ISL PRESS RELEASE : S A Moudou Sougou hat-trick was enough for Mumbai City FC to drub ATK 3-1 and confirm a spot in the Hero Indian Super League playoffs at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium here on Friday. After three matches without a goal, Modou Sougou (26’, 39’, 60’) returned to the scoresheet with an excellent performance. Andre Bikey headed in a consolation in the 67th minute, but the hosts could not find a way back into the game and are now out of the reckoning.

The win takes Mumbai to the third spot on the table with 30 points while ATK remain sixth. A midfield battle ensued in the first half as both teams looked to keep possession of the ball. ATK started the half well but Mumbai soon stamped their authority, showing efficiency in the attacking third. Pranjal Bhumij skipped past his marker on the left flank and crossed into the centre for Sougou in the 21st minute. The Senegalese’s first touch took Arnab Mondal out of the equation, but Andre Bikey tackled the ball off his feet before the striker could find the net from close-range.

However, Sougou managed to get the better of the ATK defence in the 26th minute. Paulo Machado won the ball in Mumbai’s half and initiated a counter-attack from the right. Bhumij received the ball forward and lobbed it behind the ATK defenders to find Sougou’s run into the box and the striker placed the ball into the net past Arindam Bhattacharya.

Mumbai hit ATK with an incisive counter-attack yet again. Edu Garcia gave the ball away outside the Mumbai box and Souvik Chakrabarty released Issoko down the right flank in the 39th minute. The winger found Sougou in the center of the box with a delightful cross and the forward made no mistake from close-range to double Mumbai’s lead.

ATK went close just before the break. Mumbai custodian Amrinder Singh was forced to pull off a finger-tip save to parry away Kalu Uche’s shot from inside the box.Uche had another chance but failed to beat Amrinder from close-range and allowed the defence to clear. At the hour-mark, Paulo Machado released Sougou in behind the ATK defence and the Senegalese striker scored his 12th goal of the season with an emphatic finish to put the ball beyond the reach of Arindam.

ATK pushed players forward in search of a way back into the game. Pritam Kotal delivered a good cross into the centre of the box and Bikey’s powerful header found the net in the 67th minute. With no end product to show for their efforts, the hosts succumbed to a defeat at the hand of an efficient Mumbai who converted their chances.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : ATK boosted their chances of landing a top-four finish with a dominant performance to outsmart Jamshedpur FC 2-1 in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on Sunday. Two brilliant first-half free-kicks by Manuel Lanzarote in the third and 33rd minute sealed three points for Steve Coppell’s men. Mario Arques headed in a consolation goal for Jamshedpur in the 82nd minute for the visitors.

The Kolkata-based team moved to the fifth place in the standings with a head-to-head advantage over Jamshedpur. Both teams are tied on 20 points from 14 matches. The hosts struck an early blow when Dhanachandra Singh’s mistimed tackle brought Edu Garcia’s dribble to a halt on the edge of the box in the third minute. Manuel Lanzarote’s excellent free-kick beat the wall and a diving goalkeeper Subrata Paul as it flew into the bottom right corner of the net.

The match turned into a cagey affair as the first half wore on with ATK prepared to sit back and counter-attack and Jamshedpur unable to penetrate the hosts’ backline. Lanzarote had another chance from a free-kick in the 16th minute. The Spaniard aimed for the same corner as he did for his goal but Paul managed to tip the ball away.

In response, Jamshedpur tried to threaten from wide areas. Memo found Farukh Choudhary’s run down the right flank but the winger’s drilled return to the midfielder was cleared for a corner by an alert Arnab Mondal. Pratik Choudhary directed a free header over the bar from the resulting corner-kick.Edu Garcia and Lanzarote combined to produce a feeling of déjà vu for ATK and double the lead in the 33rd minute. Similar to the opening goal, Dhanachandra stopped Edu Garcia’s dart by bringing him down on the edge of the box and Lanzarote found the top right corner with a stunning free-kick.

Lanzarote had a free role in the attacking third and Jamshedpur struggled to contain the threat emanating from the ATK midfield. The Spaniard’s dangerous ball in behind the defence for Everton Santos was smothered by Subrata before the striker could get to it. Minutes later, Lanzarote delivered a finesse effort on target, with the goalkeeper making a save this time.

The visitors went close in the 81st minute. Bikash Jairu’s chip towards the far post was met by Jerry Mawhmingthanga but his close-range effort was denied by the crossbar. Jamshedpur managed to pull a goal back a minute later through Arques. A short corner-kick was sent to the near post by Jairu and an unmarked Arques leapt the highest to head in

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Bengaluru FC dealt a major blow to ATK’s top four ambitions after beating them 1-0 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Thursday. The result also saw Bengaluru extend their unbeaten run in Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2018-19 to 11. Erik Paartalu scored with a glancing header to give Bengaluru the lead on the 37th minute. Balwant Singh missed two big opportunities to score the equaliser in the second-half. The win takes the Blues six points clear at the top of the table.

The match got off to a breathless start, with some end to end action on offer for the fans. Both teams used the wings well to create some dangerous openings. Bengaluru had an early crack at goal through Sunil Chhetri, but his shot went harmlessly wide. The match showed no signs of slowing down even after the first 15 minutes. There was a lot happening on the pitch and Bengaluru had two penalty claims turned down in quick succession.

As the match progressed, the home team slowly took control. The Blues looked the likeliest to score the first goal of the match, and they did. On the 37th minute, Erik Paartalu leapt high to meet Kean Lewis' sublime cross and put his glancing header past Arindam Bhattacharja in the ATK goal. The home team was firmly in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the first-half and went into the break with the one-goal advantage. ATK began the second-half on the front foot and put some early pressure on the Bengaluru defence. The Blues managed to successfully see off the dangerous phase and then slowed the game down to take the sting out of the ATK attackers.

Despite not creating much through open play, ATK found a golden opportunity to draw things level on the 57th minute through a set piece. Balwant timed his run well to beat Bengaluru's offside trap and latched onto Manuel Lanzarote's free kick. With just Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to beat, the ATK striker couldn't keep his head and blasted his shot over the bar. Ten minutes later, Balwant found himself face to face with Gurpreet yet again after John Johnson played him through with an exquisite long ball from the deep. But his shot missed the far post by inches and the chance went begging.

The otherwise edgy second-half suddenly opened up after the 70th minute and either team could have scored the all-important second goal of the match. Udanta Singh shot wide of the mark for Bengaluru while ATK’s Everton Santos failed to hit the target from a favourable position. ATK head coach Steve Coppell threw caution to the wind and introduced Komal Thatal and Australian striker Eli Babalj in the fray to find a late elusive equaliser. The away team threw bodies forward in the final minutes of the match but relied heavily on long aerial balls, which were dealt with easily by Bengaluru’s Juanan and Albert Serran. The lack of a recognized striker was evident for ATK as their attacks fizzled out consistently in the final third.

The home team could have put the match to bed in stoppage time. Chhetri seemed favourite to score after rounding up Arindam. The Bengaluru captain’s shot from a tight angle, however, fizzed harmlessly across the face of the goal. The miss counted for little though, as Bengaluru held on to secure the three points.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : NorthEast United FC seem to have forgotten the art of turning difficult matches in their favour after playing out their third consecutive draw in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). After draws against Jamshedpur FC and Bengaluru FC, where they led till the closing stages of the game, NorthEast United were forced to share the spoils again, this time against ATK at the Indira Gandhi Athletic stadium here on Saturday.

NorthEast United have scored only one goal in their last three games but the point gained saw them reclaim the second spot with 20 points from 11 games. ATK are still sixth with 16 points from 11 matches. The match got off to a sedate start as neither team found any sort of rhythm in attack. Though the home side saw more of the ball in the opening exchanges, they were unable to trouble the ATK defence which looked compact.

The first attempt on goal came in the 21st minute when Redeem Tlang showed good change of pace to work some space to shoot. However, his grounder was collected by an alert Arindam Bhattacharya in the ATK goal. After a period of midfield slugfest, ATK forced their first chance when Everton Santos played in Balwant Singh with a shrewd lob but the Indian striker hit it straight at NorthEast goalkeeper Pawan Kumar.

The sloppy nature of the match continued for the rest of the half but the hosts were dealt a blow on the stroke of half-time when defender Mislav Komorski was stretchered off injured. Coach Eelco Schattorie was forced to send in Gurwinder Singh instead. Just before the end of the half, ATK captain Manuel Lanzarote’s freekick looked set to be headed in by Hitesh Sharma but Keegan Perera made a crucial intervention to keep the scoreline intact. The slow-paced nature of the game continued in the second half as well with clear cut chances coming at a premium.

Even the substitutions made in the second half failed to provide the spark and the next real chance came in the 75th minute when Bartholomew Ogbeche unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box which went straight into the waiting hands of the ATK goalkeeper. ATK, however, did have a couple of good chances towards the end. Everton’s shot from close-range after a freekick from Noussair El Maimouni was blocked late in the game, and with a minute left to be played, Andre Bikey saw a header from a Maimouni corner cleared off the line by Gurwinder as the match wound to a draw.

ISL PRESS RELEASE : Chennai, December 2: Defending champions Chennaiyin FC may have been left with nothing to defend after ATK handed them a 3-2 defeat in the Hero Indian Super League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, on Sunday.

Chennaiyin, who were handed their seventh loss from 10 matches, have teams who are doing worse than them. FC Pune City and Delhi Dynamos are still below them but never before has a defending champion looked so out of sorts.

A screamer from former Chennaiyin FC winger Jayesh Rane (14’) gave ATK the lead which was cancelled out by Thoi Singh (24’). Manuel Lanzarote then converted two penalties in either half (44’, 78’) to make it 3-1, while Issac Vanmalsawma got a late consolation (88’) for Chennaiyin FC. The result took ATK to the fifth spot with 15 points, the same as Jamshedpur FC just ahead of them.

The match got off to an energetic start with both sides threatening early in the game. However, the scoring woes of both teams came to the fore as those chances were spurned. ATK, however, opened their account in the 14th minute when Hitesh Sharma found Rane in space down the middle. With nobody closing him down, Rane let fly a sumptuous strike from 30 yards out that whistled into the top corner.

ATK continued to test the Chennaiyin defence on occasions but the defending champions hit back in the 24th minute against the run of play. Issac did well to keep a ball alive near the byline before feeding Mailson Alves inside the box. The Brazilian laid it off to Thoi who sent an arrowing shot into the far corner to level scores.

ATK, though, kept on searching for a second goal and it came two minutes before the half-time whistle. Manuel Lanzarote did brilliantly to get to the byline and cut a pass back to Hitesh whose shot hit the arms of Eli Sabia. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which Lanzarote coolly converted.

As expected, ATK sat deep and focused on maintaining their defensive shape in the second-half. The pace of the game died down a bit but Chennaiyin did have an opportunity a few minutes before the hour mark. Issac picked out Jeje Lalpekhlua at the far post but the striker’s header from point-blank range was straight at Arindam Bhattacharya and Thoi could not turn in the rebound.

The home team kept pressing for an equaliser but were dealt a body blow in the 77th minute. A goal-mouth melee saw second-half substitute Carlos Salom use his hands to block a goal-bound ball. The referee awarded another penalty and booked Salom and Laldinliana Ralte for dissent. Up stepped Lanzarote who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way again to make it 3-1.

At the other end, the tale of wasted chances continued with Thoi Singh missing a sitter after Issac had picked him out with a cross. Issac bundled a Thoi Singh cross late on to spark some interest in the game but it was ultimately not to be as Chennaiyin’s title defence stands on the verge of a collapse.

ISL PRESS RELEASE: Two-time Hero Indian Super League (ISL) champions, ATK held free-scoring FC Goa to a goalless draw at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Wednesday. Both teams had enough chances to nick the tie, but neither were ruthless enough on the day. The point takes the Gaurs back to second in the table while ATK remain in sixth, two points off the final playoff spot.

ATK 0-0 FC GOA
Speaking at the post-match press conference, ATK boss Steve Coppell seemed unsure as to whether the result was a positive or negative one for his team in the long term. “I think time will give me the conclusion. For us to keep Goa quiet, they had two good chances early on when we were trying to get used to our formation and what we were trying to do. After that, I thought we had the more clear-cut opportunities. To keep Goa quiet is an achievement in itself but maybe, with time it might be points dropped rather than gained. Time will tell,” he said.

ATK did well to shackle Ferran Corominas by denying him any space or time to work with and Coppell valued the collective effort of his players. “Yes, they got really good players. The core of the team has been together for two seasons now and that familiarity is hard to achieve in a short space of time. From what we wanted to achieve, I think we did well. We kept Coro quiet. But he’s still always dangerous. He only needs one mistake, one lapse in concentration, and he takes advantage. So, that was a team achievement. But we have to start taking more opportunities ourselves. We are solid but now we need to be a little bit more expressive,” Coppell remarked.

Goa’s head coach, Sergio Lobera on the other hand felt that both sides had equal amount of chances to steal the win and hinted that the result was a fair one. “I think both teams had equally fair amount of open chances. I think the one that dropped to (Mourtada) Fall is quite a good chance. Towards the end as well a chance went begging for us... I think both teams had equal amount of open chances,” the Spaniard said.

Lobera also commented on Corominas’ struggle to cope with the physicality of the ATK defence. He felt the center forward did his best but was marked out by a combination of ATK players. “For me as a coach you play like that. If you analyze as a spectator, and because he didn’t score it might feel like he didn’t play well today. For me as a coach I think he played well for the team today. It’s very difficult to play against a team who put so many people of their own team in their half. Because as a forward when you receive the ball, there’s at least seven players around him. Today I think, ATK received what they wanted, which was a draw,” he said.

ISL MEDIA RELEASE: Mumbai City FC and ATK played out a goalless stalemate in a Hero Indian Super League (ISL) encounter at the Mumbai Football Arena here on Saturday.
MUMBAI CITY FC 0-0 ATK
In what turned out to be a lukewarm battle, neither team fashioned enough chances to deserve all three points and played out only the second goalless draw this season. The point gained sees Mumbai City and ATK remain at their respective positions in fourth and sixth respectively.
The first chance of the match fell for the visitors when Everton Santos got behind the Mumbai defence and pulled it back for Komal Thatal inside the box. However, the youngster miscued his shot altogether with only Amrinder Singh to beat in goal.

The home side saw a lot of the ball but struggled to create any openings. For ATK, Santos looked threatening each time he was on the ball. However, Mumbai did well defensively to thwart ATK from making inroads. For ATK, Ricky Lallawmawma ensured that the dangerous Arnold Issoko was kept under check as the Congolese hardly had any impact in the first half. It was a half where both teams were ineffective in the final third as neither goalkeeper was tested.

Mumbai City did come out with intent at the start of the second half and forced a couple of chances. In the 49th minute, Rafael Bastos found Paulo Machado after getting on the end of a cross from Issoko. But Machado’s effort was blocked away. Bastos then shot over from a promising position before Machado miscued his effort following a quick counter-attack.

The pace of the game slowed down as the half wore on as clear-cut chances came at a premium. In the 78th minute, Amrinder Singh was forced into action to keep out Manuel Lanzarote’s on-target free-kick. Subhasish Bose then called Arindam Bhattacharya into action with a belter from distance that the ATK goalkeeper had to parry over the bar.

Lanzarote was then left frustrated three minutes later after his appeals for a penalty after being taken down inside the box by Sehnaj Singh fell on deaf ears. But that was about it as far as chances went as the teams settled for a point.

ISL MEDIA RELEASE: ATK secured their first home win of the season after a 2-1 triumph over beleaguered Chennaiyin FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata, on Friday.
ATK 2-1 CHENNAIYIN FC
Nigerian hitman Kalu Uche (3’) and John Johnson (13’) put Steve Coppell’s side 2-0 up before Carlos Salom (17’) pulled one back for the defending champions. ATK, however, held out to hand Chennaiyin FC their fourth defeat of the season and climbed to the fourth spot on the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) table.

Chennaiyin FC got off to the worst possible start as a defensive mix-up saw them concede as early as the third minute. Chennaiyin goalkeeper Karanjit Singh’s goal-kick was headed back by Gerson Vieira. It fell to Uche who found himself clear of both the centre-backs and slotted a calm finish past the goalkeeper.

ATK assumed control of the match thereafter as Manuel Lanzarote started to show his quality on the ball. He threaded a delicious ball for Uche in the 11th minute but the Nigerian’s shot was straight at the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Johnson met his wonderful free-kick into the box and headed into the far corner to double ATK’s lead.

The setback forced the reigning champions into action and they pulled a goal back within five minutes through Salom. Francisco Fernandes’ accurate cross from the right wing was glanced into the net expertly by the Palestinian striker as coach John Gregory heaved a sigh of relief. Chennaiyin FC pressed for an equaliser and created several chances in the first half but failed to convert them. In an attempt to attack, they were leaving spaces behind for the likes of Lanzarote to exploit. However, ATK also could not capitalise on the offerings.

ATK looked a bit more compact at the start of the second half and Chennaiyin had to wait until the 56th minute to fashion a proper opportunity when Salom managed to dart into the box, only to see his rasping shot from close-range go well wide of Arindam Bhattacharya’s goal. The story of spurned chances continued for Chennaiyin FC as Andrea Orlandi saw a brilliant ball across the box just miss the outstretched legs of Salom and Issac Vanmalsawma.

At the other end, Lanzarote continued to threaten the Chennaiyin defence with his set-piece deliveries. One such effort saw Everton Santos send a header just over the bar. Second-half substitute Gregory Nelson could have rescued a point for the Marina Machans when Thoi Singh found him at the far post with a cross. But his header was parried away by an alert Bhattacharya.

KFC NEWS DESK: Two times champions ATK will going to face Kerala Blasters FC in the inargual match of the fifth edition of Indian Super League at Vivekananda Kriangan, Kolkata. ATK and Kerala Blasters, both had a torrid time in the last edition as Kolkata team finished nineth in a ten team competition. While Kerala Blasters finished sixth after having an unimpressive start.

ATK had an impressive record over Kerala Blasters, won five out of the six matches they played, Kerala Blasters managed to win a single match. ATK are confident for a smooth start and to regain their supremacy. The Kolkata team will going to start the season with several new recruits, many of them established performers in the ISL in the past. ATK included foreign players like Kalu Uche, Everton Santos, Gerson Vieira and Manuel Lanzarote. The team is now managed by a new coach Steve Coppell, who took Kerala Blasters to the final in 2016 and lost against ATK.

In the pre match press conference at Kolkata Steve Coppell said, "For the last two years, I might not have had those players that could give that something extra in the final third. This time we have Lanzarote, Everton, Kalu and Balwant who could do that with the ball. I will do my best to create them opportunities but it is all about balance in the team.”

ATK will miss the services of Kalu Uche as the Nigerian is yet to arrive in Kolkata, pending Visa, while their India recruit Arnab Mondal has been replaced by Sandeep Singh. Arnab will be out of action for 4 to 6 weeks due to knee ligament strain. Coppell is hoping that Andre Bikey will be fit before the match.

The former Liverpool goalkeeper David James is associated with Kerala Blasters since long. He played against ATK in some of the important matches and now will be in the dugout on Saturday evening. While answering to a question David James said, “Rivalry between Kerala and ATK is the biggest in ISL. Both teams have played two finals, close ones at that. Of course, ATK have the upperhand when it comes to dominance. Also, the fixture will have the biggest attendance figures in the league stage. The recruitment was important. We can get best players who are not particularly great people. We have recruited good players who were great for the team. I think the bonding over the pre-season has been very good.”

The opening game will see Kerala miss the services of India defender Anas Edathodika who is serving a three-match ban.Ugandan star Keziron Kizito and Ghanaian winger Courage Pekuson will be expected to provide support to the strikers. The match will kick off at 7.30 PM.
