ISL PRESS RELEASE : Chennaiyin FC reached their second Hero Indian Super League final in three years as they outsmarted FC Goa 3-0 (4-1 aggregate) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, on Tuesday.

The tie was evenly poised after the first leg ended 1-1 but a brace from Jeje Lalpekhlua (26 and 90 minutes) and one goal from Dhanpal Ganesh (29 minutes) was enough for Chennaiyin FC to seal a place in the final. They will now clash with Bengaluru FC at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, on Saturday.

Jeje could have easily had a hat-trick but missed a handful of chances. However, when it mattered most, he put the ball in the back of the net as Chennaiyin turned a stunning first half on its head by scoring two goals in quick succession completely against the run of play.

For the first 21 minutes, it was all FC Goa. The visitors were incredible in attack and produced a flurry of chances. Mandar Rao Dessai and Narayan Das combined to send in a stinging cross across the face of goal which Jerry Lalrinzuala almost turned into his own net.

Chennaiyin goalkeeper Karanjit Singh was the busiest man on the pitch in this period where Goa sent waves towards goal. Hugo Boumous played in Mandar soon after and his shot went in off the inside of Karanjit's thigh and eventually out of play. Karanjit was at it again when he made a stunning save to deny Manuel Lanzarote from a powerfully driven freekick.

Goa's attacker in chief started creating more problems when he sent in a cross from the right to find Chinglensena Singh’s head, but the impending attempt on goal soared over the bar.

Chennaiyin finally produced something of meaning when Gregory Nelson's super pass was met by Jeje's header, but it was wayward. Just minutes later, he would score though - it was Nelson's ball again, and Chennaiyin's striker didn't make any mistake from point-blank range with his head.

The home side doubled their lead even before Goa could breathe. Nelson sent in a lovely cross again and it was met by Dhanpal Ganesh, whose glancing header was enough to beat Naveen Kumar.

Raphael Augusto started turning on the heat with some magical skills and almost scored after ghosting past two Goa defenders only to shoot straight at the keeper. The last chance of the half fell to Goa, when Mandar dummied past Ganesh, only to see his shot saved by the fingertips of Karanjit.

Augusto, who ran the show with his graceful play, fired a warning shot seconds into the second half when he shot over from distance. Chennaiyin were pretty much in control in the latter half of the match, maintaining intensity in attack but keeping spaces tight at the back. Jeje could've put serious daylight between the two sides in the 65th minute but his lob over the keeper didn't go in after a finely timed run.

Goa couldn't fancy any chances as the match petered out, but it was Jeje again who could've sealed the match but his scissor-snapshot was loose and high as he attempted the half-volley. Minutes later, he capitalised on a defensive error and produced a fine finish to end Goa's chances.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Chhetri does the trick as BFC seal final spot

Bengaluru, March 11:Bengaluru FC kept their date with history as they outclassed FC Pune City 3-1 and booked a place in the final of the Hero Indian Super League at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, on Sunday.

After a goalless away draw, Bengaluru FC needed to score if they were to move to the final which will be played at their home in Bengaluru on March 17. The man who measured up to the challenge was their captain Sunil Chhetri, who struck a brilliant hat-trick and showed why he is India’s best footballer by some distance.

Chhetri’s first goal in the 15th minute was a lucky one as Pune City’s defence made a mess of a routine header, but his second was a result of his class and confidence. It came from a penalty in the 65th minute which he had himself won, and it was the manner in which he scored that showed his class. A confident Chhetri simply chipped the ball over goalkeeper Vishal Kaith and scored with a style first made famous by Czech player Antonin Panenka during the Euros in 1976.

Pune City made things interesting when substitute Jonatan Lucca scored from a free-kick in the 82nd minute but Chhetri’s class was on show again as he completed his hat-trick with a minute of regulation time left to be played.

Bengaluru FC will now meet the winners of the second semi-final between FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC for the final showdown on Saturday. Coming into this game, Pune needed only a goal to make things complicated for the hosts. They didn’t seem far off as they took the game to the opposition but lacked the final touch that would have given them a precious away goal.

Uruguayan striker Emiliano Alfaro came closest to finding their opening goal. On three occasions, he missed heading the ball by a whisker with only goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh to beat. The BFC goalkeeper didn’t have to do much throughout the game apart from a good reflex save early in the game.

Bengaluru calmed early nerves with the opening goal in the 15th minute. It was the captain who started it all, combining perfectly with Udanta Singh. From a counter, Chhetri did well to hold play and spray it to Udanta on the right. The winger got near the box and crossed at the far post where Chhetri’s header towards goal saw Vishal and defender Gurtej Singh collide, allowing the ball to roll into the net.

Chhetri’s second came in the second half as he drew a foul inside the box from Sarthak Golui, who first tackled him from behind and then pushed to the ground. Chhetri himself stepped up to take the resultant penalty and surprised the keeper with a calm and composed Panenka.

The Sree Kanteerava Stadium erupted in joy at Chhetri’s antics but there was late drama when Lucca’s beautiful free-kick from just outside the box beat a diving Gurpreet and brought the contest back to life.

Another goal from Pune and that would have broken the blue hearts at Kanteerava and their captain proved to be the saviour again as Chhetri punished their rivals who had pushed ahead and left gaps behind.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Chennaiyin FC scored an important away goal as they played a 1-1 draw against FC Goa in the first leg of the second semi-final of the Hero Indian Super League at the Fat0rda here on Saturday. Both the two teams now play the second leg in three days time with Chennai holding the edge to make it to the final.

Manuel Lanzarote gave the home side the lead in the 64th minute of the game but his strike was cancelled out by Anirudh Thapa just seven minutes later to give Chennaiyin FC the important away goal which could prove vital in the return leg.

As expected, both teams went for it for the first whistle. While the home side started the game on the front foot with some early crosses into the box, it didn't take Chennaiyin FC too long to grow into this all-important clash. Mandar Rao Desai, who had an excellent first half for Goa created some good opportunities for his team in the first half. The only thing missing from him and Goa was a goal.

At the other end, Chennaiyin FC had a few opening of their own. In the 20th minute, Jerry Lalrinzuala put in a tantalising ball in for his forwards to attack but they lack the same urgency.

The deadlock on the night was finally broken in the second half by FC Goa and Mandar was again heavily involved in the move. In the 64th minutes after making a darting run down the flank, he squared the ball for Coro to have a strike on goal. The Spaniard's effort was stopped by Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Karanjit Singh, however, the ball fell straight to Lanzarote and he put the ball into the net to hand his side the lead.

FC Goa were still celebrating the goal when seven minutes later substitute Anirudh Thapa's low driven shot brought Chennaiyin FC back in the game. In the 71st minute, Gregory Nelson started the move with a ball for Thapa through the centre. The substitute took a touch and before firing in a low shot between the legs of FC Goa goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani.

The home side tried to crave another opportunity in the time that remained by patiently moving the ball around the field but Chennaiyin FC defended well to take home a precious away goal.
