.. JAYDIP DASGUPTA : The knockout stages of the 35th Fedaration Cup football tournament will going to commence from the middle of the coming week at Cochin. The second round of the group league stages are over and the most important and crucial 3rd round will going to finalize the teams for the semifinals. Apart from the I league playing clubs two teams from the second division Bhawnipur Club of Kolkata and Eagles FC from Kerala are qualified to play along with the top sedded team of the country.

The defending champions of the I league Churchill Brothers of Goa are already ahead to reach the semifinal. Churchill are in the bottom of the I league table have selected the Fedaration Cup to bounce back. In the group league stages Churchill won both the matches against United Sports and Eagles FC by an identical margin of 2-1 and are leading the table from Group A with 6 points. The second seeded team in the Group United Sports of Kolkata will play their last match against Eagles FC.

A win in the last match will bring some hopes of United Sports to reach the semi final. But Churchill needs a point only in their last match against Pune to qualify which is rather a easy task now for the Goan team.

The defending champions East Bengal are almost out of the tournament as they are bottom of the table with a point. Though still some calculations are there for the hopes of Red and Gold. Bangaluru Fc are leading the Group B table at the end of the second round with 4 points.

In the last match on the 21st East Bengal must win against Bangaluru by 2 goals and If the match between Sporting Goa and Rangdazied United ends in a draw then there is a chance of East Bengal to qualify with a goal average of +1, which is indeed a tough task at this stage of the tournament. East Bengal played the finals of the Fedaration Cup thrice in Trevor Morganís era and were successfull in winning the crown twice. So it can be said that the 3rd round of matches on Tuesday evening at Manjari will be of utmost importance to decide the champions of Group B.

Mohun Bagan is leading the table in Group C winning both the matches and are among the probable to qualify for a semi final berth. An improvised performance by the Mariners in the Fedaration Cup in all department make them among the probable champions. After a long time Mohan Bagan is performing as a team and are not depending on individual brillance. Mohun Bagan needs a point in their third and the last Group league match against Salgaokar to reach the semifinal.

But if Salgaokar wins then the equation would be different. Though mohun Bagan are having a better goal average than Salgaokar. The last match of the Group D between Dempo Sports Club and Mohammedhan Sporting will be a decisive one as both the teams are locked at 6 points.

Mohammedhan SC won both their ist and 2nd round matches agaist United Sikkim and Bhawnipur while Dempo overcame the barrier of Bhawnipur and United Sikkim. Dempo are having a slight edge over Mohammedhan as because of the better goal average, but it may be presumed that both the teams will play for a direct victory to qualify for the semifinal. So, there will be a lot of calculations in the coming week to decide the teams of the knockout stages of the 35th Fedaration Cup.

PFC PRESS RELEASE : Pune FC hope to end their Federation Cup 2014 campaign on a high when they face Churchill Brothers SC in the last group game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi on Monday. The clash will be the first time both teams meet in any competition outside the I-League.

After a draw and a loss in their opening two rounds, Pune FC's hopes of making it to the next round faded away and a win on the morrow will give them confidence ahead of their all-important AFC Champions League Play-Off clash in Pune later this month. On the other hand, Churchill Brothers have all but qualified for the knockout stage with two consecutive wins over United SC and Eagles FC in the opening two rounds.

Churchill Brothers had been in poor form coming into the tournament lying at the very bottom of the league table. However, the mid-season break has done wonders for the I-League defending champions who have been the in-form team in Group-A topping the table.

New-signings striker Anthony Wolfe (Trinidad and Tobago's World-Cupper) and Egyptian attacker Abdelhamid Shabana have been in great form for the Goans. Shabana has scored two out of Churchill's four goals while clubís top-scorer Balwant Singh has chipped in with the other two.

Coach Mike Snoei will hope for a better performance from his team after two disappointing results leaving the team winless in eight games. However, the team will take confidence from the fact that the last time these two teams met, Pune FC came out on top thanks to a Calum Angus goal in Balewadi.

Over the years, both teams have faced each other nine times in the I-League. With either side wining four times, a win on the morrow will give Pune FC an edge in the head-to-head.
