MATCH REPORT : Mohammedan Sporting Club are now at the bottom of the I league table are on the threatened of relegation. At Kolkata today despite of a fighting performance with ten men they lost to Shillong Lajong by a margin of 4-5 make their job much harder in their last match on the 27th at Pune.

Mohammedan were down to ten men at the early stages of the match when Luis Barreto was shown a straight red card by Referee Rahul DSA for bringing down Boithang Haokip in the box. Cornell Glen leveled the match from a spot kick. Mohammedan earlier scored through Ashim Biswas in the 5th minute following a powerful shot from inside the 18 yards. At the half time Lajong were leading by 3-2 as Subash Singh and Cornell Glen scored for lazong while Penn Orji equalized for Mohammedan.

Sanjoy Sen's side restored parity just two minutes after the restart as Joshimar latched on to a long ball from the back and scored with a powerful finish. Despite being down to ten, Mohammedan had all the momentum but were wasteful as Josimar missed an easiest opportunity and Luciano, who failed to convert a penalty .

Shillong Lajong utilized the situation and increased the tally in their favor when Min-Chol-Son flicked on Ulliams's free kick for Subhash, who volleyed home his second of the game. A few minutes later Glen completed his hattrick by scoring from a corner from the left. Shillong Lajong FC are now escalated at the fifth position in the I-League table with 32 points from 22 matches while Mohamedan Sporting are at 21 points from 23 matches, will play against Mumbai FC in their last match. It will be not only a uphill task for the Black Panthers but they have to depend on the results of the other matches, so that if they can avoid the relegation.

Both sides were attacking well and looking to score the important goal before half time and it was Lajong who took the chance after a superb cross by Robin Gurung found striker Cornell Glen who volleyed the shot to give Lajong the lead again in the 43rd minute. The first half ended 2-3 in favour of the visiting team.

Mohammedan Sporting started the second half with greater determination as they equalised immediately through Josimar's goal in the 46th minute. The home team were surprisingly enjoying more possession of the goal even with ten players only and created a couple of good chances but could not convert few of their one on one chances. Then in the 60th minute, Mohammedan Sporting was awarded a penalty after a foul from a Lajong defender inside the penalty box.

Captain, Luciano stepped up to take then penalty but could not give his side the lead as Lalthuammawia Ralte guessed right and saved the penalty. This boosted the confidence of the Lajong players and Thangboi Singto's men pressed hard to get back into the game. Their efforts were later rewarded when Minchol Son placed the ball very well for Subash Singh to give his side the lead in the 69th minute with a thunderous strike. Lajong did not back down as Cornell Glen completed his hat trick in the 74th minute after a good delivery from Uilliams to double the lead for Lajong.

Many may not have expected the game to be a high scoring encounter as the action resumed, when Josimar scored his brace in the 79th minute to give his side some hope with ten minutes left to play. Lajong however stayed focussed till the end to secure three points and Mohammedan Sporting were left ruing their chances as the game ended 4-5. With this win Lajong are now fifth in the table with 32 points and will play their next match against Rangdajied United FC on the 21st April in the second leg of the Shillong Derby. 15.4.2014: SLFC PRESS RELEASE : PREVIEW : Shillong Lajong FC will face Mohammedan Sporting on Wednesday as a crucial I-League match awaits the teams at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata at 3:00pm. Thangboi Singto and his men wi ll be looking to do a double over Mohammedan Sporting, as the two teams previously met in November last year with Lajong winning by a scoreline of 2-1.

The Reds are in the seventh position with 29 points and are heading into this match after a 2-1 defeat at home to Mumbai FC on the 30th of March. But the team will put this behind them and go all out for tomorrow’s match and settle for nothing less than a win as three points will spring them up to 5th position.

Meanwhile, Mohammedan Sporting who have been struggling at the bottom throughout this season are placed in the 12th position with 21 points. However, the Black Panthers will look to make full use of the home advantage more so the squad is now boosted with a lot of confidence after they registered a 2-1 win over Rangdajied United on Sunday.

Head Coach of Shillong Lajong FC Thangboi Singto wants to finish the League strongly and tomorrow will no doubt be a very crucial game for the Reds. He said, “The loss to Mumbai FC should be a motivating factor for the players to play well and get a good result against Mohammedan Sporting. We need to play as a Team in order to get a positive result.”
