ISL MATCH SCORE 2016
ISL PRESS RELEASE: Brazilian winger Marcelo Pereira was the cynosure of all eyes as he struck a brace in Delhi Dynamos 3-1 win over defending champions Chennaiyin FC at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday.

Playing their first match this season, Delhi Dynamos turned on the magic with Marcelo, better known as Marcelinho, scoring two goals for his side in the first session after Dudu Omagbemi had briefly cancelled his 26th minute goal. Badara Badji put the match beyond Chennaiyin FC’s reach with the third goal in the 86th minute.

Chennaiyin FC are without a win from their first two matches after drawing the opening match against Atletico de Kolkata. Playing at home for the first time, the defending champions started with a flurry but could not break the deadlock. In the eighth minute, Raphael Augusto spotted Mohanraj’s run from the left who crossed for Dudu but the Nigerian striker’s header sailed just wide.

Bernard Mendy then went close in the next minute with another header and Jeje Lalpekhlua had his chance to draw first blood but could not beat Delhi goalkeeper Toni Doblas from close range. Delhi soon recovered from the initial Chennaiyin FC push and moved ahead in the 26th minute after Milan Singh won a penalty. Milan spotted a long cross from Souvik Chakraborty and was making his run when he was brought down by Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr. Marcelinho stepped up to take the penalty and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Chennaiyin FC, however, did not take too long to draw level. Dudu was afforded space by the Delhi defence and he made them pay by latching on to a through ball from Jeje and slamming it past a diving Delhi goalkeeper in the 32nd minute.

Chennaiyin FC were now back in the game but Delhi took they by surprise again two minutes later as Marcelinho hoodwinked the rival defence and gave Kerr no chance with a first-time attempt.

Had Delhi converted the chances that came their way after being 2-1 ahead, the match would have been killed at the half-time whistle itself. Kean Lewis missed a golden chance with only the goalkeeper at his mercy as he shot wide and then Marcelinho took one touch too many, allowing Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper to grab the ball and keep his team in the hunt.

In the second session, Delhi Dynamos were comfortable with the ball and rarely looked threatened. Chennaiyin FC, on the other hand, tried to find a way past the rival defence without much success. Sensing that he needs to do something different, manager Marco Materazzi opted to field three strikers for the last 20 minutes of play but instead it were Delhi Dynamos who tasted success.

Delhi made it 3-1 with six minutes left on the clock when a Kean Lewis cross from the left was finished with a thumping header by substitute Badara Badji.

ISL Press Release : Marco Materazzi happily welcomed his World Cup winning Italian teammate Gianluca Zambrotta to the Hero Indian Super League but will make it as uncomfortable as possible for the Delhi Dynamos coach in their opening round battle against Chennaiyin FC at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday.

Materazzi and Zambrotta won the 2006 World Cup for Italy. While Materazzi has been in India for the last two years with Chennaiyin FC, Zambrotta is only making his debut in the Hero ISL after taking over Delhi Dynamos from Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos.

“I know him as a player and not as a coach. I am happy to see him here in India because this is a great chance for him to grow as manager and I wish the best for him,” Materazzi said during his pre-match interaction with the media.

Chennaiyin FC had to settle for a point against Atletico de Kolkata after conceding a late penalty in their first round encounter and as they return home will be keen to log full points.

“I think we have to divide between pressure and obsession. We don’t have any pressure to win or obsession to become champions because we have already won the tournament last year. It’s a pleasure to defend the title and we will do that until the last match. I am not putting any pressure on the players,” said Materazzi.

Conceding penalties has been Chennaiyin’s bane since the start of the Hero ISL and Materazzi said this was part of a learning process, particularly for the younger players in the team.

“I have to agree with the referee that it was actually a penalty and it happened due to inexperience. When you are 18 (years old), you tend to make these mistakes; if not only 30 year or older players will play. You have to learn from these mistake and be cautious in the penalty area,” said the Chennaiyin FC manager who guided his team to the title last season.

Just like Chennaiyin FC, Delhi Dynamos too will base their game on a strong defensive structure. The visitors. however, will miss the services of two important players from last season, John Arne Riise and Hans Mulder, both now playing for Chennaiyin FC.

“I am very happy with the pre-season. We had a good pre-season and am more than happy with it, but the championship starts tomorrow. We will see tomorrow if we have done a good job. We hope to do a good job,” said the Italian.

“For me, it’s important that the team remains compact when we attack as well as when we defend but more importantly it’s important to have the winning mentality. I have come here to win something,” said Zambrotta.

ATLETICO TO FACE KERALA BLASTERS AT KOCHI
PREVIEW - 04.10.16 : Atletico De Kolkata will going to play the first away match against Kerala Blasters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Wednesday. Atletico De Kolkata shared points with Chenniyian FC in the first encounter at home, while at Guwahati Kerala Blasters face a 1-0 defeat against NorthEast United FC in the inaugural match of 2016 Hero Indian Super League.

The views of both the coaches before the match.

STEVE COPPELL : “No the first game we tried a possession-based game and it didn’t work out. The games I've seen on TV are more high-tempo and I hope we play much more up-tempo this game. I hope we match up with Kolkata, and make the fans happy,You could say the forward didn’t move enough there are loads of ways to look at this. There wasn't much in the last game, both teams were cancelling out each other. This is our home ground, we are fully focused and we will be putting in our 100%."

JOSE MOLINA : “Last season is the past, this is a new season with new coaches and new players. Every match is different. ATK won last year but to win again tomorrow we will have to work really hard. We have to focus really hard for tomorrow and forget the past. As long as we work together and play as one unit it will not be difficult and we will need to do that in the next game as Kerala Blasters are a very good passing side.”

The match will kick off at 7 pm IST.

PREVIEW - ISL PRESS RELEASE : Emiliano Alfaro struck a brace to down FC Goa 2-0 as NorthEast United grabbed their second successive victory in the Hero Indian Super League clash at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Guwahati, on Tuesday. The Uruguayan striker scored once in each session as the hosts surged to the top of the table with six points from their first two matches at home.

Both teams were cagey at the start and took time to ascertain each other’s strength and spot weakness. NorthEast United seemed more settled at the start and wasted a golden chance in the 12th minute. A left-footed cross from Koffi Christian, popularly known as Romaric, was missed at the first post by Alfaro but there was still a chance for Katsumi who chose to go for glory himself, only for Goa goalkeeper Kattimani to make a diving safe. Had Yusa, who scored the winner in the opening match, spotted his teammates in the box, the story may have been different.

ISL MATCH SCORE 2016

NorthEast United did not have to wait for too long for the opening goal which was a gift from the goalkeeper. Captain Lucio’s back-pass for the Goa goalkeeper should have been routine clearance but instead Kattimani waited on the ball, and when he tried to clear, the ball struck Alfaro and sailed into the goal much to the joy of the home crowd.

FC Goa tried to fight their way back and carved two good chances towards the closing stages of the first half. In the 38th minute, Mandar Rao Desai got past two defenders on the left and pulled the ball back for Jofre Gonzalez whose shot was blocked by NorthEast goalkeeper Subrata Paul.

Just a minute before half-time, NorthEast survived again. This time it was from a Jofre free-kick which an unmarked Lucio squared it across the goal but before it reached the dangerous Rafael Coelho, the ball hit Robin Gurung and fell safely into the hands of the goalkeeper. In the second session, FC Goa continued to attack and the NorthEast goalkeeper had to make a double save. Mandar was the first to test Paul from close range and then a long ranger from Trindade Goncalves was again parried away by the goalkeeper.

NorthEast increased their lead in the 63rd minute with some brilliant play. A through ball from just beyond the half-way mark was flicked into Alfaro’s path by Holicharan Narzary and the Uruguayan striker did well to beat Kattimani from a narrow angle.Alfaro should have scored his hat-trick in the 79th minute when he was within handshaking distance of the goal but his shot was saved on the line by Raju Gaekwad.

PREVIEW - ISL PRESS RELEASE : NorthEast United FC have little time to savour their victory in the opening match of the Hero Indian Super League (HISL) as they now prepare to face FC Goa at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati, on Tuesday.

NorthEast United scored a solitary goal victory over Kerala Blasters in the opening encounter with Japanese midfielder Katsumi Yusa scoring the all-important goal. The start was encouraging for new head coach Nelo Vingada but the Portuguese coach knows there is plenty of scope for improvement.

“I am happy, we made a few good syncs better than I expected. But I know we have to play better to reach the semis which is my target and of my players, so we have to be more consistent. If we don’t grow up and play better, it won’t be enough,” said the Portuguese coach.

NorthEast United’s next opponents will be FC Goa, coached by Brazilian legend Zico, and although the match comes 36 hours after the opener, it is unlikely that ‘The Professor’ will change the winning combination.

“For me this was the best eleven which I could use for the game because some players are injured and most of the players are not fully fit for 90 minutes as they are only 70% fit. But I am satisfied with the foreign players and I am also very happy with the Indian boys,” said Vingada.

Nobody really knows what to expect from FC Goa as they launch their campaign away from home. FC Goa had their pre-season in Brazil and played four friendlies with chief coach Zico using different players and trying out different formations. FC Goa did not play any friendlies at home leaving everyone wondering about the starting eleven.

FC Goa, however, will not be able to use the services of several players who are nursing injuries. Defenders Gregory Arnolin, Denzil Franco, goalkeeper Subhashish Roy Chowdhury and striker Robin Singh have all picked up injuries during pre-season and will not be available for the opener.

All eyes, however, will be on the new signings from Brazil. Players like Trindade Goncalves, Rafael Dumas, Julio Cesar and Richarlyson, a former Brazilian international, will be seen in action for the first time, although it remains to be seen how many of them can be accommodated in the starting eleven.

FC Goa lost in the final last season against Chennaiyin FC and Zico will be keen to put those memories behind him with victory in the opening match.

MATCH PREVIEW : Head-to-head: The two sides have faced each other six times in the past two seasons with ATK boasting a better record of three wins to Chennaiyin's one. Hero ISL 2015 saw Kolkata inflict three wins on Chennai with one 3-2 win and two 2-1 victories. However, the only Chennaiyin FC win in the first leg of the last year's semis against ATK is perhaps the most telling result of them all given that its 3-0 margin set up a virtually unassailable deficit for ATK to overcome in the second leg. The two meetings between these two sides in Hero ISL 2014 ended in 1-1 and 0-0 draws.

Atletico de Kolkata coach Jose Molina has downplayed suggestions that his side will be out to seek revenge against defending champions Chennaiyin FC in their opening match of the Hero Indian Super League (HISL) at Rabindra Sarobar stadium on Sunday.

Atletico de Kolkata surrendered their title to Chennaiyin FC in the semi-finals last season but a year later as the two teams square up again, the new Kolkata coach does not want to look at what happened last season.

“I think in football it’s not about revenge. They won last season and we can do nothing about that. If we win tomorrow against Chennaiyin FC, we will not play last season’s final. It’s already over. This is not a revenge match; it’s a new season,” the Spanish coach said in his pre-match interaction with the media.

Molina is new to the Indian Super League and takes over from another Spanish coach, Antonio Lopez Habas, who was successful in his first two seasons. The coach, however, is looking forward to his introduction to the ISL, although he has been left in no doubt that it will be a tough encounter.

“Of course, this is my first match in the ISL and I am happy about that. We had a good pre-season in Spain and now 10 days in Kolkata. I think we are ready. I have confidence in my players and the team. To start against the champions is also difficult. They are a strong team and it will be a tough match but like I told you before, I have absolute confidence in my team,” said Molina.

Atletico de Kolkata have retained a majority of their players from last season. There are however plenty of changes to the domestic players and all of them have impressed the coach so far. “Absolutely happy with the Indian players. They are trying to improve and learn. Sometimes it’s a problem with the language but I told them to ask me if they have any doubt. Some of the Indian players couldn’t join us in Spain for pre-season but during the 10 days of training here, they have worked really well,” he said.

Defending champions Chennaiyin FC will start their campaign to defend the title without their talismanic striker Stiven Mendoza, who won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball last season. Brazilian striker Bruno Pelissari, who was with them for the first two seasons, is also not around but coach Marco Materazzi has snared foreign strikers, including Nigerian striker Dudu Omagbemi, and believes they can get the job done.

Much will also depend on star striker Jeje Lalpekhlua, who has taken Indian football by storm in the last 18 months, scoring heavily at both the domestic and international level. 0': This will be the opening match of the third edition of ISL.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : NorthEast United FC kick-started their campaign in the 3rd Hero Indian Super League (HISL) on a winning note with a 1-0 victory over Kerala Blasters in Guwahati on Saturday. After a barren first session where NorthEast United dominated for long spells, Katsumi Yusa scored the all-important goal in the 54th minute.

NorthEast United were determined to get a positive result from the opener and fielded an attacking line-up with Nicolas Velez, Holicharan Narzary and Emiliano Alfaro in attacking positions. Kerala, on the other hand, were content in soaking up the pressure which they did well in the first 45 minutes but succumbed to NorthEast’s might in the second session.

NorthEast United started the stronger of the two teams although there were hardly any chances in the opening minutes. The home side got their first look at goal in the 24th minute, thanks to a sloppy pass by Kerala goalkeeper Graham Stack which was almost captialised by Nicolas Velez. The lazy kick fell to Romaric who struck from a distance but had no power to beat and embarrass the rival goalkeeper.

A free-kick midway into the first session saw Velez out-jump his marker and head towards goal but Stack did well this time to stretch wide and keep out the danger.NorthEast were continuously attacking in the opening 45 minutes but had nothing to show as the strikers were found wanting.

The home defence was relaxed for most part of the first half but centre-backs Mailson Alves and Gustavo Lazzaretti were needed to stay alert whenever the three-man strike force of Kerala Blasters worked their way on top. Two successive attempts in the 35th and 36th minutes were the closest they got but Antonio German’s shot from about 30 yards fell into the safe hands of goalkeeper Subrata Paul and Sandesh Jhingan could not direct his header towards goal.

After near misses in the first half, NorthEast United finally tasted success in the 54th minute. It was Velez who made it happen after dancing down the left flank and essaying a cross which the Kerala defence missed and Katsumi was only too happy to speed forward and tap it into the goal.

Kerala Basters tried hard to find the equaliser and came close just after the hour mark. Jhingan’s attempted cross sailed unintentionally towards goal and Subrata Paul dived frenetically to keep the ball away from danger. From the resultant corner kick, Subrata left his charge needlessly, got stranded but German’s strike from close range missed the target by a whisker.
