CHARLES D' SOUZA : ASD Cape Town, the South African football Academy, is looking to set up a branch in Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, it has been revealed. Officials of the Academy are due to visit India to explore the possibility of setting up an Academy in Mumbai similar to the one they are running in Cape Town.

"The progress these boys have made has been phenomenal and as a result we are looking to visit Mumbai later next month to carry out a feasibility study on the potential of replicating our Cape Town operation in Mumbai. Obviously, this is unchartered territory for us as we have no previous business experience in India but we have identified huge potential in football ability. We would welcome a suitable business partner with a similar vision of improving the standard of Indian Football," said CEO Mike Steptoe of ASD.

Currently the academy is home to four Indian boys, three of them been Goans. Benaulim-born Brandon Fernandes was the first Indian player to make his mark with ASD. The other Goans at the academy are 17-year-old Myron Mendes and Aldrick Coelho. Amarjit Singh completes the Indian quartet at academy in South Africa. Mendes who has captained India at U17 level is proving to be a revelation and his versatility in defence or midfield promises an exciting future, sources at ASD said.

ASD Cape Town are delighted with the progress of their Indian players. "We took a gamble in bringing Brandon Fernandes down from Goa in 2011 but the gamble is paying off. Brandon has matured into a very talented player with exceptional technical skills and although still only 18 we expect him to move up to Europe within the next few months," Steptoe said.

"Brandon also should be on the Indian national team radar as he is a very special talent and already capable of playing at that level," he added. Additionally, former U17 International Singh is showing great form as an attacking mid fielder, and baby of the squad 15 year old striker Coelho from Goa is also making fantastic progress.

In recent times there has been a surge of reputed foreign clubs setting up their football schools in India. Boca Juniors, the famed Argentinean club, has started their operations in Bangalore. Other top clubs which operate schools in India are the Manchester United Football School in Maharashtra, Arsenal soccer Schools India and FC Barcelona with the Heritage school in Delhi.
