Red-letter day in Indian Football history as Goa books AFC Champions League ticket

IS PRESS RELEASE : FC Goa scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian club to secure a spot in the AFC Champions League group stage following a 5-0 win against Jamshedpur FC in their final Hero Indian Super League group stage clash at the JRD Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Ferran Corominas (11'), Hugo Boumous (70', 90’), Jackichand Singh (84’) and Mourtada Fall (87’) made it a five-star affair for Goa as they also became the first-ever side to record 50 ISL league wins. They also broke their own record and ended the league stage with 46 goals - an all-time high. The win ensured that Goa finished the league stage as toppers with 39 points from 18 matches, claiming the Hero ISL League Winners Shield in the process. Jamshedpur finished their season eighth with 18 points.

With the top spot and an AFC Champions League group stage entry at stake, Goa started the game on a positive note. There were no signs of complacency and it took the visitors just 10 minutes to break the deadlock. Boumous initiated a counter-attack for his team after Mobashir Rahman missed his kick from a Jamshedpur corner. The Goa midfielder set Corominas free into open space and with the Jamshedpur defence caught unawares, the striker executed a fine finish into the net past goalkeeper Rafique Ali.

Jamshedpur, who were playing for pride after having lost out on a playoff spot, were unwilling to sit back after going behind. Davide Grande missed a sitter in the 26th minute as the hosts took Goa on. From an attack down the left flank, Sumeet Passi crossed into the box for an unmarked Grande at the far post but the striker hit it wide from close range.

The tempo of the game was slower after the restart. Ahmed Jahouh nicked the ball off Monroy in midfield and fed Corominas who charged at the defence. The striker laid the ball off for Doungel whose shot had to be deflected by Memo Moura. A brilliant effort by Boumous nearly doubled Goa's lead after the hour mark. The Frenchman dribbled towards the edge of the box from the left flank before hitting a terrific shot that ricocheted off the woodwork.

Boumous, who has been in supreme form this season, provided the much-needed second goal in the 70th minute. Boumous dribbled into the box from the centre, found Doungel to his left who chipped the ball right back into the path of the in-form attacker who smashed the ball into the net from six yards out.

With Jamshedpur looking tired, Goa added three more goals towards the end of the game to script a fitting finish. Boumous picked up his 10th assist of the season with a good through-ball for Jackichand who lobbed the goalkeeper and found the net. Minutes later, a chipped cross from the left flank by Edu Bedia found Fall who nodded the ball into the net to make it 4-0. Then, Boumous picked up the ball from the left flank late on, dribbled towards the byline, beating a couple of defenders in the process, and found the net from a narrow angle to score Goa's fifth goal.

The Gaurs will be awarded the League Winners Shield in their home leg playoff game.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : A brilliant Roy Krishna brace (2', 75') helped ATK ease past an ineffective Jamshedpur FC 3-0 in a Hero Indian Super League clash at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Monday. Edu Garcia (59') also added his name to the scoresheet as the visitors secured their ninth win of the season. ATK are now level on points (30) at the top of the table with Goa after 15 matches. Jamshedpur have seen their play-off hopes virtually end and are now seventh with 16 points.

ATK came out all-guns-blazing and broke the deadlock just two minutes into the game. The visitors' high-voltage start was rewarded when an under-pressure Sandip Mandi chose to play a weak pass to Memo Moura. Roy Krishna was alert to the situation and the Fijian striker intercepted, charged towards the goal and slotted past Subrata Paul with ease.

Paul was next in line to err while trying to play out from the back. The goalkeeper tried to take a touch and kick the ball after collecting a back-pass from Memo but hit straight to Krishna. This time though, the striker sent his effort straight back at the keeper. It was one-way traffic in the first half as ATK continued to threaten Jamshedpur's goal. In the 26th minute, Edu outfoxed his marker and got into a one-on-one against Paul but the veteran custodian charged off his line and produced a crucial save.

After the half an hour mark, Paul's desire to build-up play from the back went awry again. His pass, which was easily cut off, landed at the feet of Krishna who squared it to Edu. The Spaniard shifted his feet and shot but was denied by Joyner Lourenco at the goal line. Jamshedpur's fortunes went from bad to worse at the start of the second half when the referee ordered an early bath for Jitendra Singh. The defender failed to get the ball in a sliding challenge that halted Jayesh Rane's counter-attack and received his second yellow card.

Edu, who was ATK's creative source throughout the first half, turned up at the end of a fine counter-attacking move to double his team's lead close to the hour-mark. The Spanish midfielder initiated the counter by finding Krishna ahead of him, then charged into the box to receive the striker's cushioned return and finished into the net with aplomb. With 15 minutes left in the game, Krishna sealed three points for his team. Prabir Das forwarded a pass to Edu Garcia who released a terrific through ball for Krishna who gave Paul no chance to make a save. Jamshedpur had no response to ATK's relentlessness all over the pitch and succumbed to their second consecutive defeat by a three-goal margin.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Erik Paartalu grabbed a goal and an assist as Bengaluru FC reduced the gap at the top of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) table with a convincing 2-0 win against Jamshedpur FC at the Kanteerava Stadium here on Thursday. The hosts scored from a set-piece when Erik Paartalu (8') scored from Dimas Delgado's corner. Sunil Chhetri (63') doubled the lead after the break to put the result beyond doubt. The win takes Bengaluru to the second spot on the table with 22 points from 12 matches. Jamshedpur remain sixth with 13 points.

New signing David Grande started up top as Jamshedpur also had Gourav Mukhi returning to the ISL after 13 months. Bengaluru started the game on the front foot and looked the more likely team to break the deadlock. They did from a Dimas Delgado corner-kick eight minutes into the game. The Spaniard's dangerous delivery was met at the near post by Paartalu who beat Narender Gahlot in the air and sent a powerful header into the net that left Subrata Paul with no chance.

Ashique Kuruniyan was afforded space to run down the flanks and the young winger made the most of the opportunity. Minutes later going ahead, Ashique dribbled his way out of a crowded area, made room for a shot and struck a ferocious volley that Paul somehow kept out.Jamshedpur's new signing David Grande had a couple of good moments in the first half, but the team went into the break without registering a single shot on target. Grande fed Faruk Choudhary into the box before the break, but Ashique tracked back well to block the Indian forward's shot from inside the box.

Jamshedpur struggled to contain Ashique down the flanks and he came close again soon after the restart. He won the ball in his own half, dribbled all the way to the final third, played a one-two with Manuel Onwu and lashed the return wide of the goal from inside the box.The visitors lacked a goalscoring threat inside the box, but Aitor Monroy nearly made amends at the hour-mark. Noe Acosta dribbled away from a crowd of Bengaluru players and laid the ball off for Monroy whose brilliant strike flew just wide of Gurpreet's post.

Bengaluru's intensity to keep going forward paid off as they doubled their lead just after the hour mark. Erik Paartalu played a magnificent long ball to release Chhetri into the box. Narender failed to react to the pass and the forward headed the ball forward to take the onrushing keeper out of the equation and slotted home with ease.A hopeful long ball gave Grande the chance to run through on goal, but a brilliant one-handed reflex save by Gurpreet denied Jamshedpur a way back into the game.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Odisha FC got off to a winning start in their first Hero Indian Super League match at the Kalinga Stadium, edging Jamshedpur FC 2-1 on Friday. Aridane Santana's (28', 45') first-half brace ensured a conclusive lead for Odisha as Aitor Monroy’s (38') penalty-kick went in vain for the visitors, who are now winless in their last five games. The three points allowed Odisha to climb to the sixth spot on the table, with 12 points from 10 matches. Jamshedpur remain fourth, with 13 points.

27.12.2019 : ODISHA FC 2-1 JAMSHEDUR FC (FT)

Odisha were able to bypass the press after the visitors' early onslaught and used their width to good effect. Nandhakumar Sekar collected a diagonal from the right and released Narayan Das who made an overlapping run down the left flank. The full-back crossed into the centre of the box and with the Jamshedpur centre-backs focused on marking Santana, Xisco Hernandez sent his header over the bar.

Both teams struggled to churn out clear-cut chances but the hosts broke the deadlock before the half hour mark. Santana nicked possession near the halfway line and flicked it to Nandhakumar. The winger dribbled forward, returned the favour and the Spaniard took a touch before slotting a neat finish past Subrata into the net.

Jamshedpur attacked in numbers and levelled the scoreline before the break. Narayan Das' clumsy challenge on Sumeet Passi inside the box was punished by the referee and Aitor Monroy stepped up to place the ball into the bottom left corner from 12 yards.

Seconds before the half-time whistle, the hosts went ahead again in spectacular fashion. Nandhakumar crossed into the box from the left for Aridane who struck a brilliant volley into the top corner to make it 2-1. Santana had the chance to complete his hat-trick soon after the change of ends. Nandhakumar beat his marker on the left and passed the ball to Marcos Tebar who laid it off for Santana. The striker's right-footed effort lacked power, allowing Subrata to collect.

Jamshedpur put pressure on the Odisha defence as the second half wore on. Mobashir Rahman saw Francisco Dorronsoro off his line and attempted a long-range effort that flew over the bar. Farukh Choudhary missed a golden chance when Narender Gahlot delivered a good cross into the box. The India international attempted a header that flew just wide, much to the dismay of the travelling fans. The Odisha defence was able to survive the late forays into the box, thus securing a vital win for Josep Gombau at the first Hero ISL game in Bhubaneshwar.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Jamshedpur FC and Chennaiyin FC had to settle for a point each at the end of a thrilling Hero Indian Super League encounter which ended 1-1 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Monday. It was the away side who took the lead through Nerijus Valskis’ fine strike in the 26th minute. However, Jamshedpur denied Chennaiyin a win by coming up with an equaliser through Issac Vanmalsawma in the 89th minute.

With this draw, Jamshedpur find themselves in the fourth position with 12 points while Chennaiyin FC are still ninth with six points from seven games.Antonio Iriondo handed a start to Sumeet Passi in the absence of the injured striker Sergio Castel. Meanwhile, Owen Coyle, in his first match in charge, named an unchanged eleven for Chennaiyin FC which started against Odisha FC last month.

Jamshedpur had the first major chance of the game in the 13th minute when C.K.Vineeth found himself in acres of space down the left. He only had to find Passi or Farukh Choudhary inside the box. However, his cross was misdirected and the chance went abegging. At the other end, Lallianzuala Chhangte got behind the Jamshedpur defence on the left and his cross was just about cleared by Tiri before Thoi Singh got on the end of it.

The breakthrough the away side desperately sought came in the 27th minute through Nerijus Valskis who bagged his fourth goal of the campaign. He got the ball on the edge of the box and found Rafael Crivellaro. The Brazilian turned Aitor Monroy and passed it back to Valskis who took a touch and shot on the turn which hit the inside of the far post on its way inside the goal.

Just after the half an hour mark, Jamshedpur were jolted when Noe Costa suffered a shoulder injury after a challenge from Masih Saighani and had to be substituted with Jitendra Singh taking his place. The best chance for the home side came in the 38th minute as Choudhary squared it for Passi. However, the striker, under pressure from Eli Sabia, couldn’t connect well which allowed Lucian Goian to clear the danger.

Iriondo brought in Aniket Jadhav to replace Mobashir Rahman to fortify his team’s attack after the break. From a quick counter, Crivellaro sent Chhangte through but the left winger’s tame shot went straight into the hands of Subrata Paul.At the other end, Vishal Kaith was called into action in the 69h minute when Isaac Vanmalsawma’s dink from the right looked headed for the top corner before the Chennaiyin goalkeeper pushed it out for a corner.

Chennaiyin themselves had a golden opportunity when Chhangte broke forward at pace and only had to square it an unmarked Andre Schembri, but his pass was a bit too strong for the Maltese striker. Chennaiyin were left to rue that miss in the 89th minute when Aniket Jadhav showed silky skills to fox a couple of defenders and find Passi inside the box. He picked out Issac whose shot was deflected in off Farukh Chowdhury, wrong-footing the goalkeeper.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Sergio Castel’s fine form in front of goal was not enough for Jamshedpur FC as NorthEast United fought back late for a pulsating 1-1 draw at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Monday. The hosts were the dominant side in this Hero Indian Super League encounter and Spanish striker Sergio Castel's fifth goal of the season in the 28th-minute seemed to have given all three points for Antonio Iriondo’s men. But a 90th-minute equaliser from Panagiotis Triadis ensured NorthEast United’s unbeaten record remained intact.

The result sees Jamshedpur second on the table, level on points (11) with ATK at the top while NorthEast are now fourth with 10 points to their name.Jamshedpur started on the front foot and looked dangerous going forward. Six minutes into the game, Noe Acosta dribbled to the byline on the left flank and chipped the ball to the centre of the box for Farukh Choudhary whose acrobatic overhead kick flew just over the bar.

The NorthEast defence struggled to contain a clever Jamshedpur forward line, led by Castel. The Atletico Madrid loanee finished off a wonderful team move close to the half an hour mark to give the home team the lead. Aitor Monroy's splendid pass into the box found Farukh who squared the ball to Castel. The striker chested it down before sending the ball into the net.

Minutes later, Memo Moura's drilled effort found an unmarked Castel in the box but this time, the striker shot wide from close-range, much to the relief of the visitors who struggled throughout the first 45 minutes. In a bid to get back into the game, the visitors turned aggressive in their approach after restart and gave away fouls in their own half. Jamshedpur enforced a free-kick routine from the training pitch in one such set-piece opportunity, but Narender Gehlot, who sneaked in behind the defence to get to Acosta's delivery, headed onto the roof of the net.

NorthEast showed signs of a comeback as the half wore on and Triadis and Gyan saw more of the ball. The winger fed the Ghanaian through on goal twice in quick succession, but the forward was unable to convert.Gyan threatened again after the hour-mark, bearing down on goal after a quick counter-attack, but failed to skip past Memo who stuck out his leg to nick the ball off the striker before he could get a shot away.

The Jamshedpur midfield, consisting of Jitendra Singh and Monroy, kept the ball well and frustrated their opponents. But yet again, there was twist at the death as NorthEast came up with an equaliser against the run of play in the 90th minute. Gyan flicked a long ball into the path of Triadis who attacked the space left unattended by Gurung and Memo to flick a finish past Subrata Paul to ensure the Highlanders had a share of the spoils.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Jamshedpur FC returned to winning ways and handed FC Goa their first defeat of the season (1-0) in the Hero Indian Super League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday. In a closely-contested match, Sergio Castel's 17th-minute strike, his fourth of the season, proved to be the difference between the two sides. Castel climbed to the top of the goalscoring chart and Jamshedpur climbed to the second spot on the table with 10 points after five matches. Goa slipped to fourth and have eight points.

Goa were quick to take control of the game and threatened the visitors' goal early on. Edu Bedia dribbled forward and released Jackichand Singh down the right flank before the winger's powerful shot from a tight angle was blocked by an alert Subrata Paul. Jamshedpur found an opening in the 12th minute when Castel dropped deep to pick up the ball and found Robin Gurung's overlap to his right. The full-back's floating cross was met by CK Vineeth at the far post but the Keralite's acrobatic effort flew wide.

Minutes later, the on-loan Atletico Madrid striker put Jamshedpur in the lead, utilising the open space in the hosts' defensive third. The Spanish striker collected a Farukh Choudhary cross from the right, used his first touch to outfox Mourtada Fall in the box and confidently slotted the ball into the bottom corner. There were chances at both ends before the break. ISL debutant Jitendra Singh's strike from distance was tipped over by Mohammed Nawaz and Edu’s glancing header was saved on the goal line.

Jackichand Singh continued to threaten with one cross after another from the right flank after the break but they were dealt with by the Jamshedpur defence. Brandon Fernandes attempted an ambitious curler from outside the box close to the hour-mark that failed to test the goalkeeper. Goa continued to apply pressure in the attacking third and Jamshedpur's chances had dried up. Edu fed Jackichand into the box and with the full frame of the goal in front of him, the winger blasted his effort over the bar.

Goa were reduced to 10 men towards the end of the second half when Ahmed Jahouh, who had picked up a yellow card in the fifth minute and was on a thin rope throughout the game, slid in late on Noe Acosta. The central midfielder was shown a second yellow, dealing a body blow for Sergio Lobera’s men. ISL MEDIA RELEASE: Jamshedpur FC dropped points for the first time in the sixth season of the Hero Indian Super League after a goalless yet action-packed stalemate against Bengaluru FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Sunday. There were chances created at both ends with Bengaluru dominating the proceedings, but both goalkeepers' excellence came to the fore and the attackers were denied goals.

Despite dropped points, Jamshedpur are top of the standings with seven points from three matches. Bengaluru remain winless this season and are seventh, having registered three consecutive draws. The defences were tested within minutes from kick-off. Sunil Chhetri's piledriver, which swerved in the air as it travelled towards the goal, was punched away by goalkeeper Subrata Paul. Seconds later, a counter-attack resulted in Sergio Castel having space and time on the ball at the edge of the box, but the striker's low strike ricocheted off the woodwork.

Bengaluru attempted to put the hosts under pressure with efforts from Juanan and Raphael Augusto helping them test the Jamshedpur defence. In the 20th minute, a Dimas Delgado corner was flicked across goal by Juanan. The ball fell perfectly for Harmanjot Khabra who was denied by Paul with a spectacular reflex save from close range.

Jamshedpur fashioned a chance to score from a corner-kick before the break. Piti received the short corner from the right at the edge of the box, danced past a crowd of Bengaluru defenders before chipping the ball towards the other side of the post, but the cross was aptly cleared away by an alert Bengaluru defence. The end-to-end affair continued after the break. Ashique Kuruniyan set Manuel Onwu free but goalkeeper Paul won the one-on-one contest and kept the scoreline intact.

After the moment of brilliance in goal by Paul in the first half, his opposite number Gurpreet Singh Sandhu's reflexes were tested when Farukh Choudhary attempted an audacious bicycle-kick inside the box from a corner but the India No. 1 produced a one-handed save from point-blank range.Paul was called into action again when Ashique burst forward down the left flank in a quick counter-attack. The Kerala-born winger dribbled into the box and tried to beat the goalkeeper at his near post only for the latter to repel the effort. In the end, neither team was able to fashion a goal as the match ended in an action-packed stalemate.
