El Clasico: Barca beat Real in Spanish La Liga

The stage was set for the 85,000 crowd, packed inside the Santiago Bernabeu and millions watching it on television. It was the clash of two powerhouse football Clubs of Europe and the World. Real Madrid FC hosted FC Barcelona with both teams level on points.

Real Madrid were missing Ricardo Kaka and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, still the line-up was still a who’s-who of world football. Yet the match was a two-dimensional, gritty, drab spectacle. Madrid had seven players defending very closely together — as the defense and the midfield squeezed every time Barcelona had the ball. A clever ploy employed by the Madrid manager, Manuel Pelligrini that denied the Catalans the space to unfold their inimitable passing game.

But wonder boy Messi still managed to wriggle his way around and exploded into the Madrid box within the first quarter. Raul Albiol blatantly hacked him down but referee, Mejuto Gonzalez, waved away the protests and failed to award the clear-cut penalty.

In the end, after a series of false dawns with both sides cancelling each other out, Barca's superiority got manifested. It was time for Messi to show who the boss was that night. The awesome Argentinian took a quick free-kick to Xavi and the Spanish ace played an imperious pass back to him before he chested it past Albiol and beat Casillas.

Five minutes from the break Ramos' cross fell into the path of Gonzalo Higuain but the Argentina striker blasted a great chance into the stands.

As the two Spanish giants trudged off at half time the visitors knew it was far from over. In each of their last three home games Madrid trailed before going on to win and this season they had 15 home wins out of 15. However this was not their night. Their first shot on target came after 51 minutes. Marcello's drive went straight to Victor Valdes.

It was a testament of Barca's strength that Real Madrid players just could not win the ball off them for the first 15 minutes of the second half. From the 53rd minute till the 56th minute in particular Barca kept taunting Madrid like a bull-fighter in full flow. The Catalans danced around the dazed and confused Real.

Ronaldo & Co could only look at the ball as it kept going from Xavi to Messi to Pedro to Keita to Messi to Xavi. It was fantastic to watch and proved beyond doubt that this Barcelona side looked so superior to Madrid. Eventually the home side did get the ball but Ronaldo's shot was tame and straight at Valdes.

At the 54th minute, Madrid hit the canvas once again as Xavi released Pedro on the back of Arbeloa and the youngster slotted past Casillas. The game looked sealed in favour of Barca as they had the insurance goal that they were looking for.

Madrid boss Manuel Pellegrini took Marcello off and brought on veteran playmaker Guti. He had an instant impact as he set up Higuain but he fired wide of Valdes on the 57th minute mark and a minute later, Van der Vaart after receiving a gem of a pass from Guti and with Valdes to beat took a feeble try which the goalkeeper parried. On such moments titles are decided and this will in all likelihood prove the costliest miss of them all.

Ronaldo next ran down the left after 68 minutes but he shot straight at Valdes from a difficult angle. Moments later Valdes produced another stop from Guti as Madrid threw everything in a desperate search for a goal.

Messi raced clear on 70 minutes but Casillas' wonder-save kept the score line respectable for Madrid as he parried the ball for a corner kick which proved abortive.

From then on Barcelona took the sting out of the game and at the end they staged an impromptu song and dance in the centre circle to celebrate a historic triumph. Barca have taken a massive step towards retaining their league title with a 0-2 win over Madrid at the Bernabeu.

The Catalans may not have been that fluent as last season’s 2-6 demolition, but their efficiency in front of goal, inflicted the first home defeat of the season on Madrid and ensured the three points that put them in the driving seat for another league title, with a three point lead and just 7 games left to be played.

Guardiola looked the more enterprising of the two coaches, to create an element of surprise he started off with Dani Alves as a winger and Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Milito and Maxwell as the back-four, but at half-time he pulled the Brazilian back into the right back spot, switching Puyol to the left and pushing Maxwell forward on the left. The new line up left Pedro free to roam the right side of the attack and Xavi Hernandez took full advantage, rounding off a collective move to set the young Spanish winger free with a brilliant pass on 54 minutes, which he fired past Casillas to make it two.

FC Barcelona:– Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol, Maxwell (Iniesta 63’), Gerard Pique, Gabriel Milito (Marquez 78’), Sergio B, Daniel Alves, Xavier Hernandez, Pedro, Lionel Messi, Keita

Real Madrid :– Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Albiol, Garay, Arbeloa, Xavi Alonso, Gago, Marcelo (Guti 57’), Van der Vaart (Raul 68’), Cristiano Ronaldo, Higuain (Benzema 79’)

Salgaocar hold Mohun Bagan, Barreto missed Penalty

A heroic performance by Edeh Chidi goes in vain as his teammate Barreto missed penalty at a crucial time which lead Mohun Bagan to end up with 1-1 draw against Salgaocar today at Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata. Barreto missed a golden opportunity on the 84th min of the match which ultimately shattered the fate of Bagan in their I-league campaign against Salgaocar. At the end it was just another frustrating draw for the National club of the Country.

The match started on a hot evening where the temperature reading 41 degree centigrade and that was quite stressful for both the teams. It was the first match of Biswajit Bhattacharyya and that too against Karim Bencherifa as the salgaocar coach. Biswajit started with Manju and Masih at defence while Micky Fernandes was leading midfield and Barreto and Chidi were in charge of the attack.

On 6th min of the match Bagan got another opportunity as Salgaocar skipper Luciano Sabrosa illegally tried to stop Bagan's Marcos and got yellow card which gave Bagan a free kick. Here too Barreto made the miss and another opportunity went in vain. Luck was not at Bagan's side as on 10th min chidi missed the header coming through a beautiful free kick by Marcos in the first half.

Bagan continued attacking opposition's goal but fate prohibited them from scoring even a single goal. In 44th min Chidi got a real opportunity as Salgaocar clearance was headed towards their goal and Chidi received it at the edge of the box. Then again on 45th minute Chidi tried to make a header from a corner of Masih but he missed the opportunity.First half ended with goalless scoreline.

On the second half salgaocar got an real opportunity as Beevan got the ball at Bagan's penalty area and crossed it towards Francis, but Masih blocked it beautifully though cjetan got it rebound but sailed over from 25 yards distance. But the breakthrough finally came in 62nd min as Marcos curved a corner kick and unmarked Chidi converted the golden opportunity into goal.

After this Mohun Bagan created some opportunity but none of them were executed in right way. on 67th min salgaocar's Ekane came as a substitute of Beevan. After that salgaocar started attacking more frequently which ultimately brought the equalizer for them. On 76th min keita got a long ball pierced through Bagan's defence and he made no mistake to level the score board by 1-1.

But the real turning point of the match came at 84th min as Bagan got a penalty which could have sealed the game in their favour. But Barreto made a total miss and only found Man of the Match Kalyan Choubey's gloves to save the goal. This horrible miss of Barreto who failed to convert the penalty second time within one month shattered the dream of Bagan's supporters and finally the match ended with a dull 1-1 scoreline.
