34TH FOOTBALL LOVERS DAY

The 16th of August 1980 was the saddest day in the history of Indian football. In a derby encounter between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan 16 football lovers had to sacrifice their life at Eden Gardens. To respect the departed souls of the 16 football lovers Indian Football Association (West Bengal) and Voluntary Blood Donors Association observe Football Lovers Day on the 16th of August.

Alike every year (starting from 16th August 1981) this year also, there will be a blood donation camp at Netaji Indoor stadium from 9 am which will continue till 6 pm in the evening. Significantly, the football lovers of various disrtict towns of West Bengal will have the chance to donate blood as different organizations of Bardhaman, Chittaranjan, Darjeeling, Ghatal, Taki, Kulti, Siliguri and Purulia have arrange for similar camps.

In this year 25 prisioners from different jails of Kolkata will donate their blood. These prisioners participated in various football matches organised by the Police Departments . Each blood donor will be presented a certificate autographed by Ex- India International footballer and Editor of IFA published Bengali Monthly Football Magazine " KICK-OFF" - Manash Bhattacharjya who was in the team list of Mohun Bagan in the ill fated match.

In the year 16th August 2013 : 704 Football Fan donated blood at Kolkata while 504 donated in various Districts and Sub division of Bengal.
