonder boy. “The fourth goal he scored, I don't know many players in the world who can score that goal. He makes the impossible look possible. He has several great years ahead of him and, touchwood, if nothing happens, he can reach unbelievable levels. He's PlayStation. He can take advantage of every mistake you make. I actually believe we played quite well."

However, Wenger did not elaborate on the model of perfection. Whether he actually meant Sony PlayStation 3 or maybe 4 is anybody’s guess!!

East Bengal to face Al Qadsia in Away match tomorrow

Al Qadsia coach Mohamad Ibrahim is hoping to get maximum points with minimum effort when his side host East Bengal at Mohammed Al Hamad Stadium on Tuesday as the Kuwaitis look to take another step towards the second phase.

Al Qadsia trail leaders Al Ittihad by two points but with Lebanon's Al Nejmeh breathing down their necks, Ibrahim has highlighted that victory over Group D’s bottom side is a must.

"We want to get the three points with a minimum effort as we have a lot of important games in the next period especially next Saturday as we will be playing a tough match in the local league," said Ibrahim (pictured).

"We have met East Bengal away and they know well how to defend their own area. This means that we must play with an attacking formation in order to seal the game early.

"We must win the game because our start was not perfect after having two consecutive draws against Al Nejmeh and Al Ittihad and we must not drop any points in the remaining matches."

However, Ibrahim has concerns over the availability of Bader Al Mutawaa and Syrian striker Firas Al Khatib with both suffering from groin injuries but Ali Al Shemali could be available after recently returning to training.

"I personally hope that all the players will be ready for the next matches although the players are really tired due to the heavy schedule," added Ibrahim.

"I hope that we will not be affected by the missing players."

East Bengal arrived in Kuwait without skipper Syed Rahim Nabi, who has been left out of the squad along with Renedy Singh and Govin Singh with Belgian coach Philippe de Ridder keen to rotate his squad.

De Ridder will also miss the services of Nigerian defender Uga Okpara, who is out through suspension, as they look to collect their first point in this season's continental competition.

"The game will be hard for us as Al Qadisia is a strong team," De Ridder said.

"We are building a team for the future and our target is to have good performances and gain experience from these matches.

"We will try our best to have a good game although we will miss some of our best players. We will play without any pressure while Al Qadsia need to get a good result to maintain their chances."

National Seminar on ‘Cultures of Football’, April 20 - 21, 2010

The School of Media, Communication and Culture, Centre for Studies in African Literatures and Cultures, Jadavpur University and Valerian Soccer Foundation,Kolkata India is going to organize a two days National Seminar on ‘Cultures of Football’ on April 20 and 21, 2010 at Jadavpur University.

Organized by the School of Media, Communication and Culture and Centre for Studies in African Literatures and Cultures, Jadavpur University, and Valerian Soccer Foundation, India Football in India was introduced during the days of the British Empire. Many football clubs in India were created during this time, and pre-date many of the organisations and clubs which are predominant in the game today. The first recorded game in India took place between ‘Calcutta Club of Civilians' and ‘The Gentlemen of Barrackpore' in 1854.

Calcutta FC was the first club to be established in 1872. Other early clubs include Dalhousie Club, Traders Club and Naval Volunteers Club. Mohun Bagan Athletic Club was set up in what is now West Bengal in 1889. The club became famous in 1911 when it became the first Indian team to lift the IFA Shield, a tournament previously won only by British teams based in India. It defeated the Eastern Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 in the final of the tournament in a victory that is still regarded by many as the greatest by an Indian team before Independence.

The Indian Football Association (IFA) was established in Calcutta in 1893, but did not have a single Indian on its board until the 1930s. The national football team was also quite successful until the 1980s, qualifying for Olympic tournaments and the FIFA World Cup. The team was invited for the 1950 World Cup finals in Brazil, but could not appear as they still played bare foot at the time. The Indian team also won gold medals in football at the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games, and finished fourth at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. Football has remained one of the most popular participatory sports in the country and we feel that it is time to discuss and analyse the various social and cultural dimensions of the game.

One of the reasons for scholarly attention to the game of soccer in India has been the emergent interest of ‘Cultural Studies’in the cultures around football. Apart from the much-known centres of Indian football like Bengal,Goa,Kerala, Punjab and Manipur, there have been new entries in the national arena like Lajong FC from Shillong and Pune FC. While the North-East has always been a major grooming ground for many successful Indian footballers, the recognition earned in the official leagues by teams based in small and emerging cities is an interesting phenomenon. Internationally too the dominance of football club has increased. Football clubs like Chelsea and ManU have huge global fan followings.

Papers are invited on the following themes

1. Football and Bangla literature

2. African football and World Cup 2010

3. Football and issues of Gender

4. Spectators and Fan Cultures

5. 1911 - centenary of IFA shield winning

6. Future of Indian football

The seminar, apart from academic papers, will also host exhibitions and film screenings.

FIFA ban Iranian women footballers from wearing hijab in YOG

FIFA banned the Iranian women’s football team wearing hijab from participating in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) which will be held from August 14 to 26 in Singapore.

FIFA at first invited the Iranian team to take part in the games but unexpectedly decided to forbid wearing hijab (Islamic covering) in the games.

President of Iran Football Federation Ali Kafashian wrote a request to the world football governing body to reconsider their decision.

He pointed out that due to religious beliefs the Iranian women team will participate in the competitions only if they are allowed to observe the Islamic dress code. Altogether 170 countries are expected to participate in the 2010 Youth Summer Olympics. About 3,500 athletes and 875 accompanying persons are expected to participate in the games. Each country will send at least four athletes.

Viva Kerala Managed to get a 1-1 Draw against Chirag United

Series of chance misses cost heavily to Chirag United as the Kolkata side lost valuable points in an I-League home encounter against Viva Kerala as the boys of Anjan Nath only secured a single point from the match with 1-1 scoreline.

Today in Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake Chirag got a flourishing start as the first 10 minutes of the match was completely dominated by the home side. But after that the visitors gradually took the control of the mid-field and soon repeated attacks caused panic in the defence of the home side. In the 20th minute of the game Kingshuk Debnath made the goal line clearance for Chirag otherwise the visitors could get 1-0 ahead in the match at that time.

But the Chirag goal did not remained secure for a long time as in the 27th minute of the match Sirajuddin scored a fantastic goal by overlapping through the left flank. After conceding the goal Chirag fought hard to get the equalizer and during this span of time Chirag created number of close opportunities of leveling the scoreline and in the 37th minute finally from a brilliant free-kick of Edmilson Chirag scored the equalizer as Asim Biswas scored an intelligent goal from the rebound.

In the second half Chirag mid-field played much better than that of the first half and Chirag took the control of the match during this span of time. Chirag could easily get 2 to 3 goal up in the match but the series of chance misses prohibited the home side to take lead in the match. Especially in the 75th minute of the match Edmilson wasted the easiest opportunity of the day and thus due to this series of wasting of opportunities Chirag only managed to get a draw with Viva Kerala and thus currently remained at the third position of the league table.

In the post match press conference Chirag Coach Anjan Nath expressed his satisfaction with the way of playing of his team. He cleared the intention that though his team is now alive at the championship race but he will also be happy with the current third position of his team in the league table. While the Viva Coach argued that he expected much better performance from his boys but in the same place he is also happy that his boys confirmed at least one point from this away match.

Exciting 3-1 Win over Dempo put Mahindra at the Top of the I-League Table

Mahindra United registered an exciting 3-1 victory over Dempo Sporting Club in the 19th round encounter of the I-leauge at the Cooparage Stadium, Mumbai today. This was one of most high voltage macth of I-leauge as both the teams are strong contenders for the leauge tittle.Mahindra United had the psychological advantage as they got the support of home crowd.

However the macth started on a different note with Dempo domineted the first half of the macth.Ranty martine scored the opening goal of the match which put the visitors 1-0 up in the match only within first 14 minutes. Ranty scored with a nice header off a brilliant cross of Valeriano Rebello from the right. In rest of the first half Mahindra tried hard to level the scoreline but due to the efficient defencive organisation of the visitors the home team could not score the equalizer in the first half.

But things changed completely in the second half.By adopting an ultra defencive mode Dempo allowed the home side to get the hold of the match and that gave ample oppertunity to Mahindra to create numbers of close opportunities of scoring. The home team started putting constant pressure on visitor's defence and as a result of this Mahindra soon scored the equiliser as Debabrata Roy scuffed the ball at the center and Md.Rafi made no mistake to score the goal in the 57th minute of the match (1 - 1).Here on,the macth suddenly changed into the favour of the home team.

Mahindra's constant attack towards Dempo goal awarded them with numbers of corners and free-kicks.While at the 65th minute of the match, Muritala Ali scored a beautiful goal to give his team a 2-1 lead when he got a long clearence from Mahindra Midfield near the Dempo Box and lobbed the ball over the advancing Dempo keeper .

Towards the closing minute of the match Muritala scored the best goal of the match with a brilliant solo turn from top of the Dempo Box thus confirmed a 3-1 victory for his team over Dempo.

With this vital win Mahindra also overcame Dempo in the league table too and thus the Mumbai team currently regained the top position with 36 points, while Dempo were pushed into second place from the top spot remaining on 35 points.

Today's Man of the match winner Muritlala Ali (This is his 8th Man of the Match award in this editon of I-League upto 19th round ) became the present highest scorer of the league jointly with Odafe Okolie of Churchill brothers. Both of them have scored 15 goals each in this edition of the I-League.

While for Dempo this macth brought utter disappointment as they not only loose valuable 3 points but also loose Climax Lawrance for the next match due to his card problem as he received yellow cards in back to back two matches.
