Indian National Team lands in Kathmandu for SAFF Championship

27.08.2013: AIFF MEDIA RELEASE : 20-member Indian squad for the 2013 SAFF Championship landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Tuesday (August 27). The squad reached Kathmandu from Bangalore via a connecting flight from Kolkata.

The Indian Team was greeted by a temperature of 22 degrees with clouds hovering overhead. "It has been drizzling but we haven't had any torrential downpour in Kathmandu in the past few days," an Official who had come to receive the Indian contingent at the Airport, informed.

Captain Sunil Chhetri felt the Tournament is evenly balanced. "We are the defending champions but there isn't any room for any complacency. We will be sticking to the strategies and taking one match at a time," Chhetri told the horde of journalists at the Airport.

Striker Jeje Lalpekhlua sounded a cautious note. "I have been a part of the triumphant squad twice in 2009 in Dhaka and 2011 in New Delhi. I want to make it three in a row but it's not that easy. In fact, it's very tricky. There are strong hurdles which we have to overcome. We will give out best," he told www.the-aiff.com.

Goalkeeper Sandip Nandy added: "It was an excellent feeling to win the SAFF Football in 2005 in Pakistan. I'm looking forward to the Tournament. We head into this Championship from Bangalore where we had a fruitful Camp for 10 days. We need to implement on the field all of what we have practiced."

There wasn't any practice session slated for the Team on Tuesday (August 27) and the first practice session will only be held on Wednesday (August 28). Pakistan have been the first Team to arrive in Kathmandu on August 25 followed by Bangladesh and Bhutan the next day.

India play their first match against Pakistan on September 1. For the complete fixtures of the SAFF Championship, please click on http://www.the-aiff.com/upcoming-fixtures.htm?tnmt_id=17

INDIA (Samar Ishaq Og 14)   1-0   PAKISTAN (NEPAL - FT..)

IND : Subrata, Nirmal, Arnab, Gouramangi, N.Mohanraj (Nabi), Mehtab, Lenny, Fracis, Alwyn (Jewel), Jeje, Cheetri.

REPORT AND LIVE COMMENATRY (BELOW) : JAYDIP DASGUPTA : India registered their first victory in the SAF Cup at Katmandu today defeating Pakistan by a solitary goal.India advances in the 14th minute of the first session, though they had a torrid time in front of the continuous Pakistani attack. In fact it was the golden hand of the Indian custodian Subrata Paul which saved the Indian citadel in a number of occasion. The Pakistanis created danger in Indian goal in the 35th, 41st and in the 44th minute when they can score.

Subrata proved his excellence and saved three shots form Md Adil, Md Riaz and Hassan Basir. Pakistan choose the weakest channel in the Indian deep defense and continuously attacked through the left side. Mohanraj was slow are had no answer to give in front of the Pakistani attacks. It was quite surprising to see that why the Indian coach opted to choose Mohan raj keeping the experienced Sayed Rahim Nabi in the dug out.

India scored the all important goal in the 14th minute, when a long pass from Nirmal Chetri aiming for Allwyn Goerge was defected off the Pakistani defender Samar Isaq and went inside. At that time The Pakistani goalkeeper Yusuf Batt was not under the frame work.

Pakistan continued their attack in the 2nd half desperately looking for the equalizer and the deep defense of India was under pressure. But the inclusion of Nabi in the 62ndminute yield result. The deep defense of India look solid and the overlap of Nabi pushed back the Pakistanis in their defense.Sunil Chetri was unlucky as his shot was saved by the Pakistani goalkeeper Yusuf Batt twice.

In the 74th minute the Indian captain wasted easiest of the opportunity when he shot wide a Allwyn Gorge pass as Yusuf Batt was at his mercy. So, it can be said that if the Indian goalkeeper was the savior in the 1st half then in the 2nd half it was Yusuf Batt.

With this win India earned three points, but it is Nepal who are leading the Group A league table as they had scored twice against the Bangladesh in the opening encounter.
