37th All India Governor's Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2017 MOHUN BAGAN TO PARTICIPATE AFTER 14 YEARS

24.09.2017 : Press Release - SIKKIM FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION (Menla Ethempa-GS) : In the foothills of the Himalayas, the game of football is akin to the people and so is the intensity and love for the game. With the advent of annual "Football Bonanza" moments away, the passion is all time high. The Sikkim Football Association (SFA) is vested with the responsibility of organizing the 37th All India Governor's Gold Cup International Football Tournament from 5th Oct to 15th Oct 2017 at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok. Its inaugural match on 5.10.2017 will be played in Flood Light, while all other matches will be played in the afternoon.

"SIKKIM GOVERNOR'S GOLD CUP INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT' draws big names front within and outside the country, there is an equally match enthusiastic audience waiting to burst into cheers. The SFA organized, ANNUAL GOLD CUP tournament is one of the most prestigious in the country.

This year 12 big names including

I) Mohun Bagan AC, Kolkata
2) Patha Chakra FC, Kolkata
3) ONGC (Mumbai),
4) CRPF-Jalandhar,
5) Indian Army (Red),
6) Manang Masangdi Club (Nepal),

are likely to take part to set blaze the festive season beginning from 5. Oct to 15th Oct 2017. Amongst Sikkim's teams, we have given entry to Sikkim Premier League 1 Topper 2017 (Royal Sikkim United FC) and 2. topper ( Sikkim Himalayan SC ). The initiative is expected and aimed to boost the morale of the youth fraternity of the state and inject enthusiasm and interest for the game. This year SFA has managed to rope in Mohun Bagan Club after the gap of almost 14 years. In 2003, Mohun Bagan lifted the coveted Governor's Gold Cup defeating Arambagh Club, Bangladesh in the final.

The Governor's Gold Cup Football Tournament where there is maximum participants and involvement of public from all walks of life is considered as a biggest entertainment in the gate. Besides, such tournaments have enhanced the zeal and enthusiasm of our local players as a result more than dozens are now playing for different clubs in India and many more are being selected for national teams. The success story of our Survashrii Bhaichung Bhutia (Former Indian captain), Nirmal Chettri, Sanju Pradhan, Bikash Jairu, Rabin Gurung, Kunzang Lachungpa, Sim Dorjee Tamang ( All ISL players ) need not require more emphasis.

The Governor's Gold Cup Football Tournament, besides being one of the most popular football competition of the country, it has added to the festive colors and a popular source of entertainment to the Sikkimese people where there is maximum participants and involvement of public from all walks of life who look forward to this tournament as one of the biggest entertainment in the state.
