Both Juventus and Real Madrid advanced to the semi-final stage by winning their respective quarter-finals against AS Monaco and Atletico Madrid by 1-0 over two legs. The Spanish outfit have faced the Italian giants six times in the champions league with the old lady progressing the previous time they met in the semi-final stage back in 2003. UCL 2002/03 Semifinal : 14.05.2003 : Juventus -- 3-1 -- Real Madrid UCL 2002/03 Semifinal : 06.05.2003 : Real Madrid -- 2-1 -- Juventus In European competitions, both have met 16 times with the Blancos lead the head-to-head record by eight wins to seven with a solitary draw. Their last meeting in the champions league was a 2-2 draw in Turin in November 2013. Juventus won 45 games in their 55 competitive matches at home, with nine draws and 1 loss. So, the Old Lady have made it a fortress, one thing the defending champions should be wary of, but that's not all. Real Madrid have been eliminated in their last three European semi-finals against Italian sides (Juventus 2003, Torino 1992, and AC Milan 1989). Team wise speaking, Juventus is not sure about French international and one of world's best young prospect, Paul Pogba, whether he'll be fit in time for the match. Paul Pogba is currently out of action since mid-march nursing a torn thigh. Pogba is one of the key men for Massimiliano Allegri, accompanying midfield general Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal. Experience campaigner Claudio Marchisio is there to take his place. Record (Juventus): 2nd in Group A, beat Borussia Dortmund in Round of 16, and AS Monaco in Quarterfinals Goals For: 13 Goals Allowed: 5 Leading Goal Scorer: Carlos Tevez - goals 6 Record (Real Madrid): 1st in Group B, beat FC Schalke in Round of 16, and Atletico Madrid in Quaterfinals Goals For: 22 Goals Allowed: 6 Leading Goal Scorer: Cristiano Ronaldo - goals 8 As far as Real Madrid is concerned, Luka Modric will be out of action and forward duo Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are expected to start who are both recovering from injuries. It will be interesting to see what team Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti field for the crucial tie. Due to the Croatian's absence, Ancelotti fielded centre back Pepe in midfield along with Toni Kroos giving Raphael Varane a shot at the centre-half position. Both sides have a deadly strike force in their artillery. Juve's Carlos Tevez has scored a total of 28 goals in all competitions, 6 coming in the champions league and his partner, Alvaro Morata former Real player has 9 goals so far in his credit. The youngster has wowed everyone in Italy after his summer move to the Turin based side. Tevez's former Manchester United team mate Cristiano Ronaldo has so far scored 53 goals this season, 8 in the champions league one behind top scored Luiz Adriano of Shakhtar Donektsk. Apart from Ronaldo there is James Rodriguez who has been in excellent form for the past few games scoring some spectacular goals. Ancelotti might opt for United loanee Javier Hernandez. Hernandez scored the winning goal against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the quarter-final stage. Throughout the season he was nowhere to be seen but he has turned around well for the past few games. Both the teams will be heading into the match with their respective league wins with Juve rounding off the Seria A title to their name. Real Madrid have the edge and look a better side on paper, but the game is not won on paper. Real would like to sneak in a few away goals, while Juventus won’t mind a goalless draw but it would be an advantage for them going into second leg if they could get the better of the defending champions. |
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - 2014-15 PREVIEW : (SF - FINAL)PREVIEW : 1st Leg Semi2 : Bayern Munich (GERMANY) VS Barcelona (SPAIN)Bayern up for an encore, Barca looking to avenge 2013 trauma. 05.05.2015 : DEBAYAN BHATTACHARYYA : Barcelona face off Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions league semi-final match on Wednesday with the Catalan giants playing the first leg at home. Barcelona and Bayern Munich advanced to the semi-final stage by winning their respective quarter-finals 5-1 and 7-4 over two legs. After a poor first leg against Porto, the Bavarians came back in style and trounced Porto 6-1 at the Allianz Arena, making sure everyone that they are pretty much the same Bayern side as they were before. Past echoes comes back to haunt Barcelona as they look to get the better of the German outfit. The last time they met at the semi-final stage two years back Barcelona slumped to a 7-0 aggregate loss, the biggest aggregate loss in the history of Champions league. They lost 4-0 away to Bayern in the first leg and 3-0 in the following leg at the Camp Nou. Bayern then went onto to clinch the title at Wembly. Head to HEAD Champions League 2012/2013 Semi-finals FC Barcelona 0-3 Bayern München 2012/2013 Semi-finals Bayern München 4-0 FC Barcelona 2008/2009 Quarter-finals Bayern München 1-1 FC Barcelona 2008/2009 Quarter-finals FC Barcelona 4-0 Bayern München 1998/1999 Group D FC Barcelona 1-2 Bayern München 1998/1999 Group D Bayern München 1-0 FC Barcelona Europa League 1995/1996 Semi-finals FC Barcelona 1-2 Bayern München 1995/1996 Semi-finals Bayern München 2-2 FC Barcelona This will be the third time they are facing each other in an European competition semi-final, with Bayern winning the the other two meetings. In the last 8 Champions league matches Barca managed to win only once with Bayern winning 5 times with 2 draws. The Germans have a pretty good record at Camp Nou as well winning 3 out of 4 matches statistically, the Catalans do not hold a good record against them, a point which the Germans have proved. This time around it could be a different ball game after all. Barcelona’s star studded attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez are in excellent form and have scored a staggering total of 108 goals in all competitions with Lionel Messi himself scoring 51 goals in 50 games. He is also the top scorer for Barcelona this season in the Champions League with 8 goals one behind top scorer Luiz Adriano of Shakhtar Donetsk. The trio kicked off a slow start but then they began to get use to their stride and then went on to eclipse everyone. The trio is in some form and it won't take much time for them to split the defence line apart. Jerome Boateng and co. needs to keep this thing in mind. As far as the overall team is concerned, Barcelona has no injury worries and will have a fully fit squad for the tie. While Bayern Munich have a number of key players out injured. The Bavarian's league top scorer Arjen Robben and full-back, David Alaba will miss the remainder of the season. Robben will be heavily missed in attack and Alaba in defence. Another star player Robert Lewandowski, suffered a concussion as well as breaking his jaw and his nose in Bayern Munich's penalty shoot-out loss to Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Pokal semi-final, last week. Bayern's sporting director Matthias Sammer have no intention to risk Lewandowski for the semi-final tie even if the doctors give the green signal. Still he has returned to training wearing a mask covering his face, but whether he'll get a start is not sure. Franck Ribery remains a doubtful starter who has been out injured since mid-march. It will be a homecoming for Bayern’s boss Pep Guardiola who spent 4 successful seasons with the Catalans, leading them to as many as 14 trophies. Guardiola knows the club more than anyone else and it would be interesting to see what tactics he has up in his sleeves for the likes of Messi, Iniesta, Mascherano, Pique and Xavi, the successful men during his reign. Guardiola's counterpart will be his former Barcelona team-mate, during his playing days, Luis Enrique. So we can say an all 'Barcelona Re-union' is on the cards. Pep Guardiola will be without his key players and he needs to field the best possible line-up against an in-form Barca side. Barcelona won 7 times this season against big teams only losing two times to Real Madrid and Paris Saint German. Barcelona's weakness has been defending for the past few seasons and again Bayern will look to exploit that particular area. It lingered on this season as well but since winning the second reverse fixture against arch-rivals Real Madrid, the defenders have been in good shape. Barcelona will be heading into the semi-final full of confidence after getting the better of Cordoba, a convincing 8-0 victory in La Liga. On the other hand, the Germans have already won the Bundesliga title, but lost their last league game away to Bayer Leverkusen by 2-0. Morale could end up being a factor for Bayern with their key players out injured and Barcelona in terrific form. But what the Germans did against Porto in the second leg, no way the Catalans are taking them lightly. This time around both teams are evenly poised. It's not going to be one of those one-sided matches like their last meeting. The first leg will speak a lot about the second. Pretty much it will go down the wire. ----------- |

RECORD : Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez now have an astounding 111 goals between them this season. RECORD : Messi's career total of Champions League goals to 77, beating the last record of 76 of Cristiano Ronaldo set only the night before against Juventus. Barcelona have almost put this semi-final to bed leaving Bayern hoping for a rare miracle. Throughout the match Barca had the better chances, one of the best chances falling to Luis Suarez when he was through on goal, one-on-one with Neuer, but the world cup winner did really well to stick out his leg at the right time. Bayern, surprisingly failed to have a single shot on target, but had a glorious chance to score when Thomas Muller played a low ball into the box from the right flank, falling to Lewandowski who slides it wide off target with no Barca defender present to stop him. First half score was goalless. Second half saw Bayern defenders tighten things up at the back, but their defence was finally exposed as Messi collected a lay-off from Alves and unleashed a low left-footed drive that flew into the bottom-right corner. That was not all, Messi was far from finished. After collecting the ball from Ivan Rakitic, Messi teased Jerome Boateng before expertly flicking the ball with his right boot and lofting a magnificent chipped finish over Neuer and into the bottom-left corner. Neymar killed the tie in style beating Neuer one-on-one in time added on. Juventus deservedly took the lead dominating play for the most part of the first half, Stephen Lichsteiner sent Tevez through on goal and his shot was just pushed away by Casillas before Alvaro Morata, former Real man scored from close range. Real made it all square in the 27th minute when James Rodriguez's looping cross from the right of the penalty box 'found ronaldo's head, being unmarked. After getting the equalizer Real were the better side with their continuous attack. They could have easily made it 2-1 when James Rodriguez’s header came off the woodwork. After a cautious opening to the second half, the tie took a twist in the 57th minute. Tevez led a lightning Juve counter-attack from his own half and Carjaval sent the former Manchester City man tumbling when he tried to nick the ball, leaving referee Martin Atkinson with no choice but to award a penalty. And there was no mistake from Tevez, who drilled his shot straight down the middle to register his 29th goal of another prolific season. Juve then turn defensive for the remainder of the half bringing on Andrea Barzagli as the fifth defender. Real threw numbers forward in an attempt to find the leveller, and Ronaldo let Juve off the hook when he failed to guide Rodriguez's left-wing cross on target. Juve could have had a third in injury time when substitute Fernando Llorente headed Andrea Pirlo's teasing free-kick straight at Casillas, but Juve Boss Massimiliano Allegri is sure to be satisfied with a one-goal lead. ----------- |
