FED CUP PREVIEW : Bengaluru FC ready for Sporting challenge.

BFC press release : Westwood Not Taking Anything For Granted On Eve Of Fed Cup Opener. Bengaluru FC will look get their maiden Federation Cup campaign off to a happy start when they go to battle with Sporting Clube de Goa at the Manjeri District Sports Complex, in Malappuram, on Wednesday. Ashley Westwood's boys have been drawn in Group B -dubbed the 'group of death'- alongside Cup holders East Bengal, Sporting Clube de Goa and Rangdajied United.

The two teams have played each other just once in a goalless draw at the Bangalore Football Stadium but have had a constant eye on each other given their positions on the League table. While Bengaluru FC are in pole position, the Oscar Bruzon-coached Sporting are only three points adrift.

However, Westwood isn't dwelling much on what the table says. 'Like I've said before, there are so many teams who have reshuffled their squads and everyone has the 'unknown' element to them so we aren't taking positions in the League as an indicator of what we might expect," said the Englishman on the eve of the game.

In skipper Sunil Chhetri, Bengaluru have the League's highest scorer while strike partner Sean Rooney too has been among the goals. Sporting have marksmen of their own in striker Boimah Karpeh (7) and midfielder Ogba Kalu (7) and it will be interesting to how the defence of both teams turn up.

While Bengaluru FC are being touted as favourites for the tournament, Westwood begs to differ. "We are looking forward to this game and our preparation has been good. This is a completely different competition from the I-League and we will be trying our best to match the standards that have brought us success in recent months."

FED CUP PREVIEW -Slillong Lajong to face Salgaocar.

14.01.2014 : KFC. | www.kolkatafootball.com HOME PAGE

slfc press release : Shillong Lajong FC will begin their Federation Cup campaign against Salgoacar FC in Cochin in their first Group C match on 15th January, 2013 at 4:00 PM IST. The match will be telecast live on Ten Action. Shillong Lajong FC are placed in a tough group alongside 13 time winners Mohun Bagan, Goan side Salgoacar FC who have lifted the cup 4 times and Mumbai FC.

Shillong Lajong will go into the game tomorrow without the services of Uilliams Souza Silva who was held back in Shillong after being declared unfit by Lajong's medical team. Another startling factor for the Reds is the inclusion of 7 players from the club's youth academy with most of them having already made appearances in the I-League.

Coach Thangboi Singto commented on tomorrow's big game and said, "It will be a tough match after the I-League break and Salgaocar is a very good team. We hope to do well and give our best performance." He also said, "Salgoacar has a very good coach who is also a good human being and they have experienced players with a combination of youth also. It will definitely be a highly competitive game."

Thangboi Singto's men will look to carry their performance from the I-League into the Fed Cup. The Reds are placed fourth in the league just seven points off leaders Bengaluru FC and will look to repeat their heroics from the 2009-10 season as well when they beat the likes of Dempo SC and Churchill Brothers SC to reach the finals. They ended the tournament as runners up that year after losing out to 8 time winners East Bengal on penalties but will look to go one better in this edition of the Federation Cup with a much better confident squad and a resilient coach in Thangboi Singto.

Salgoacar FC on the other hand are low on confidence given their poor run of form in the I-League recently. After having topped the table early in the season, the Goan side plunged to 5th position after going without a win in seven consecutive games. Derrick Perreira's men will only prove football pundits wrong with a good performance in the Federation Cup even with countless factors going against them. Their star striker, Scotsman Daryll Duffy has not been in the best goal-scoring form in the I-League but might just revive his scoring touch in this tournament.

Both sides will be looking for a perfect start to the tournament with a win and establish themselves as contenders to qualify for the semi finals and put much added pressure on Mohun Bagan and Mumbai FC who will be playing against each other on the same day at 7:00 PM IST.
