A peep into Super League History:

Punjab State Super Football League is an elite division of Leagues in Punjab, which is being played for 'Maharaja Yadwendera Singh Trophy'. Earlier, this competition was confined to one venue which was being allotted at the AGM every year to one affiliated unit (DFA), where teams assembled for one week duration played on knock-out basis and was not recognized as ‘League’ by AIFF or any other football body.

However on representation by Super League Clubs, Punjab Football Association in its Annual General Meeting held at Phagwara on 17th July, 2001 has considered the proposal of concerned clubs and adopted the pattern of league on 'Home & Away' basis and got recognition as 'State League' from AIFF as well.

In time and change in major football ruling that no league is recognized if a team participating in it does not play 12 matches in total, so Punjab Football Association has set up this league on 'double leg' league basis and at present we have 8 teams in this competition and each team has ‘7-home’ & ‘7-away’ matches with other participating teams of the league.

Prevailing circumstance to change format

Although the format currently works in this league fulfilling the criteria the league’s recognition worldwide, but still our league is yet to be developed properly. As the teams had no motivation for playing in this league and were participating for mandatory parameters of Punjab Football Association due to strict PFA rules for mandatory participation. The league had no prize money involved and secondly the champion team got no berth in AIFF federation cup and II Division League as there were certain other criteria.

Local Organizing Committee at each venue has been formed which will see that all Super League Football Matches are held in a smooth manner. ‘Nobel’ would be official ball for playing all super League matches.

The inaugural match of this league between Punjab Police Football Team and BSF Football Team would be held 'under floodlights' at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, on 25th August, 2014 with kick off at 7.00 P.M.
