SCHOOL FOOTBALL IN KOLKATA : KEVENTER CUP -= 2016 : Organised by Debanjan Sen Foundation

As a toddler Debanjan was in the habit of rolling all over the lush green fields at CCFC. His first 'run' must have also been in that field. The blades of grass were as much a part of his system as the blood in his veins. Almost inevitably he took to the field sports of football, cricket and then hockey.

His heart and soul always lay in football. His talent in the game was matched by his passion for the sport. His other preoccupations possibly stood in the way of him crossing over into the threshold of excellence but he was seldom lacking in desire or intent with regard to the 'Beautiful Game'. He led his school, "La Martinere for Boys" with distinction and was regarded as a great ambassador of the school.

He was held as a footballer of immense promise not only by his peers but also his school coach. In fact, just prior to passing out of school the football team participated in a tournament in Kalyani where not only did the team emerge as champions but Debanjan was declared the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The vision, poise and skill which he had displayed convinced all those who were witness to the matches that Debanjan was a special talent. Alas the promise was cut short by his untimely demise.

However, as his close family and friends, to celebrate his brief but glorious life by moving forward with his unfinished agenda that included development of football in the country. A trust under the name of "Debanjan Sen Foundation" has been formed with the intent of executing programmes which will benefit young and talented sportspersons.

The foundation has already embarked on a coaching programme for 30 boys under 14 years of age. This project is being held at the Howrah Municipal Ground under the guidance of Sri Monojit Das, a former East Bengal player and currently an established coach especially at the Junior and Sub-junior levels.

The foundation has taken another step towards its goal of providing a platform for promising school boys to showcase their football talent by participating in a Inter-School Football Tournament. The Foundation presents the Keventer Cup.

The purpose of this Inter school tournament is to provide an elite competition amongst all the leading schools of the city with an emphasis on the spirit of competition, friendship and fair play all of which were an integral part of Debanjan Sen. Each participant will be given the opportunity to demonstrate his footballing skills while maintaining a spirit of respect and cooperation with fellow team mates from diverse backgrounds.

Through Football Players Association of India (FPAI) who have promised to support this tournament players of the current national team and ex Indian national players will be present as chief guests at the venues. Students from these schools will get an opportunity to meet the best players from the country and interact with them. Outstanding talents spotted by these eminent players may also provide an opportunity for those boys to join the 'Big League'.

The tournaments shall be played in accordance with the FIFA Laws. All participating schools should note that by accepting the invitation to this tournament they are deemed to have accepted and agree to abide by the Rules and Regulations as contained in the "The Debanjan Sen Foundation Inter School Football Tournament".

The Foundation has a vision and a long term plan and will move beyond a coaching camp and a school tournament in the future. For this dream to become a reality we will require the support and cooperation of all those who appreciate and value our cause. We will welcome and cherish your association with the Foundation and extend the gratitude of all the Trustees of the Foundation with regard to the contribution you make. PAST WORK
