Mahindra United sign off on a winning note, beat JCT 2-1 in their concluding fixture.

Mahindra United, one of the premier football clubs in the country bid farewell to Indian football on a bright note as they chalked out a hard-fought victory in their concluding fixture of the I-League played at the Cooperage ground here on Thursday. Determined to round off their campaign on a high while playing in front of their home crowd for the final time, Mahindra United who needed to win and keep their second place hopes alive attained the maximum three points by getting the better of mid-table team JCT by a 2-1 margin.

This 26th round fixture, where overall the quality of finishing was hardly up to the mark, Mahindra United who had performed extremely well in the first phase and early part of the second leg, held off a determined second half challenge from the Punjab outfit to come through and put an end to their recent run of poor results. In their quest of gaining the second position, Mahindra United though did their part of winning their final match, however, now have to contend with either third or fourth spot following the result of another final round match in Goa held today where Pune FC (42 points) shared points with already crowned champions Dempo by playing out a 1-1 draw.

Turning out for their final game, Mahindra United who had played out a goalless draw with JCT in the first leg, enjoyed a two nil lead at half-time with goals from central midfielder Sukhwinder Singh and winger Paresh Shivalkar while N.P. Pradeep, who wore the captains armband was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his fairly solid work in the heart of the defence.

Meanwhile, JCT who have struggled on their travels, generally looked good with their approach play from the wider areas but lacked the end product, reduced the margin very early in the second half through Henry Ezeh from a set-piece situation. Mahindra United, who earlier were in contention for the honors before losing their way at a critical stage in the title race, with the help of this victory have currently moved into the third position with 41 points but can slip into the fourth place if last years winners Churchill Brothers (40 points) defeat relegation-threatened Air India on Friday.

Unable to muster a win in their last three games, if Churchill ended up dropping points against the airmen then Mahindra United would claim the third place as they have a better goal difference than the Goan outfit. A win for Churchill will see them finish as runners-up in the 14-team league, which culminates tomorrow.

Mohun Bagan and Chirag Letter to IFA regarding CFL match against Chirag United

Dear Sir, We would like to draw your kind attention to the fiasco which occurred yesterday at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan during the 2nd half of the Sahara Calcutta Football Premier Division League match played between McDowell Mohun Bagan and Chirag United SC. The manner in which Referee Minangshu Bhattacharya was insulted, taunted and manhandled openly in front of the spectators, team officials, match officials and IFA Officials (including your goodself) was shameless and deplorable. We take this opportunity to condemn this unsporting behaviour.

At the same time, we urge IFA to take strong and severe disciplinary action against the players involved. Just a few minutes earlier a goal scored by our Team was disallowed by the Referee but our players accepted and respected this wrong decision sportingly. Many reporters and ex-players have mentioned that this goal was a genuine one.

This incident has been highlighted by all the print and electronic media and has received media attention for all the wrong reasons thereby tarnishing the image of the Calcutta Football League, IFA and other stakeholders. (Newspaper cuttings enclosed for your ready reference).

A similar incident had occurred on 27th February 2010 in a CFL match of this year’s League itself at the same venue between Kingfisher East Bengal and Mohammedan SC when the players of both teams got involved in a free-for-all at the fag end of the match and Referee Biplab Poddar gave marching orders to four players (two players from either team). IFA had taken a tough stand and had initiated appropriate disciplinary action against the offenders. However it seems that mere suspension for a few matches or monetary fine is not enough since similar incident has recurred within a gap of three months.

So, without intending to interfere in your jurisdiction, it is our earnest suggestion for the sake of Football that long-term suspension/ban is considered and onus must also be on the clubs to control their players. Please note that if players of Chirag United SC are not suitably punished for similar type of offence committed by players of Kingfisher East Bengal and Mohammedan SC in the same tournament; IFA would be guilty of both negligence as well as partiality.

We request you to take up this matter on a priority basis and give exemplary punishment to the offenders of yesterday’s match which will act as a deterrent and help preserve the spirit of the game.

Another incident that needs to be mentioned is the floodlight failure in the second half of this match which led to suspension of play by almost half an hour. In this context please note that we had requested IFA to prepone the kickoff time of this match by an hour (from 5 pm to 4 pm) to enable our player Chidi Edeh to board the flight to Lagos via Mumbai since his pregnant wife is critically ill and hospitalized in Lagos (letter dated 24th May 2010 from McDowell Mohun Bagan to IFA enclosed). In the Managers’ Meeting, it was decided and duly documented that kickoff would be at 4:30 pm (document enclosed for your easy reference). However after the meeting, it was notified to us that kickoff would be at 5 pm. This is strict violation of the rules and was done with a vicious motive so that our star striker Chidi would not be able to play full 90 minutes and at the same time he would be looking more at his watch than the opponent’s goal.

We feel that there is a sinister ploy behind the floodlight failure incident. Ultimately Chidi had to be replaced before the match ended, even though he was fit and in good form to play. CAB had appointed an independent committee of experts to find out the facts when floodlights went out at Eden Gardens a few months back during an IPL Twenty-Twenty match. We therefore request you to constitute a similar independent committee of experts, having no member from IFA, Clubs or YBK Stadium, to investigate into yesterday’s occurrence and thereafter to take strong exemplary action against those involved as a preventive measure.

Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
Anjan Kumar Mitra
Hony. General Secretary
McDowell Mohun Bagan

On the other hand Chirag United also sent a letter to IFA today demanding the replay of the said match. In the letter they wanted to make proof that the referee's decision of penalty was wrong. In this regards they also sent the Video footages of the match to IFA .

But IFA Secretary Mr. Utpal Ganguly told that there is no question of replay match because there is no rules of Replay match in IFA constituency. Report of Referee and match commissioner is final . IFA will take the final decision regarding it of friday in IFA league sub - committee meeting where discussion will be held regarding two teams letters, Referee and Match commissioner's report , Video footage of match etc.

Final Round : I-League Preview of Mahindra United vs JCT

Mahindra United, one of the country’s leading football club, which will be disbanded at the end of this season, in their quest to keep alive their hopes of finishing second, are determined to end their campaign on a high when they battle it out at home against mid-table team JCT in their concluding fixture of the I-League to be played at the Cooperage ground on Thursday.

Performing extremely well during the first leg and early part of the second leg, while remaining in contention for the honors, Mahindra United who faltered in the title challenge at a critical stage of the league would seek to restore their pride by finishing on a winning note against the Punjab outfit in this 26th round fixture.

Quite surprised by the sudden dip in form of his team, who had opportunities to consolidate their position at the top before losing their way in the title race, Mahindra United coach David Booth said, “I am surprised when you consider that the same group of players lost just one game in 20 then only draw one of the next five, then you have to question the commitment of the players despite whatever decision has been made by the Mahindra company.”

Keen to put on a good show in front of their home fans for the final time, Mahindra United (38 points) whose form has been poor in their recent matches, need to deliver a solid team performance in this return leg clash and secure maximum three points to stand any chance of earning the second place provided results of other matches in the final round also go their way.

“This is our last chance to regain a little credibility and respect before we all move on. During the last several weeks, ninety five percent of the players have received contracts elsewhere, so there is no excuse for the lack of performance in recent games. The performance by the players over the last few games has made me question how much desire the players have to win in these circumstances where whatever has happened, as a coach, the competitiveness inside one self never wavers and I have been hoping and looking to win every game,” added Booth.

To gain the runners-up spot, Mahindra United need to beat JCT and hope that already crowned champions Dempo playing at home tomorrow defeat Pune FC who are currently placed second in the league table with 41 points and third place Churchill Brothers (40 points) drop points against relegation-threatened Air India on Friday.

For the record, both Mahindra United and Pune FC have the same goal difference (+15) going into their last round of matches while the jeepmen enjoy a better goal difference as compared to Churchill, who have dropped points in their last three matches. Eyeing to finish higher in the league table, currently placed fourth--Mahindra United, who had shared points with JCT in the first leg by playing out a goalless draw, will miss the services of their Senegalese centre-back Lamine Tamba, who is out with a double booking.

Being impressive at home, JCT (32 points) made a decent start to their campaign in the second leg, where they have recorded five wins and moved themselves into safety zone. However, they have clearly struggled on their travels, losing four of their six away matches in the second phase, which includes a heavy defeat at the hands of last year’s winners Churchill Brothers.
