PREVIEW :ISL PRESS RELEASE : The last time Zico had faced Roberto Carlos brigade, the ‘Master’ had come up with a one sided 2-0 victory over his ‘Student’ brigade. On Sunday, however this will not only be the opportunity for Carlos – who had claimed Zico is like a father, a teacher to him – to settle the score but also to fight it out for a top spot finish in the concluding league clash of the Hero Indian Super League in Delhi. FC Goa and Delhi Dynamos are placed second and third respectively on the ISL table with 22 points each but FC Goa are ahead with a better goal difference. The teams will eye the top spot but having already qualified for the semi-finals, the focus will be on preserving their best players for bigger challenges ahead. “In our way of thinking, we will field the best players available, although a clear picture will emerge only after the (final) training session. Since the tournament is very short, we will want the best players not to get injured ahead of the semifinals,” FC Goa assistant coach Fernando Vannucci said during the pre-match media briefing. The assistant coach, however, made it clear that the club had achieved its initial target of making it to the play-offs and now the competition would get even tougher. “We are now looking to be first or second so that we can have the advantage of playing the second game at home. In a tournament like the ISL which is so well balanced, we cannot choose any opponent. Every opponent is good and we respect all of them. You must not forget that last year, the final was played between the third and fourth placed team,” said Vannucci. FC Goa will miss the services of Brazilian midfielder Leo Moura who picked up his fourth booking in the last game and remains suspended for the clash against Delhi Dynamos. Delhi Dynamos player-manager Roberto Carlos has already made it clear that he wants players fresh for the semi-final battles. He rested Robin Singh and Seminlen Doungel after achieving qualification for the game against Kerala Blasters and looks set to continue with providing rest to some more players in the final league game. “Against Goa, probably I won’t play (Florent) Malouda, Chicao, probably won’t use (Adil) Nabi, and I want some players to take a rest for the next phase,” Carlos had said earlier after the game against Kerala Blasters. Delhi Dynamos lost to FC Goa in their opening game away in Goa 0-2 but since then the team has made rapid progress, never really falling out of the top four. “Step by step, the team is improving. For the next phase of the league, they will be better because they have spent so much time together. They know each other very well now and that should help them in the next phase,” said the Brazilian. |

PREVIEW - ISL PRESS RELEASE : 05.12.2015 :Chennaiyin FC need only a draw to qualify for the Hero Indian Super League play-offs and coach Marco Materazzi has dismissed suggestions that the altered travel plan could leave them exhausted ahead of their crucial concluding league clash against FC Pune City in Pune on Saturday. Chennaiyin FC travelled by road from Chennai to Tirupati air base and then chartered a flight to Mumbai after Chennai was submerged under flood water due to incessant rain. The travel to Pune took considerable time but Materazzi said it would not be a disadvantage. “When you have this kind of chance, this kind of game, it does not matter how much you travel. Would have done the distance even walking but I am thinking of the people of Chennai who are suffering. We are privileged people and it does not matter if we travel for one or two days,” Materazzi said during the pre-match media briefing. Fourteen days ago, Chennaiyin FC were at the bottom of the table but Materazzi’s team has scripted a remarkable turnaround with big wins over Kerala Blasters (4-1), Delhi Dynamos (4-0) and Mumbai City FC (3-0). “It’s about the players because they had what it took to put in practice what I told them. I kept telling them they had the technical skills, they only had to play as a team. It’s largely because of the intelligence of my players,” said Materazzi. Chennaiyin FC are placed fifth at the moment with 19 points from 13 matches, just one behind NorthEast United FC. Chennaiyin have a better goal average compared to NorthEast United and only a FC Pune City win will knock them out of the league. FC Pune City are already out of the league but coach David Platt will not take it easy. “We are approaching this game professionally. There is no other word for it. This game means nothing for us in terms of what we can achieve. We have not qualified but we have to be professional and prepare for this game like we have done before,” Platt told reporters. Platt said the league provided them with sufficient chances to qualify for the semifinals but Pune City could not capitalize. “To not win for six games and still get an opportunity, that’s the way the league is. Everyone has had a bad patch. There is a great deal of parity,” he said. FC Pune City last won against Kerala Blasters on October 27 and has since then they have not won a game in seven attempts. Interestingly, FC Pune City have won four of their six matches at home and only lost against Delhi Dynamos infront of their home crowd. |

Both NorthEast United and FC Pune City find themselves in a similar do-or-die situation of making it to the play-offs but both teams are keeping the faith as they cross swords in Guwahati on Wednesday. “It's true that we had a big possibility in the last game but we let it slip through our hands. But it is also true that we still have a possibility. It's not impossible. You have got to keep going and concentrate on what's coming up next. We’ll fight till we have the slightest of chances to make it. These are big games and a win can make all the difference for us,” NorthEast United coach Cesar Farias said during the pre-match media briefing. NorthEast United FC are placed fourth on the table with 17 points from 13 matches. But unlike other claimants for the lone available semifinal slot, NorthEast have only one match in hand and, even if they win, will have to hope that other results go their way. “It’s a big game and necessary (to win) for both teams. We will have to risk a lot of things,” said Farias. FC Pune City are in a slightly better position since they still have matters in their own hands. Win the next two games and they will inch closer to the qualification for the last-four stage, although it must be remembered that FC Pune City have not won any of their six away matches played so far. They are also without a win in the last six matches. “Now we know where we are and what we need to do. It’s still in our own hands, we depend on our own results. It's about looking forward to this game rather than looking back to the last one,” said FC Pune City manager David Platt. Pune City let it slip in the last game, losing against Atletico de Kolkata 1-4 and David Platt’s team have now won a match (against Kerala Blasters) more than a month ago. “It’s gone, nothing that we can do about it. If you concede four times, it does not matter how many times you hit the woodwork. When you concede so many goals, you cannot win games. It’s goals that change games,” said Platt, when it was put to him that probably Pune were unlucky since they had hit the crossbar three times in the last game. Platt said midfielder Eugeneson Lyngdoh is suspended for the crucial clash while defender Gouramangi Singh is ruled out of the tournament with an injury. Atletico de Kolkata, FC Goa and Delhi Dynamos have all qualified for the semi-finals. |
