Sporting Goa are on their way to the semi final of the 36th Federation Cup. In a dramatic match at Goa today their defeated East Bengal by a margin of 4-3 in a Group A match. The match between Dempo Sports Club and Royal Wahingdoh are a mere formality now, because if Royal Wahingdoh wins against Dempo then also Sporting Goa will be in the knockout stages as they have won against Royal Wahingdoh in the Group league match and have a better goal average.

As per the mathematics, the winner of this match would make the last-four at the cost of the other with a draw helping Raoyal Wahingdoh sniff a chance if they defeated Dempo on tomorrow Sporting Goa opened their scoring at the first minute of the match through Victorino Fernandez but had to concede two goals within the first forty five minutes.

Sporting restored parity just before the break through Antony Wolfe when he heads brilliantly a long lob from Kalu Okba from the right. Victorino had a improvised match today as he converted twice in the second session and scored the second hattrick of the tournament. In fact he is the main architect to Sporting Goa's victory and has been awarded as the ‘Hero Of The Match’. Down by 2-3 in the first half, Sporting Goa came back strongly in the second session and showcased an exhibition of good team effort with a positive frame of mind.

On the contrary East Bengal who were leading by 3-2 in the first session wasted a number of opportunities in the second session. It was Dudu Omegbemi, who can be blamed for the missed opportunities. In one instance Dudu failed a touch a pass from Ranti Maritns from a yard away from the goal line.

Dudu can wrap up the match in favor of Red and Gold as his shot was saved by Ravi Kumar. Dudu shot within the reach of Ravi Kumar instead of placing the ball at the far corner of the net. East Bengal who shared the maximum ball possession in the first half had to surrender in front of speedy and well combined attack of Sporting Goa in the second session. The deep defenders of East Bengal and goalkeeper Subasish Roy Chowdhury were quite busy to combat the continuous attack of Sporting Goa.

East Bengal, who were the most successful team in the Federation Cup since 2007, were the champions in four occasions, and finished second in one instance. But were eliminated from the Federation Cup at the Group Stage for the second year running.

East Bengal to play against Sporting Clube De Goa in their last match of Group A, which will ultimately decide that who will going to join Dempo Sports Club in the semi final of the 36th Federation Cup.

The Group are in an interesting position. Dempo Sports Club are already in the semifinal with nine points after being won against Mumbai FC by a brace, with still to play against Royal Wahingdoh. East Bengal are on four points from three matches, while Sporting Clube De Goa are on three points from three matches. In order to reach the semifinal it is a must win situation for both these teams. The equations are calculated as :

1.If East Bengal wins they will be on seven points to qualify for the semifinal.

2. If East Bengal drew against Sporting Goa, they will be on five points and have to wait for the result of the match between Dempo Sports Club and Royal Wahingdoh.

3. If Sporting Goa wins, they will move up to six points from four matches and will be qualify to play the semi final. If Royal Wahingdoh wins against Dempo and the goal average of both the teams are equal then Sporting Goa will be the semifinalist as they had won against Royal Wahingdoh in the Group league match.

4.If the match between East Bengal and Sporting Goa ends in a draw and Royal Wahingdoh wins against Dempo they have the chance to qualify in the semifinal.

In this context the tensions are mounting high at Goa for the Group A match between East Bengal and Sporting Goa as the record shows that the Goan side are always a tough competitor of Red and Gold.
