PFC PRESS RELEASE : Last-year's runners-up Pune FC began their 2013-14 I-League campaign with a bang registering a comfortable 3-1 victory over Mohammedan Sporting at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday. Striker Josimar Martins (11th minute) gave recently-crowned Durand Cup champions Mohammedan the lead before Pune FC's debutants striker Raul Fabiani (16th and 76th) and winger James Meyer (53rd) put their handed Pune FC all three points.

Pune FC however played the last quarter of the game with 10-men after Fabiani received his second booking. With this win Pune FC go top of the table provisionally with three points from one game ahead of Salgaocar FC on goal difference after opening day of Round 1.

After initial attacks by both sides, Pune FC custodian Amrinder Singh's miss handed Josimar the opportunity to give Mohammedan the lead in the 11th minute. Five minutes later, it was Pune FC who equalised through debutant Fabiani. Winger Nikhil Kadam, starting for the first time, saw his powerful attempt come off the post and fall for Fabiani who tapped in.

Thereafter, both teams engaged in a midfield battle but failed to create a close chance; going into the break tied at 1-1. The second half exploded to life eight minutes after kick off, when another debutant Meyer gave Pune FC the lead. Striker Fabiani beat two defenders on the right and set up an easy tap in for Meyer who made no mistake.

The game turned into a physical battle as Mohammedan began employing rough tackles. However it was Pune FC who increased their lead midway through the second half. Fabiani capitalised on a loose ball to slot it past the helpless Mohammedan custodian to complete his brace. But his dream debut was cut short when he celebrated the goal by pulling his shirt over his head. This earned him a second yellow of the match ruling him out for the next game.

Ten-man Pune FC thereafter did well to hold on to their advantage and end up with all three points.

MFC PRESS RELEASE : Mumbai FC was held to a 1-1 draw by Sporting Clube de Goa in their opening game of the I-League 2013-14 at the Shree Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex, Mhalunge-Balewadi in Pune on Saturday. A first-half injury time strike by winger John Coutinho (45+1st Minute) gave Mumbai FC the lead before a second half penalty from substitute Kalu Ogba (77th) saw both teams share the spoils.

With this draw both teams earn a point each and stay joint 3rd in the table. The hosts sustained a lot of attacks from Sporting in the opening exchanges before taking the time to settle.

Sporting, in the meantime, created the first chance at the half-hour mark through striker Boima Karpeh. His shot on the volley from inside the box was saved brilliantly by Mumbai FC custodian Kunal Sawant who did well to stretch and push the ball onto the vertical and deny a certain goal. Earlier too, Sawant did well pulling off back-to-back saves to Sporting at bay.

However it was the hosts who took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Kamaljeet Kumar's cross in from the left saw Coutinho, ahead of Sporting defender Rovan Pereira, control and smash home an angular grounder from the edge of the box to send the home fans into frenzy. Mumbai FC took their one goal advantage into the break.

The second half saw both teams come out of their shell and move forward. After a few half chances at either end, Sporting finally managed to equalise midway through the second half. Mumbai FC's defender Ritesh Perambra brought down Karpeh inside the box and the referee wasted no time in pointing to the spot. Substitute Ogba on for playmaker Pratesh Shirodkar stepped up and slotted home the equalizer.

The final quarter saw the hosts push ahead in search of the winner, but were denied by some last-ditch defending by Sporting.

Churchill Press Release : After the colourful opening ceremony which was attended by the Governor of Goa, Bharat Vir Wanchoo, It was back to football at the packed Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Saturday. The opening game of the I-league in Goa did not provide extreme entertainment but an exhibition of wait and watch football, It was Salgaocar's day and they had the last laugh thanks to the lucky goal scored by Darryl Duffy in the 41st min.

First half started off in a slow note with both the teams playing wait and watch game until the 8th min when Rahul Kumar of SFC blasted his free kick way over the bar. Then Salgaocar picked up their game and created many chances to score as Churchill was playing deep and looking for counters. Then in the 27th min Salgaocar's Clifton took a long ranger which flew just wide of the Churchill's post. Darryl Duffy Salgaocar's Scottish striker scored the match winning goal in the 41st min when he took advantage of a fumble by the Churchill Goalkeeper, just in front of the goal and slotted home. Halftime scored stood 0-1 in favour of Salgaocar.

Second Half started with Salgaocar having the lead and again they started off well and Duffy again headed just wide, a cross which he had received from the right. Lenny Rodrigues who was not playing to his potential got a shooting opportunity but his shot went just wide from the left. Jaison Vales had provided the assist. Then Churchill Brothers started to play well and Micky Fernandes took a crack at the goal in the 70th minute but SFC goalkeeper handled it well.

In the last quarter the pace of the game picked up with both the teams playing attacking football which turned a bit physical too with at least couple of yellow cards being shown by the Referee. In the last 10 minutes Churchill Brothers new Asian quota signing Ahmad Al Kaddour was introduced in attack but he could not make much of an impact as this was his very first game in the Indian soil.

Churchill Brothers need to pull up their socks and come up with a better performance in the next game against Mohun Bagan.
