Mumbai City FC went down 0-3 to table toppers Chennaiyin FC in the inaugural Hero Indian Super League at the D.Y. Patil Stadium here on Sunday evening. Bruno Pelissari (71st), Dhanchandra Singh (81st) and Christian Hidalgo (89th) scored the goals for the visitors who extended their lead at the top by three points over Atletico de Kolkata.

The hosts went into the match high on confidence, having maintained a clean slate in their last five games and it showed in their performance in the first half. The opening 45 minutes of the match was a battle of attrition with both teams not willing to take many risks at the start and were content to play within themselves thereafter.

While the visitors had the better possession in the opening half, the two best chances before the break fell to Mumbai City FC. Jan Stohanzl was a tad late to arrive in the box to connect a cross in the fifth minute and the ball went wide after hitting him.

"I think its right to say that we made two big errors for the first two goals," Mumbai City FC coach Peter Reid admitted after the game. "I don't think injury to key players was the main issue. Even Chennai missed a few players. I just think we didn’t have enough quality out there on the night," he added.

The second time Mumbai City FC came close to scoring was when Bernand Mendy lost the ball near his box. But Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano parried Andre Moritz's shot and Tiago Ribiero, who replaced Nicolas Anelka in the starting XI, ended up shooting wide on the rebound.

Mumbai City FC came close to scoring several times in the second half before a mistake at the back gave Pelissari a chance break the deadlock with a right footer. With Mumbai City FC chasing the game, Chennaiyin’s got more chances on the counter and were able to extend their lead thanks to a couple more mistakes at the back.

"When you are struggling to score goals, it's important that you don't make silly errors at the back. It's not pleasant, but we can't change that now. We just got to get ready for Delhi now," Reid said.

22.11.2014: MATCH PREVIEW - MCFC PRESS RELEASE : Confident Mumbai City FC ready for table toppers Chennaiyin FC

Mumbai City FC would look to return the favours in their own den when they take on Chennaiyin FC in the tenth round of the Hero Indian Super League here on Sunday evening.

The team, co-owned by Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor and Chartered Accountant Bimal Parekh, suffered a 1-5 reversal when they visited the Tamil Nadu capital at the start of the league. But much water has flown through the Arabian Sea since then.

Since the loss in Chennai, Mumbai City FC has maintained five straight clean sheets and have managed to carve out two fighting victories. However, with the semi-final spot on the line, coach Peter Reid and his boys know that only three points against the visitors would ease the pressure on them in their penultimate home game of the season.

With five rounds remaining in the league stage, Mumbai City FC has 12 points in their kitty and their primary aim would be to clinch six points from the remaining two home games, including the one on Sunday. But to achieve that goal, the team needs to start finding the back of the opposition net at the earliest against a Chennaiyin FC team that boasts of one of the best goal difference in the competition.

In their last three encounters which all ended in 0-0 stalemates, Mumbai City FC produced a plethora of chances but either could not convert them into goals or were plain unlucky as strikes were blocked by the woodwork.

The return of Andre Moritz has already added some bite to Mumbai City FC's attack as was evident in their last game against FC Goa and manager Reid would have little to complain about the efforts and linking up of Moritz with the other attacking players.

The Englishman would only be hoping that the likes of Moritz, who has the only hat-trick in the tournament to his name, and Anelka find that elusive goal sooner than later and the Indian support cast of Subhash Singh, Nadong Bhutia and Lalrindika Ralte come to the party against the Chennaiyins.

"We are training today. The decision (on fitness and squad) would be made tonight. It depends on training and the treatment tonight, because we give every player as much a chance as we can to get fit. We don't just sit there and defend all the time. Especially after the last game against Chennai, it was such a big defeat, it affects everyone in the team mentally.

So it's important to work on that stable back four. We don't say we will go out there and draw nil-nil, because you can't do that. In reality, when you get the ball, you try and score a goal. We have missed some opportunities, even in the last game. The league is wide open, with possibly seven teams who can make it to top four. Our aim is to not lose, but we got to start picking a couple of wins on our way," Mumbai City FC assistant coach Steve Darby said on the eve of the game.

23.11.2014 - CFC PRESS RELEASE : Post-match press conference of Chennaiyin FC player-manager Marco Materazzi and defender Dhanachandra Singh.

Marco Materazzi
(On the emphatic away win) ---- I am very happy with the three points. In the first half we were quiet but in the second half we created and converted our chances. It is a great win but we are not in the semi-finals just yet and maybe will need five or six points more.

(On winning without Elano and Mendoza ) ----: I have always said that here I have a team and not individuals. Maybe we played better without Elano and Mendoza but the most important thing is that even the players who don't play regularly are showing the hunger and desire to perform like Cristian today. He scored a great freekick after coming on. I am thankful to have Bruno as well in good form. But it's the whole squad in truth that is performing.

( On needing Elano back) ---: Elano has gone to Brazil now for rest and treatment. I want him to be back in the best shape possible. The same form which he had been showing before the injury.

Dhanachandra Singh

(On scoring his first ISL goal) --- It feels great to get my first ISL goal in front of such a big crowd and in such an important game. This will give me confidence to contribute even more both while going forwarding and defending.

(On if he had a feeling if he would score) --- We were attacking a lot especially in the second half so I was getting forward more and more. There was a bit of luck involved in my goal but I am happy.

Marco Materazzi
(On the injuries) : Elano, Mendoza and Gouramangi are definitely ruled out of tomorrow's game. But only God knows for how long they will be out for.

(On other players stepping up) : We will miss the injured trio but the other players in the squad deserve respect as they have stepped up in the past and ready to deliver again if needed. As I said after the last game, we may or may not reach the semis but we are a team.

(On Mumbai City not conceding since letting in five against Chennai) : We know Mumbai are a very good side, in fact I said earlier that they have the best team in the ISL. But we are not the worst so we will give them a good game again.

Jayesh Rane

(On Mumbai City FC) : They are a very good side so we will give them respect but at the same time try to maintain our good position in the table.

(On being from Mumbai and playing in Mumbai) : Yes, it's great to be playing in Mumbai and I am expecting a great atmosphere tomorrow but all I want is three points for Chennaiyin FC.
