PFC RELEASE: Pune FC came up with a cameo performance to register their biggest ever win on Sunday. In their final group match, Pune FC hammered United Sikkim FC 6-1 for their first win of the 117th IFA Shield at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata. Victory put Pune FC on level with Deportivo Saprissa with 4 points each. However, with the Central Americans scheduled to play United Sikkim FC (0 points) on Tuesday, Pune FC's progress to the semifinals rests on a favourable result, including goal-difference.

A USFC's win will help Pune FC progress, but a loss with a margin of 2 goals will mean curtains. Pune FC has a +2 goal difference, while Saprissa is +1. With a job cut out against USFC, Pune FC went into the match with purpose. Striker James Moga struck a hat-trick (27th, 64th, 78th minutes), which again was a first of sorts by any Pune FC player.

While Moga completed his heroic feat in the second half, Pune FC had striker Boima "Jerry" Karpeh (9th), defender Zohmingliana Ralte (49th) and substitute Subash Singh (87th) add to the tally, with USFC pulling one back through Paablo Rodrigues' 25th minute penalty kick conversion. After going close in the early exchanges, Pune FC took the lead through Jerry. The striker from the right did well to receive and control and get into the penalty box by cutting past a defender and then bulldozing past another. Once clear, Jerry unleashed a powerful left-foot past 'keeper Rakshit.

Couple of minutes later, winger Karma Tsewang put one in the back of the net after Moga put him in the clear. However, the linesman flagged offside which seemed debatable. Fifteen minutes on and Moga struck the post from a distance, while Sukhwinder Singh found the side netting off a second ball from long. Midway into the the game, the opponents were rewarded a penalty after Pune FC custodian Abhra Mondal fouled the USFC striker on the long ball inside the penalty area. Striker Pablo made no mistake from the spot to level terms.

Three minutes later, Pune FC once again restored their lead. Moga did well to shield a defender before turning intelligently to create space and score. USFC, then, had Nuruddin Salau head a cross from the left wide off target. Pune FC's urgency led to Moga being flagged offside a couple of times. Three minutes past the first quarter of game, Moga made way for a third goal, only to have strike partner Jerry blast over his attempt from a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Jerry then joined the off-side list, before Pune FC ran in spate of attacks. The closest was Vellington Rocha's who forced a full stretched dive from the keeper.

At the other end, Pune FC defense were holding firm with keeper Abhra Mondal flapping a try over and Salau getting through for a try that went wide. At the break, Pune FC led 2-1, after a Pune FC dominated spell in injury time which had Rocha go over from the six-yard box twice. Pune FC came out all guns blazing in the second half and increased their lead almost instantly. Jerry earned a free kick after Abhishek Das' studs-up challenge on him. The free kick was intelligently worked by Moga who faked a shot before sliding the ball to Rocha on the run. Rocha'ss low cross into the six-yard box was smartly tapped in by an alert Ralte.

Substitute Khanthang Paite had a delivery straight into the keeper, before USFC produced their best chance through Linekar Machado which keeper Abhra thwarted. The rebound fell to Salau who headed over. Nearing the hour, Rocha had his attempt saved. Six minutes later, Moga scored his second. Medio Velington Rocha intercepted a ball on the half line, before running the length of the pitch to earn a corner. From the corner, Rocha's brilliant delivery was headed in by Moga.

Moga then completed his hat-trick twelve minutes from time. Karma did well to win the ball before laying off for Moga outside the box, who calmly outfoxed his marker and slotted past the 'keeper. Three minutes from time, substitute Subash made it a tennis scoreline. Striker Moga did well to chase down a loose ball and then beat a defender before sliding the ball past the 'keeper to Subash who tapped in with ease.

MATCH REPORT : PFC RELEASE : Pune FC go down to Mohun Bagan in IFA opener:

Pune FC went down 0-3 to Mohun Bagan AC in their IFA Shield Group-A opener at the Kalyani Stadium, Kolkata on Tuesday. Striker CS Sabeeth's brace (4th & 53rd minute) along with skipper Odafa Okolie's (30th) goal from a free-kick were enough to give Mohun Bagan the win.The loss to Bagan was Pune FC's second in the IFA Shield and third in 5 matches played in Kolkata. br>

In a game of a physical nature, Pune FC went close couple of time in the opening minutes. Midfielder Velington Rocha's attempt from the edge of the box went over after Douhou Pierre slid back the ball from the left. A minute later, striker James Moga's overhead kick went just wide after he did well to connect the ball. At the other end, some sloppy defending cost Pune FC as Mohun Bagan took the lead. Medio Quinton Jacobs' cross in from the left was headed into the box by Odafa to Sabeeth on the run, who controlled it with his chest and volleyed home.

Thereafter the game became more physical and was evident by the increasing number of fouls by both sides. At the quarter hour mark, Douhou's freekick in from the left was cleared by the Bagan defense. Midway through the half, Pune FC went close from another freekick. Douhou's crisp freekick, once again from the left, was missed by all players rushing into the box only for an alert 'keeper Shilton Paul to clear off the goalline.

At the half hour mark, another moment of madness cost Pune FC. As Odafa set on a counter, three Pune FC defenders tried to stop him giving away a cheap foul. The Nigerian scored directly from the freekick to double Bagan's lead. Two minutes later, Moga was brought down by Anyiche after he tried to connect Khanthang Paite's low cross into the box. Substitute Subash Singh, on for Shanmugam Venkatesh, too was denied after his attempt was blocked.

Pune FC went into the break trailing by two goals. The second half began with Pune FC taking charge, however finishing in the final third let them down. But it was Mohun Bagan who scored again after some more poor defending by Pune FC. Medio Jacobs was allowed to run into the box in the right as he slid the ball past defenders Anas Edathodika and Caitano Costa. Sabeeth tapped in into the empty net after 'keeper Shahinlal Meloly too was out of position.

At the other end, Subash's powerful drive from the left was blocked by the keeper and the rebound was too quick for Rocha to handle. Pune FC then had striker Moga go close twice in a space of five minutes. Minutes past the hour mark, Moga's free-kick from 30-yards was saved by keeper Shilton. He once again produced a diving save on Moga's second free-kick from the edge of the box to deny Pune FC a goal.

All in all for Pune FC it was an off colour performance wherein poor finishing and defending did them in.

20.03.2013: JAYDIP DASGUPTA : The United Sports Club of Kolkata lifts the historical 117th IFA Shield tournament and emerge as a new champion. At Yuba Bharati Kriannangan they defeated the defending champions East Bengal by a solitary goal scored by Nigerian Goal Machine Ranty Martins at the 79th minute of the match. This is United Sports maiden victory after entering the final of the historic IFA Shield final for the third time (2005, 2012 and 2013). In the IFA CFL premier league Priliminary Round Match East Bengal got Walk over from United SC.

It has been a match of strategies in the first half as both the team fought to control the midfield. The Prayag midfield controlled by Lalkamal Bhowmick and the Coastarican worldcupper Carlos. Lalkamal was playing in front of the stopper backs collecting the loose balls and passing for Carlos and Asif to utilizing the right side of East Bengal deep defense. RANTY MARTINS SCORED HIS 32nd GOAL IN THE SEASON 2012-13 FOR UNITED SC AS HE SCORED TODAY and declared man of the match in the final with 3 goals in the tournament.

East Bengal on the other hand opened the goal mouth in two occasions but failed to convert the easiest of chances. Andrew Barisik failed to trap a ball in the open net as it was cleared by Belo Razzak in expense of a corner. In the 35th minute Barisik heads brilliantly from a Penn Orji center which was equally well saved by the United goal keeper Sangram. United had a close chance when Asif K's shot was fisted by Gurpit over the bar. UNITED COACH ELCO'S 18TH WIN IN HIS STINT IN THE UNITED SC STARTED FROM I-LEAGUE MATCH ON 10.11.2012 AGAINST UNITED SIKKIM. united stopper bello rasaq declared man of the tournament.

In the first half it was observed that United was attacking through the left side only, but in the later part they used both the channels in the East Bengal deep defense. At one time the intensity of the United attacking was so heavy that it was seen that Andrew Barisik was clearing the ball from Ranty's feet well inside the 18 yards. East Bengal coach James Morgan lost after an unbeaten run in last 16 matches.

In this session Gurpit had to rise in four occasions to save the red and goal citadel. The all important and the deserving goal came in the 79th minute when Ranty Martins places a forward through from Tulanga in the back of the net which went in after a deflection of the East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpit Singh. This is Ranty's 32nd goal for the Purple brigade.

East Bengal coach in the post match press meeting said that United Sports has utilized the opportunities which his team has failed. Morgan denied the word fatigue and said that they were equally keen to win the championship. After a long drama of 120 min the East Bengal Club entered the final of the 117th IFA Shield to meet against the Prayag united on 20th evening at Kolkata. This is East Bengal's 28 th entry in the IFA Shield final.East Bengal overcome their arch rivals Mohun Bagan by a margin of 5-3 in tie-breaker.

A truly world class conversion by Andrew Borisic in the 87th minute of the match put back the red and gold back in the game after been trailing by C.S.Sabeeth's goal in the 46th minute. It was the 87th minute when the red and gold brigade had lost all their hopes, Naoba Singh sends a grounder pass to Cheddi, who passes inside the 18 yards and Borisic with the instep of his right foot triggered into the Bagan's goal with Shilton Paul the custodian does not have any response to give. Mohan Bagan took the lead in the 46th minute when Odafa passes forward a Nirmal Chettri's center from the right to Sabeeth, who places to the left of Gurpit to give the mariners the lead.

East Bengal started well plays a number of passes in the first half. The red and gold dominated in the middle third and created some opportunities. But unable to convert as Cheddi and Dika failed to capitalize the situations. In the first half East Bengal earned four corners as against Mohun Bagan's one.

In the second session Mohan Bagan came back in the match and plays a number of passes in the rival's territory. In the first 15 minutes of the second half the mariners really dominated and successful in creating pressure in the East Bengal's deep defense. In some occasions both the teams were using their physical strength and the referee Santosh Kumar had to flash yellow cards in eight occasions.

If Andrew Borisic was the hero within the 90 minutes then undoubtedly it was Gurpit Singh Sandhu whoso heroic approach in the penalty shoot out helped East Bengal to reach the final. Gurpit saved the first shot of Odafa while Nirmal shoot wide.

It may be mention that in 2004 Mohan Bagan won against East Bengal in penalty shoot out in the IFA Sheild semi final to reach the final.

East Bengal vs United SC - 117th IFA Shield Final tomorrow

19.03.2013: JAYDIP DASGUPTA: The defending champions East Bengal are now set to meet the United SC in the final of the 117th IFA Shield final at the Vivekananda Yubabharati Kiannangan on the 20th evening. Incidentally United SC are the runners up in the 116th IFA Shield. So, it is now a question to the football lovers of Kolkata that will the history will repeats or there will be an emerge of a new champions.

After the dramatic win against the arch rivals, East Bengal is keen and confident to win in their 28th appearance in the IFA Shield final. But, Prayag should not be neglected at all as they had defeated the strong Coatarican side Depotipo Saprissa in the semifinal and showcased an impressive brand of soccer. The United SC had a history of creating some unpredictable incidences. One must not forget the incidence of the Durand semifinal in 2009 when Chirag United (new name United SC) defeated East Bengal by 1-0 to reach the final and the scorer was MD. RAFIQ..

Ranty Marins who had more than two hundred goals in India, is among the successful strikers in India and have the capability of scoring from in and outside the 18 yards. Md. Rafiq the scorer in the semifinal is a young talent and the Coastarican World cupper Carlos Hernandez is a danger man not only in the dead ball situations, but his accurate passing and Bullet Free kick should have to be taken care off.

United have an another foreigner, Kayne Vincent who has some remarkable record against United's Foreign team success in IFA Shield in recent two years as he scored the winning goal in last year IFA Shield Semi Final at Howrah Stadium against Botafogo to reach in the Final and this year also his 2nd goal ruled out Saprissa's dream to reach in the Final. Also remember his goal agianst East Bengal in last year's I-League match from Mehtab's corner and East Bengal keeper Gurpreet's irresponsible header action in United Box.

It has been noticed that the United SC deep defense is yet to be at it's best. The understanding and coordination between the defenders are negative in some occasions. United SC had played some memorable matches in I-League but there were a lots of up and downs of graphs in their performances.

In 2005 the team first reached in the Finals of IFA shield but lost to Bayern Munich-II by 1-5 then they also reached in the final in 2011-12 Shield but again thy lost to tomorrow's opponent East Bengal 2-4 through Tie Breaker. Now this will be their 3rd Final in the history of IFA shild. But It will the 5th Meeign of United and East Bengal in the history of IFA Shield as they first lost 2003 to them 0-2, then in 2005 the took revnge by beating East Bengal 2-1 and also in 2009 IFA Shield they beat East Bengal 4-2 and again they lost in the Final last year by 2-4 in tiebreaker. So The Rivalry results is 2-2.

2003 : East Bengal 2-0 United SC ----- W

East Bengal is the most constructive team now as far as the Indian teams are concerned. The management are capable of retaining the almost same team for last three years and this has reflected truly in their performances. Moreover the second line up of the red and gold is equally strong.

Above all the match reading and football scene of Trevor James Morgan should be talked off. In fact Morgan is the most successful coach in India in the recent times, who almost all the tournaments except the I-league which his team is still standing as top of the League table after 20 Round. He is still unbeaten in 16 matches so far where he won 14 and Drew 2 matches.

The only thing which will go against East Bengal is the exhaustion due to their busy match schedule in India and abroad. The red and gold brigade should convert the opportunities otherwise they may have to face the incidences of the semifinal.

But East Bengal have an advantage tomorrow as the team won the Group stages match against United SC by the brace of their key striker Chidi Edeh 2-0. Chidi scored 26 goals so far East Bengal in the Season 2012-13.

Mr. Elco must have some different plan in his mind in the final. He has concentrated on passing football in the semifinal and Carlos Hernandez and Md Rafi played a different role. Carlos was just behind the two strikers and Rafi continuously changed the flanks and often helped the midfielders. The main challenge of Elco is to stop the passing football of Trevor Morgan and break the red and gold unit.

The 2nd semi-final of the 117th IFA Shield : Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal

JAYDIP DASGUPTA : 16.03.2013 : The second semifinal of the 117th IFA Shield will be contested between the two arch rivals of Indian football - East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. The winner will going to meet the Prayag United on the 20th March who won the first semi final against the Coastarican Club Depotivo Saprissa by a convincing margin of 2-1.

The defending champion East Bengal yesterday appealed to IFA to postponed the match. In a letter to the IFA Secretary the officials of the red and gold said that due to the busy schedule of matches in India and abroad the players are exhausted and they had returned from Vietnam in the early morning on Thursday. But the IFA secretary denied the issue and said that it is hardly possible to rearrange the date as the preparations are finalized for the derby.

Meanwhile, there is some good news for the mariners. Their injury list has shorten as Tolgey and Denson are now fit enough to be shortlisted in the final eleven. Though it is now the decision of the Moroccan coach Karim Bencharifa to finalize his team. In the last few matches Bagan has developed tremendously. The physical condition of the team are in a satisfactory condition.

KEB PROBABLE TOMORROW : Gurpreet, Khabra, Raju, Okpara, Soumik, Isfaq, Mehtab, Penn, Dika, Chidi, Robin.
MMB PROBABLE TOMORROW : Shilton, Nirmal, Eche, Mehrajuddin, Ibor, Jewel, Jacobs, Denson, Manish Jr., Sabeeth, Odafa
REFEREE Probable : MB Santosh Kumar (Kerala), Ajith Metei (Manipur), S.S.Pande (Orisa), Samar Pal (Bengal).

But, the improvement which was observed - the deep defense headed by Iche has gain confidence and the that has been reflected in the last few matches. Mohan Bagan is now concentrating on small passes rather than the over head lobes and the relation and cohesion between the players has improved. Moreover the inclusion of Quinton Jacob in the mid field has yielded results.

In spite of these changes Karim will have to depend on his goal machine Odafa, who has the capability of changing the drama by his individual brilliance. He is indeed the most dangerous man in or outside the 18 yards. The young man from Kerala C.S.Sabeeth are among the goals and this young man can keep himself cool while converting within the penalty area. Tolgey is now fit for the derby and It is entirely the decision of Karim to select his final eleven.

The defending champions East Bengal are within their winning note as they had won all their matches in the Group A.They are leading the I league and the CFL table. The passing football of the red and gold are their main strength. The primary task of the rock solid deep defense of East Bengal is to check the sheer speed of Odafa and should not allow any him to be active within the 18 yards. The midfield of East Bengal will depend on the midfield marshal Mehtab Hossian, who will be operating from the deep and he usually passes the ball in both the flanks.

The danger man in the red and Goal Brigade mid field is Penn Orgi who plays a number of passes in the middle third area and often operates with his sheer speed. In fact it has been observed that Trevor James Morgan is successful in building the team as a unit. Cheddi Eddeh has a brilliant record of scoring four goals against East Bengal in a match but yet to score against the mariners dawning the red and gold jersey. Should he be successful in scoring against Bagan in the derby in Sunday evening?

This derby has been always been a match of nerves right from it's beginning. The fever is increasing within minutes and it is expected that Vivekananda Yubabharati Kriannangan will almost be a full house tomorrow. Who will be the winner ? The team who control his nerves and utilize the opportunities, or the team game of Morgan and the individual brilliance Karim.

Though the Indian purple brigade has had a good season, but it seems that they are lacking from a team combination which had been proved in several outings.

The Prayag team will have to depend on the experienced Dipak Mondal who is guiding the entire Prayag team. The midfeild should have to be productive in fetching the up front especially to Ranty Martins who can create danger within the 18 yards.

Carlos Hernandes the world cupper Coastarican of Prayag is a man who can mastermind the final passes in the middle third and is successful in converting the dead ball situation. Elco Satory the Dutch coach of Prayag must have some plan in his mind in utilizing Carlos in order to enter the final for the second successive time.

Depotive Saprissa has primarily send their junior team along with the experienced World cuppers in the IFA Shield. Deptivo locked at goalless in their 1st match against the Pune FC. But in the 2nd match against Mohun Bagan they performed and showcased an improvised example of passing football and won by a solitary goal scored by Walter from a dead ball situation.

The deep defense of Saprissa is rock solid headed by Alanso Sanches as they are successful in blocking the in form Odafa Okilie. The wing half's had utilized the open spaces and sends a number of passes or centers inside the Mohan Bagan danger zone.

It has been noticed that Saprissa has the variations while attacking, playing a number of short passes between themselves and increases the number of their footballers in the middle third with sheer speed. Saprissa are now handicapped with thier goalkeeper Douglas who was seriously injured and lost his sense during their second match against the mariners. In the semi final the team management of Saprissa has planned to depute three of their World cuppers.
