Keeper Gurpreet Singh made history for Indian Football
26.04.2016 : Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Creates History, Becomes First Indian Footballer To Lead European Top Division Team.Punjab lad, former East Bengal and Pailan arrows keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is the becoming the first Indian footballer to lead a European club Norwegian Tippeligaen club Stabaek FC. The 24 year old Indian Keeper Gurpreet was chosen to lead for his club Norwegian Tippeligaen club Stabaek FC. He led the club’s reserve side Stabaek IF II to a 2-0 victory over FK Senja Silsand on 24th April 2016.
Sandhu's debut as goalkeeper for Norwegian club Stabaek in NM Cup 2015 on 22nd april 2015 agaist Runar IL under coach Bob Bradlly where his team won 6-0. He played full time but unable to get chance in first eleven in next 5 matches upto semi final. In the League Competition 2014-15 Gurpreet was in reserve in all 30 games. In the year 2015-16 out of 7 matches played so far in top division, Gurpreet was in reserve.
The young keeper signed in Norwegian Tippeligaen club Stabaek FC August 2014. The keeper of Champion India Sr. team in SAFF 2015-16, Gurpreet also choosen in FPAI Fans player of the year which won by Mohun Bagan Keeper Debjit Majumder last night.
He is the fifth Indian player to play in Europe after Mohammed Salim (Celtic FC, Scotland, 1936), Baichung Bhutia (Bury FC, England, 1999-2002 Perak FA, Malaysia, 2003 Selangor MK Land, Malaysia, 2005) , Sunil Chhetri (Sporting Kansas City, US, 2010; Sporting Clube de Portugal, Portugal, 2012-13 ) Subrata Paul (FC Vestsjaelland, Denmark, 2014), Romeo Fernandes ( Atlético Paranaense-Brazil)
