Today with the kick off the visitors started to dominate the game and as early as in the 10th minute of the match Tuboi scored the opening goal for Lajong. 10 minutes later Okoye scored another goal and increased the lead further. There after Bagan tried something to return back to the match. After losing couple of opportunities ultimately in the 38th minute Bagan reduced the margin with the help of a goal scored by Surkumar Singh through a fine header from a corner of Snehashis Chakraborty.

Everyone expected that in the second half Bagan would definitely fight back but in reality the opposite thing happened and Bagan was completely overrun by Lajong in the second half. In the second half Bagan hardly got one or two good opportunities and one of them came in the 75th minute but on that occasion Bareto’s header went outside.

But the last drama came in the closing minutes of the match as in the 92nd and 94th minutes Gatpoh and Anil Gurung scored two final goals and thus confirmed a 4-1 win over Mohun Bagan as well as also came to a better position in the league table to avoid the relegation.

In fact the 3rd goal of Lajong F.C scored by Gatpoh was a world class goal. He dribbled more than four Mohun bagan defender including Keeper Sangram Mumkherjee on the way to his score. The style of his goal as like as Shyam Thapa, who scored a goal in the year 1975 IFA League match while he was playing for East Bengal against Mohun Bagan at Eden Garden.

Interview: Shillong Lajong FC Keeper Gumpe Rime

Gumpe Rime, the custodian of Shillong Lajong FC, Meghalaya has come to Kolkata to play for his team against Mohun Bagan in the I-League encounter at YBK on 27.03.2010. Gumpe had a talk with kolkatafootball.com volunteer correspondent Prasanta Gupta.

KFC : Welcome to Kolkata. It is very hot and humid here. The match will start at 4.30 PM tomorrow. Do you feel, you would have played much better, if the match starts at the evening.

Gumpe Rime : I would not say we could play much better but of course there will be heat factor to some extent as we are coming from a relatively much colder place than Kolkata.

KFC : - Which result do you expect tomorrow against Mohun Bagan? Will you be happy with a draw? Or will go all-out for valuable 3 points. Have Lajong any problem regarding yellow/red card/or due to injury?

Gumpe Rime :Any team playing away would be happy not to lose but if you can collect 3 points it will definitely be a bonus. As of now all are fine with Lajong regarding cards, injuries etc.

KFC : Lajong FC have appeared in the Indian Football scenario this year and in the very first year you have become runners-up in the Fed. Cup. Theoritically you are the second best-team of India. You also became the runners-up of the E.K.Nayanar Trophy. But in I-League, your performances have fallen quite a bit. Now you are at the 13th spot amongst 14 teams in the I-league. What are the main reasons of the fall of Ljong?

Gumpe Rime :You are right, so far it has been an amazing run for us as we have done quite well in all the tournaments we played and when it comes to I-League, I won’t say it’s a fall but inconsistency has been the main reason as most of the boys are very young and are not used to the longer version of the competition.

KFC :When should we expect to see Lajong FC as one of the top teams of India?

Gumpe Rime :Our main aim is to survive in the top tier of the Indian football this year and I can assure the day is not far when Lajong will be among the the top clubs of the country.

KFC :The teams of Kolkata have not been able to cope up with the other top teams in India during last few years. Though East Bengal are Mohun Bagan are regularly winning Fed. Cup, they are unable to exhibit good show in the other national tournaments. What are the reasons behind it?

Gumpe Rime :If you go by the history then definitely there is a concern about their performance in the recent times but don’t forget football is coming up in other states as well, earlier all the good players used to come to Kolkata only and it used to be Kolkata teams all the way in almost all the tournaments, but now with other teams pumping more money many good players are shifting base other than Kolkata.

KFC : What are your future plannings? Do you have any contemplation of becoming a coach after quitting football?

Gumpe Rime :As of now I have not decided anything yet, I am still enjoying my football.

KFC : How do you feel Kolkata as a city? What are you favourite places of Kolkata? What are your likings and dislikings about this city?

Gumpe Rime :Kolkata, it’s a nice place, I love to go out shopping here as it is one the cheapest places in India and I enjoy Bengali food like Macher jol and Lau chingdi. It’s really bad when it comes to weather, the humidity is too high and it’s too crowded as well.

Kolkatafootabll.com wishes him all the best in his future football career and personal life. Thank you Gumpe get ahead.

Indian Forward Sunil Chhetri Agrees to Terms with the Kansas City Wizards (MLS)

Press Release: The Kansas City Wizards announced today that Indian forward Sunil Chhetri has agreed in principal to terms with Major League soccer, pending his P-1 Visa and ITC approval. Chhetri will be unavailable to play in the Kansas City Wizards opener versus D.C. United at home on Saturday.

"One thing we really like about Sunil is that he's a crafty player," Wizards Manager Peter Vermes said. "Technically he's very sharp, and he's a guy that has good attacking tendencies."

Currently one of India’s best and most recognizable players, Chhetri began his professional career in 2002 with Indian side Mohun Bagan, scoring eight goals in 18 appearances over three years with the team. Chhetri continued his time in India with JCT FC, Kingfisher East Bengal FC and Dempo SC, making 75 appearances and scoring 35 goals over the next five years, earning Indian Player of the Year honors from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in 2007. In 2009, Chhetri won two awards, India Player of the Year and the Fans Player of the Year.

During this time, Chhetri drew interest from British clubs Leeds United and Glasgow Celtic and trialed with Coventry City and Queen’s Park Rangers of the Coca-Cola Championship in England. Chhetri was offered a contract by QPR, but could not complete his move after the English Home Office denied him a work permit due to India’s place in the most recent FIFA World Rankings.

Chhetri has been a regular with the Indian national team since 2004, scoring 16 goals in 35 appearances for his country. His most famous moment with the team came in 2008, when he scored a hat-trick in the final of the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup against Tajikistan. Because of India’s victory in that tournament, the team will compete in the 2011 edition of the Asian Cup, a tournament for which the team had not qualified since 1984.

Today, Chhetri is widely considered to be the successor to Baichung Bhutia as the “face” of Indian soccer. Bhutia, India’s record-holder in caps and goals, is one of only two other Indian players to have played abroad after joining Bury F.C. in England for three seasons from 1999 to 2002. Mohamed Salim had a successful stint with Celtic in the pre-Independent India.

“I am very happy and optimistic,” Chhetri said about playing for the Wizards. “I'm looking forward to getting to know my teammates and the city of Kansas City, and I am going to come to training and give my best everyday.”

With the signing, Chhetri becomes the eighth citizen of an Asian country and the first Indian to play in MLS. He will also be the first Asian citizen to play for the Kansas City Wizards and the second Indian soccer player ever to ply his trade outside of his home nation. Currently Major League Soccer has representatives from over 55 different countries playing for the 16 clubs.

Chhetri will become the third Indian-born professional athlete currently in American professional team sports, with Pittsburgh Pirates minor-league pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel being the other two. NFL Linebacker Brandon Chillar of the Green Bay Packers and former NFL wide receiver Sanjay Beach are both of Indian descent as well.

Chhetri arrived in Kansas City on Tuesday night and will join the team for training later in the week.

Mohun Bagan will Take On Shillong Lajong tomorrow at Home.

Tomorrow in a vital I-league encounter Mohun Bagan will face Shillong Lajong in their home ground. Tomorrow’s match will be very much vital as Bagan will definitely go for full three points from the home match to remain in th e championship run while a win can take Lajong much more safe position to avoid relegation.Bagan will not get the service of Rakesh Masih and Branco tomorrow.

In last few match both in home and away Mohun Bagan faced close defeats which put them few step down in the league table. New Coach Satyajit Chatterjee is eager for a win to get back his team on championship track. In their last home match Bagan faced a surprise defeat against the bottom team of I-League table-Sporting Club de Goa with 1-2 scoreline. So tomorrow Bagan will surely not consider any point loss against Lajong and most of all they will have the home advantage and the home side also have the entire compact team. So Bagan will definitely allow even a inch of land to Lajong without tough fight.

On the other side after becoming Runners up both in Federation Cup and E.K. Nayanar Gold Cup Shillong Lajong are doing better results in the I-League. But still they are now under the threat of relegation. So a win in the away game will definitely put them in some relief position. Again though Bagan lost their last home match against the bottom team of the League table so the boys of Stanley Rosario will definitely try to repeat the action. The main strengths of the team are its speed and youthfulness. But the main problems are lack of experience and poor finishing. But anyhow they will also never allow a very easy game to the Green and Maroon brigade.

In their last I-League encounter in Shillong being 0-1 down in a situation Mohun Bagan overpowered Lajong with 2-1 scoreline in an exciting away game. So tomorrow in front of the home crowed Bagan will definitely have the advantage but there is no doubt that Lajong is capable of making impossible possible in any stage of any game. So everyone can expect to have a very exciting game tomorrow.
