Mohammedan Sporting ended up on the losing side of an exciting Hero I-League match here at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday as Churchill Brothers picked up their third away victory of the season. Finishing prowess made the difference as the Goan team won 2-1.

cHURCHILL BROTHERS took the lead in style in the 42nd minute when Chaves passed to Sharif Mukhammad just outside Mohammedan box, and the Afghan midfielder coolly curled it over Zothanmawia, who was caught in no man’s land. Cisse, who had an otherwise perfect match, had to pull down goal-bound Faslu with his hands. Referee Jehrul Islam correctly gave him marching orders.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

But Mohammedan’s one-man advantage did not last long. Ruatkima brought down a rampaging Chaves to receive his second yellow card and was sent off in the 73rd minute. However, Vicuna’s men kept attacking and Joseph did put the ball into the net six minutes later, only to be ruled offside.

Then Churchill assistant coach Mateus Costa made the change that eventually settled the issue. He replaced Emmanuel Yaghr with Hero of the Match Abdoulaye Sane. His presence was not felt immediately. On the contrary, when Albino spilled a powerful shot by Sandip Mandi for Abiola Dauda to pounce on it and equalise in the 90th minute, it seemed Mohammedan will get away with a point.

But Sane spoilt their day with a terrific goal. He came in from the right and went for the goal with his left foot, through the far post. The Mohammedan Sporting defence could not have done much about it. With this win, the Red Machines are now in fourth position on the table with 23 points, while the Black and White Brigade stay ninth with 17 points.

Mohammedan Sporting’s terrible away record remained intact but Tiddim Road Athletic Union’s perfect record at the Khuman Lampak Stadium was broken on Friday, February 3. After witnessing 11 goals in the last two matches in the Hero I-League matches, perhaps it was time for a dull goalless stalemate.

The defensive solidity and clean sheet will probably thrill Mohammedan coach Kibu Vicuna, but that alone will not help a team languishing at the ninth spot on the table. If Vicuna’s boys keep wasting chances like they did here, it may become difficult to avoid relegation, which is the coach’s primary objective.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

TRAU, who are at the opposite end of the table, found the Kolkata team a harder nut to crack than they would’ve thought. Leimapokpam Nandakumar Singh’s wards had a mere one attempt on target in the game. That, too, came in the second half when Komron Tursunov’s corner from the left was headed by the Brazilian Gerson Vieira at the far post. Mohammedan Sporting custodian Zothanmawia palmed it out with impeccable anticipation.

Henry Kisekka scored his sixth goal of the 2022-23 Hero I-League season as Aizawl FC rode their luck to beat Mohammedan Sporting here at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here on Thursday, January 26, 2023.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

After an indifferent first half between two teams that played a thriller in the first leg, the match gained momentum after the breather. The visitors, who had avoided defeat in Kolkata in the last minute, were unlucky not to go 1-0 up in the 56th minute. Midfielder Kean Lewis had a brilliant match, but on that occasion his powerful right-footer hit the post. Lady luck was clearly not on Mohammedan Sporting’s side today. The same misfortune befell Mohammedan Sporting’s Serbian midfielder Nikola Stojanovic in the 90th minute, when his scorching left-footer hit the crossbar and went out, denying Kibu Vicuna’s team the equaliser.

Kisekka scored the all-important goal long before that, capitalising on a rare mistake by an otherwise solid Mohammedan Sporting defence. Their leader Ousmane Ndiaye had the measure of Kisekka for most of the match but in the 66th minute, his tackle inside the box was deemed illegal by referee Joyshing Monsang Thumli. Kisekka scored the penalty with clinical precision.

Led by a brilliant Luka Majcen, RoundGlass Punjab FC banished the memories of their previous game to emphatically beat Mohammedan Sporting Club 4-0 at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, January 22. In the process they also became the first side to win a game in Kolkata against the hosts.

The first came off an innocuous looking attack, Chencho Gyeltshen playing Brandon Vanlalremdika on the left wing into space. Brandon cut back and lifted a hopeful cross into the box towards the far post, with Majcen waiting. Rather than taking a header on goal, Majcen cushioned it back, into the path of an onrushing Juan Mera, who swept in a first time volley to spark the celebrations.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

Mohammedan had a chance of their own soon after, and it took some Kiran Limbu acrobatics to ensure Punjab held the lead. The Nepalese goalkeeper pulled off one of the saves of the season, to his right to palm Faiaz’s shot from six yards, away.

If the first of Punjab’s goals was a team effort, the second was pure individual genius, Majcen picking up the ball on the left of the box, cutting it to his right foot before curling it into the far corner and over Sankar Roy’s diving palms. Punjab went into the break leading by two.

Kibu Vicuna’s half time changes ushered in some urgency in the home side’s play but Punjab were ruthless and clinical, punishing them for every misstep, and with ease. The third came after some pinball in the six-yard box from a Punjab free kick. The loose ball fell to Majcen two yards from goal. He graciously accepted the gift.

With 15 minutes to go and Mohammedan looking lost, Punjab scored a fourth to add the gloss to a brilliant performance. Mera doubled up on his own tally for the game, running through a porous Mohammedan defence before letting fly from 20 yards. His teammates fell upon him in glee as it hit the net.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

Soon after though the game settled into a pattern, Mohammedan controlling the midfield and patiently building play with the home side quick to turn the ball over and counter. In the 10th minute Joseph drew the first of many saves from Padam Chettri in Kenkre’s goal, his effort from the top of the box tipped on to the post by the keeper.

In the 34th minute, finally, the tide turned for Mohammedan. Lots of patient build up, ended with a cross into the box, and a weak clearance put the ball at Mirlan Murzaev’s feet at the edge of the area. The Kyrgyz midfielder made no mistake, lashing a first-time shot into the top left corner. Mohammedan had their lead.

Vicuna’s men took a stranglehold on the game within five minutes of the second half, Christy Davis’s brilliant long range effort, putting them two up. Marcus Joseph ticked off his goal for the game at the hour mark, and at that stage it looked like Kenkre were in for a rough evening out. The Trinidadian latched on first time to Abhishek Ambekar’s low cross to bulge the bottom corner of the net.

Joseph had the chance to double his tally in the 73rd, after Mohammedan had won a penalty. His effort was saved by the Kenkre goalkeeper Padam Chettri — who was the bright light in an otherwise dull day for the home side. Chettri’s save fell kindly to Joseph, but the Trinidadian could only head it wide.

Kenkre created some openings in the final quarter of an hour, but Mohammedan did just enough to keep them at bay. Yash Mhatre, Ranjeet Pandre and Ben Ouattara forced some smart saves from Sankar Roy, ensuring the keeper had to earn his clean sheet. With the win, Mohammedan finally had their first away win of the season, and Vicuna his first victory since marking his return to the Hero I-League.

On an evening where the game started in a rusty manner, it was Aizawl who came to life at the half-hour mark, taking the lead through a towering header from Henry Kisekka, which was later matched by a scintillating left-footed strike from the home captain Marcus Joseph just seconds from half-time. The two strikers added a goal each from set-pieces in the second half, with Joseph’s equaliser coming from the last kick of the match to salvage Mohammedan’s unbeaten home record.

A match that remained as cold as the chilly evening here at Ambedkar Stadium for 80 minutes, sprang to life in the last ten to end in a tense 1-1 draw. Mohammedan Sporting’s workhorse captain Marcus Joseph gave his side the lead in the 81st minute with a brilliant left-footer. But his Rajasthan United counterpart Joseba Beitia scored from the spot seven minutes later to equalise.

For the fourth match this season, the Kolkata side failed to hold on to their lead, adding just one point to their kitty. Joseph, however, moved up to joint-third in the list of top-scorers with his fourth goal.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

As soon as the second half got underway, Lewis found a lot of space in front of him and looked set to score as no Rajasthan United defender was around to stop him. But Rafique came a long way out to grab the ball before Lewis could even touch it. Mohammedan Sporting exerted more and more pressure on the hosts’ defence as the match wore on, and Rafique seemed to grow in stature, keeping out Abiola’s volley in the 73rd minute.

Rafique could not have stopped Marcus in the 81st minute. He capped a superb solo run from the left wing, got into the box, wrong-footed midfielder Bektur Amangeldiev and unleashed a left-footer that crashed into the net.

Having scored so late into the match, he could have justifiably hoped to have settled the issue but Mohammedan Sporting defender Ousmane could not take the pressure in the dying minutes, and handled the ball inside the box. Custodian Sankar Roy could not get anywhere near Beitia’s penalty kick this time.

Marcus did find Faslu Rahman in a scoring position inside the Rajasthan United box in the 90th minute but Faslu only managed to hit the side net.

A change of coach meant a change in fortunes for Sudeva Delhi FC at the Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday, December 22, 2022, as Sankarlal Chakraborty took charge at the Delhi club to guide them to their first point of the season against a 10-man Mohammedan Sporting.

In a game where everything unfolded in the final minutes, Sudeva Delhi took the lead in the 86th minute through Theko Hriivei Carlos Pao, which was later cancelled out in injury time by a thumping volley from Abiola Dauda.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

At the brink of half-time, Mohammedan lost the ball in their own half to Lawmnasangzuala, who fed the ball to Carlos Pao as the midfielder went on to roll the ball into the back of the net, but was caught offside. Sudeva Delhi, who were not able to create many chances themselves, defended resiliently against the wave of Mohammedan attacks as the score remained goalless at halftime.

Captain Marcus Joseph sent a free-kick towards Sudeva’s bottom corner, but Jha stretched to tip it on to the upright, before it went out of play. Six minutes later, at the other end, substitute Francis Nwankwo sent a header just over the cross-bar from a corner by Lotjem.

Pao was through on goal, before being tripped just outside the Sudeva area by Abhishek Halder, who was immediately given his marching orders by referee K Ramdasan.

It was Pao who ultimately gave Sudeva the lead with just four minutes of regulation time left. Francis Nwankwo went past his marker, entered the box and sent a grounded cross to Pao at the far post, who scored with a clean strike.

After scoring, Sudeva Delhi looked to run down the clock but were stunned by an equaliser in injury time. Faslurahaman sent a cross into the box, which was beautifully collected by Abiola Dauda, who went on to send an acrobatic volley into the back of the net from close range.

A powerful volley from captain Marcus Joseph in the 57th minute proved enough for the hosts in the match where Mohammedan’s Safiul Rahaman and Real Kashmir’s Yakubu Wadudu were shown the red card late in the second half. This was Mohammedan’s third win of the season.

A minute before the half time, Mohammedan had a good opportunity. Faslu Rahaman made a run through the visitors’ defence after receiving the ball from Abiola Dauda. The midfielder ran into the penalty area but his shot could not find the target.

The second period began with both teams dishing out a better display. The home team had an edge over the opponents as Halder won a free-kick in the 55th minute. Captain Marcus Joseph sent a curler from the free-kick, but custodian Roy Chowdhury had his goal covered as he saw the ball go just wide.

Two minutes later, Joseph shot Mohammedan into the lead after playing wall passes with Abiola Dauda, who flicked it back for his skipper to find the back of the net with a thumping volley.

Ten minutes from the full-time whistle, a physical battle broke down between Joseph and Yakubu Wadudu. As some players from both the teams got involved in a scuffle, the referee, after peace was restored, gave the marching orders to Safiul Rahaman and Wadudu.

Mohammedan Sporting dropped points at home for the first time this season when they were held 2-2 by a spirited Mumbai Kenkre FC side in the 2022-23 Hero I-League at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Tuesday (December 13, 2022).

Mohammedan Sporting took the early lead thanks to captain Marcus Joseph’s great long-range strike before Azfar Noorani equalised for Mumbai Kenkre at the stroke of half-time. Abiola Dauda’s header put the Black and White Brigade ahead again at the hour mark but the Mumbaikars responded yet again with skipper Kiran Pandhare’s goal 15 minutes from time.

Mohammedan Sporting dominated the ball straight from kick-off, building from the back and using the wings to penetrate the opponent’s box. The constant pressure in the early minutes benefited the home side as they gained the lead of the match in the 10th minute. Skipper Marcus Joseph, set up by Abiola Dauda on top of the penalty area, fired a half-volley into the bottom right corner of the goal, giving no chance to Kenkre’s custodian Tenzin Samdup. Mohammedan didn’t take their foot off the gas after the early lead and defender Abhash Thapa hit the post in the 19th minute with his attempt from distance.

aiff hero i-leaguE 2022-23 LIVE SCORE

Midway through the half, Mohammedan gave away a few unnecessary free kicks close to their penalty area, however, the visitors couldn’t capitalise due to their rather poor quality of deliveries from set pieces.

In the final 10 minutes of the half, Mohammedan created multiple chances in their hunt for a second goal but to the home team’s misery, Kenkre scored the equaliser against the run of play in the add-on time. Aman Gaikwad took advantage of a slip from Abhash Thapa before feeding the ball into Azfar Noorani’s path. Noorani continued the run on the left before beating the Mohammedan goalkeeper Zothanmawia with his convincing left-footed strike into the roof of the net.

Mohammedan continued to attack the Kenkre half in the second half and almost found the back of the net in the 50th minute. A shot from Faiaz inside the penalty area was saved by the right boot of goalkeeper Samdup.

The Black and White Brigade regained the lead of the game at the hour mark. A teasing delivery into the box from Joseph found Dauda near the six-yard box. The Kenkre defence failed to clear their lines as the Nigerian striker made no mistake, diving low to head the ball into the back of the net.

The Mohammedan lead lasted only 15 minutes as the Kenkre captain Kiran Pandhare got the visitors back into the game. Noorani took a corner kick and after a series of missed clearances and failed shots, the ball ricocheted and found its way to Pandhare at the far post and the midfielder slotted in the equaliser.

The final quarter of the game saw a level of urgency displayed by the home team, while the visitors looked content to play for a point. Mohammedan created a late surge to find the winner, however, the hosts didn’t have enough left in the tank to take the lead for the third time.

Mohammedan Sporting edged out TRAU FC 1-0 at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Sunday, November 27 to pick up their second consecutive win.

Midfielder Faslu Rahman’s first-half strike made all the difference for the Black and White Brigade, who are now starting to find their feet after losing their opening two matches of the season. The fixture marked the much-awaited first appearance of the season for Mohammedan’s midfield maestro Nikola Stojanović. The Serbian played a key part in the Black and White Brigade’s second-place finish last season.

The breakthrough for Mohammedan came in the 40th minute with their first shot on target. Abhishek Ambekar’s looping cross invited TRAU custodian Loitongbam Bishorjit Singh out of his goal but he failed to make the collection. The ball then fell right in the path of Faslu Rahman outside the box, who struck it first time to bag his second goal in as many games.

TRAU had a great chance to equalise at the stroke of half-time as Tursunov launched a powerful low strike with his right foot, which was caught by Sankar Roy’s firm hands between the sticks.

The experienced Mohammedan backline managed things well in the closing stages of the contest and saw off any potential TRAU attacks for a hard fought 1-0 victory. Mohammedan right-back Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak was named Hero of the Match for his solid defensive display against the likes of Bikash and Poku.

The result saw Andrey Chernyshov’s Mohammedan Sporting rise to sixth place in the standings with six points. TRAU, on the other hand, have slipped to seventh position with four points.

Mohammedan Sporting Club left it late, but ultimately secured a 3-1 victory over NEROCA FC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

An own goal by NEROCA captain David Simbo handed Mohammedan Sporting a first half lead, which was cancelled out on the other side of the break by Mirjalol Kasimov. The home side, however, struck twice in the last 10 minutes through a Marcus Joseph penalty and some individual brilliance by Faslurahman Methukayil to seal the three points.

It was Lewis again, who created the opportunity that finally led to Mohammedan taking the lead, as his cross from the right was inadvertently headed into the goal by NEROCA defender David Simbo, with five minutes of regulation time left on the clock in the first half.

The side from Imphal finally found the equaliser that they were looking for a little over 10 minutes after the restart through their other Uzbek midfielder Mirjalol Kasimov. The 27-year-old was fed a square pass by Jordan Fletcher at the edge of the Mohammedan area, as he controlled the ball and side-footed it on the half-volley to curl it into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Sankar Roy with no chance.

With exactly 10 minutes of regulation time left on the clock, Mohammedan striker swivelled inside the box, looking for some space, but was brought down by James Singh. Referee Jehrul Islam did not hesitate to point to the spot, as Joseph stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way.

Faslurahman Methukayil calmed the nerves of the Mohammedan Sporting supporters just three minutes later with an absolute peach of a goal. Cutting in from the left flank, Faslu showed some quick feet to dribble past two defenders, before curling it in from a tight angle.

While the atmosphere just a few minutes earlier was a tense one at the Kishore Bharanti Krirangan, Faslu’s goal meant that the drums began to sound in full flow from the galleries, as the referee soon brought the match to an end.

RoundGlass Punjab FC registered a 1-0 win in their second Hero I-League 2022-23 match, defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club today (November 20, 2022) at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana.

Luka Majcen scored the lone goal of the match early in the first half, which proved to be enough for the hosts to notch up their second win in a row. On the other hand, the result means it is two straight losses for the Black and White Brigade, both of them coming on the road.

The first half began in explosive fashion as Majcen found the net for RoundGlass Punjab FC in the third minute itself, calmly slotting home a defence-splitting through pass by Samuel Lamuanpuia. In the next minute, Mohammedan had a glorious chance as Kean Lewis’ clipped pass found Marcus Joseph in a 1-v-1 situation against the keeper. However, he fumbled his attempt and Kiran Limbu came out on top with a double-save.

The second half kicked off with Majcen making a darting run into the penalty area, but Safiul Rahaman did well to avert him. In the 49th minute, Ousmane Ndiaye had a free header from a corner kick opportunity but blazed his effort over the bar. Joseph began to drop deep for Mohammedan in a playmaking role as the game approached the hour mark, with RoundGlass Punjab FC remaining solid in protecting their lead and looking to create openings on the break.

One such counter attack in the 65th minute resulted in substitute Pranjal Bhumij being brought down at the edge of the box by Wayne Vaz. From the resulting free-kick, Adnan Secerovic went for goal and flashed it just wide of the target.

The visitors pressed for the leveller but could not create any major chances in front of goal, as the home team held firm and maintained their clean sheet till the final whistle. Thus, RoundGlass Punjab FC ensured the win and made it six points out of a possible six in the league so far.

Defending champions Gokulam Kerala FC started the new season from where they left off last time. In the Hero I-League opener at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri, the home side made the perfect start, beating Mohammedan SC by a solitary goal to pick up all three points. Last season, Gokulam defeated Mohammedan in the concluding and deciding encounter to bag their second straight title.

Mohammedan started the game on a high tempo, with several new signings like Nuriddin Davronov, Abhishek Ambekar and Abiola Dauda in their starting XI. Soon, Gokulam Kerala also grew into the game and it became an end-to-end affair. In the 11th minute, Gokulam’s Farshad Noor and Nuriddin Davronov of Mohammedan were booked by the referee after an argument.

The first half did not see many clear opportunities for either side. Aminou Bouba went close for Gokulam in the 35th minute but his free-kick went just over the bar. Gokulam Kerala stepped up their game and began the second half with more urgency. Rahul Raju and Christy Davis of the home and away teams, respectively, received yellow cards at the start of the second half.

The Malabarians then broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. New forward signing Auguste Somlaga played a quick give-and-go with midfielder Farshad Noor before driving a low shot from outside the box. His effort slipped through the hands of Mohammedan keeper Zothanmawia and the ball crossed the goal-line.

After going into arrears, Mohammedan Coach Andrey Chernyshov made a tactical change as he brought on the midfielder Faslu Rahman for striker Dauda in the 62nd minute. The Black and White Brigade had a decent chance to equalize in the 64th minute as Vanlalzuidika raided the Gokulam penalty area but the attack didn’t amount to anything. On the other side, Farshad Noor entered the Mohammedan box after some great dribbling but his effort narrowly missed the target.

Midway through the second half, the game turned into a midfield tussle. Mohammedan seemed like running out of ideas and failed to pose any real threat to the Gokulam defence. In the 83rd minute, their skipper SK Faiaz received a good chance in the Gokulam box but his shot went straight to the Gokulam goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil, who dealt with it easily.

The fans attended the first I-League match in over two years and it was great to see them back in the stands. The Malabarians clearly had an edge in the game and received the backing of the vociferous crowd throughout the match.
