26.2.21: ATK Mohun Bagan are already qualified for the playoff stages in the seventh edition of Indian Super League. The Mariners are at the pole of the League table with 40 points at the end of the 19 round of the competition.

The prime task of ATK Mohun Bagan is to earn a point against Mumbai City FC in order to qualify for the AFC Champions League. The Mariners are preparing under Antonio Habas since Tuesday. The important footballers of the squad David Willams and Pritam Kotal spoke regarding the preparation before the important match.

While interacting with the club media DAVID WILLAMS said,"Is is a very important and a big match not only for our club, but for all the players. Like the last six matches, we have to get a positive result in the Mumbai match as well. Only then the dream will come true. We will not play for a draw. We will play on Sunday to win. That is how we are preparing.”match.

He said,"I don't want to worry about whom Mumbai scored six goals against David Willams is not concerned about Mumbai City FC's performance in the previous. I am not giving importance to that. We will beat Mumbai and that is the challenge. If we being at the top of the league table or that the goal can be achieved with a draw, anyone thinks that we are in an advantageous position, is wrong.

To play keeping that in mind means to get defeated. What we're doing on the field on Sunday will be the factor. We have to stick to the strategy of scoring goals by keeping our target intact. It is proved that our team has the mentality to fight till the last minute and bring out the best in the match.”

PRITAM KOTAL feels that we should utilise the golden opportunity to play in AFC Champions League. While inteacting Pritam said, "Before the start of ISL, we had two aims, first, to be the champion and second, to get the passport to play in the AFC Champions League. We have created a golden opportunity to play in the Champions League and only one point is needed. But in the Mumbai match we will not play for one point. We will go to the field thinking of winning. We are confident of winning this match."

The match will be played at GMC stadium, Bambolim.

JFC seemed to have done their homework right, as the Islanders found it difficult to play from the back as they usually do. They had just one shot in the first session, that too off target.

Though both sides didn’t have clear-cut chances, Mumbai’s Amrinder Singh was comparatively busier than JFC’s TP Rehenesh. Amrinder was called into action as early as the 5th minute when Isaac Vanmalsawma lashed in a cross from the left flank into the box for Nerijus Valskis. But his header was met by Amrinder’s palm. JFC kept knocking at the Mumbai goal throughout but weren’t getting the final touch. Seiminlen Doungel and Farukh Choudhary had their moments but again they couldn’t keep their attempt on target.

Valskis missed a chance to put his side ahead when he was played in by Isaac. However, the Lithuanian headed way over. Nothing changed in the second session as JFC continued their attack on the Mumbai goal. Isaac sent a cross to Choudhary, who showed great technique in controlling the ball before getting past his marker, only to see his attempt saved by Amrinder.

It was no surprise when JFC got the ball in the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Aitor Monroy hit a low delivery at the near post and Choudhary got ahead of Ahmed Jahouh and flicked it to the middle. Boris was there at the right place at the right time to slam the ball into the back of the net.

Mumbai had a chance to restore parity from a corner. Cy Goddard was able to find Mourtada Fall with his delivery by the last-named but fired his header wide. Grande ensured full points for JFC with a fine finish. Isaac and Monroy combined in the middle of the park with little pressure before the Spaniard slipped the ball into the path of Grande, who stabbed it past Amrinder.

MATCH DETAILS - ISL: Mumbai City FC had 23 shots, the most they have had in the entire season but they just couldn’t get the result they were looking for. Instead, it was a rejuvenated Bengaluru FC side that walked away with three points after an impressive 4-2 win in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim, on Monday.

The night saw the best of BFC skipper Sunil Chhetri, who scored a brace (57’, 90’) in his 200th game for the club. Cleiton Silva also bagged his double (1’, 22’) while Adam Le Fondre (50', 72') scored for Mumbai.

15/02/2021 (ISL:MATCH-95) : MUMBAI CITY FC - 2-4 - BENGALURU FC

It took just 25 seconds for BFC to take the lead with Silva scoring the fastest goal of the season and second-fastest in the history of the league. After getting the ball in midfield, Chhetri released Udanta Singh on the wing. The winger sprinted down the flank and sprayed a pass across the face of the goal to Silva, who made no mistake.

Mumbai had better possession and more shots on target, but overall BFC were sharper in transition and terrific on the counter. As Mumbai looked to wrest control, the Blues were putting up one of their finest performances of the season and were rewarded with their second in the 22nd minute from a set-piece. Xisco Hernandez sent in a delightful ball at the far post and Silva timed his run to head it into the back of the net. Amrinder Singh, who moments earlier had denied Erik Paartalu with a fine save, couldn’t do much.

Lobera’s side had two good chances to get back into the game, one through Le Fondre and another through Raynier Fernandes but both were not converted. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu then made a big save to deny Mourtada Fall. The Islanders came back stronger in the second half and managed to reduce the deficit. Cy Goddard made a run on the right and threaded a well-time cross inside the box. Le Fondre got in front of Harmanjot Khabra and caressed the ball past Gurpreet.

But BFC restored their two-goal lead within seven minutes through Chhetri. Gurpreet’s goal kick found Chhetri upfront who had Hernan Santana on him. However, the latter took a tumble, setting Chhetri free with just Amrinder between him and the goal and the skipper made no mistake. But there was another twist as, with 20 minutes left, Le Fondre scored his second, guiding a Goddard freekick past Gurpreet.

Mumbai kept knocking in search of the equaliser and nearly scored through Le Fondre, but Gurpreet produced a fine save.At the other end, BFC scored their fourth to seal full points. Edmund Lalrindika set Chhetri through and he coolly scored past Amrinder for his second.

08/02/2021 (ISL : Match 87) : MUMBAI CITY FC - 3-3 - FC GOA

The Islanders took the lead through Hugo Boumous (20’) and Adam Le Fondre (26’) but goals from Glan Martins (45’) and Igor Angulo (51’) made it all square. But just when it looked like the match was heading for a draw, Rowllin Borges struck late (90') to put Mumbai ahead only to see his effort canceled out by Pandita in the final minutes of the game. Goa are now on a nine-game unbeaten run.

Goa dominated the match in terms of possession and passing but Mumbai's defense stood tall denying the Gaurs. Despite only completing half as many passes as their opponents, Mumbai still managed to walk into the breather with a one-goal cushion. Sergio Lobera’s team relied on counters and had more shots on target. They had four on target of which they converted two.

Boumous was full of life against his former team and fired an early warning when he raced past Adil Khan on the right, and attempted to cut the ball back. But Dheeraj Singh got a firm hand on the ball. But the Frenchman put his team ahead, scoring from a quick counter in the 20th minute. Goa were on the attack but Edu Bedia lost the ball to Raynier Fernandes. After the ball fell to Le Fondre, the Englishman released Boumous into acres of space. Boumous took the ball around Dheeraj to score into an empty net.

Le Fondre doubled Mumbai’s tally courtesy poor defending from Goa. Bipin Singh sent in a curling corner at the far post where Hernan Santana headed towards goal. But an alert Dheeraj managed to keep it out only to see the rebound headed into goal by Le Fondre for his ninth goal of the season.

Glan scored a stunner to reduce the deficit before the break. Jorge Ortiz played a pass to Glan at the halfway line and the new signing, who was making his first start for Goa, fired a thunderbolt which crashed into the Mumbai net. Goa came out stronger in the second session and restored parity soon. Alberto Noguera whipped in a cross from the left to find Angulo, who managed to time his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and score.

After missing a couple of sitters, Borges finally scored in the 90th minute when he guided in Ahmed Jahouh’s free-kick from the left. But there was still time left for another goal. Goa scored a stoppage-time leveler through Pandita who headed in Bedia’s cross.

MATCH DETAILS - ISL : Kerala Blasters squandered a lead once again as Mumbai City FC came from behind to win 2-1 in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim, on Wednesday. After missing many chances, Adam Le Fondre’s 67th-minute penalty proved decisive after Bipin Singh (46') had earlier canceled out Vicente Gomez first-half goal (27').

Kerala made three changes as Bakary Kone, Prasanth Karuthadathkuni and Yondrembem Denechendra found places in starting XI, while for Sergio Lobera’s Mumbai, Adam Le Fondre, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, and Cy Goddard were given a start. The half-time talk from Lobera seemed to have worked on his squad as the Islanders got back into the game soon after the restart.

Le Fondre set Goddard on the right as the latter evaded a tackle from opponents and attempted a shot. However, it took a deflection and went towards Bipin at the far post, who found the back of the net from a tight angle.Kerala kept pressing but Amrinder stood strong. The keeper continued to frustrate their opponents as he denied Murray and Rahul once again.

At the other end, Mumbai were awarded a penalty when Le Fondre was fouled in the box by Costa Nhamoinesu. This time, Le Fondre didn’t make a mistake as he smashed the ball past Albino. Mumbai managed to maintain their one-goal lead till the final whistle to extend their lead at the top.

MATCH DETAILS - ISL : NorthEast United got the better of Mumbai City yet again, doing a double over the Islanders with a 2-1 win in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim, on Saturday. The win also ended Mumbai's chances of creating history with a record 13th-straight unbeaten game. Interestingly, NorthEast is the only side who have managed to win against the might of the table-toppers. Interim coach Khalid Jamil also maintained his perfect run since taking charge of NorthEast and has now recorded his third straight win, taking his side back into the top four with 21 points.

30/01/2021 (MATCH 76: ISL) : MUMBAI CITY FC - 1-2 - NORTHEAST UNITED FC

Deshorn Brown’s first-half double was enough to see Mumbai off, despite Adam Le Fondre pulling back a late goal. Brown powered NorthEast ahead in the sixth minute. Luis Machado had a shot at goal which was parried by Amrinder Singh, but the danger wasn’t cleared as Nim Dorjee sent in a cross into the box. Brown, timed his run and smashed the ball, into the back of the net.

The Highlanders punished Mumbai for sloppy defending and scored their second within three minutes. Federico Gallego whipped in a corner in the box, which the Mumbai defense failed to clear as Hernan Santana’s weak header found Machado. The Portuguese forward pushed the ball to Brown and the Jamaican netted his second.

Second-half substitute Adam Le Fondre pulled a goal back for the Islanders in the 85th minute to restore some hope for Mumbai. Le Fondre and Boumous combined before the Frenchman found Ogbeche, who set free Le Fondre in the box. And the man who initiated the move fired the ball into the back of the net.

Mumbai nearly equalized in the stoppage time. Le Fondre’s attempted shot found Mehtab at the far post but his goal-bound header was pushed out for a corner by Subhasish Roy.

MATCH REPORT - ISL : A terrible late error in the box by Ahmed Jahouh rewarded Chennai’s perseverance and an improved second-half display as they held Mumbai City FC to a 1-1 draw in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim on Monday. However, the result meant the Islanders extended their unbeaten run to 12 games, matching FC Goa's record.

Mumbai grabbed the lead through Bartholomew Ogbeche (21') but his goal was canceled out by Esmael Goncalves (76') as Chennaiyin rallied to earn a hard-fought point.

25/01/21 (ISL: M-71) : CHENNAIYIN FC - 1-1 - MUMBAI CITY FC

The opening 45 minutes were nothing short of entertainment with both sides creating ample chances and testing each other. However, Mumbai proved more clinical than their opponents in the attacking third and deservedly led at the break.

Chennaiyin dominated the opening exchanges and created a chance as early as the second minute. Goncalves won the ball in midfield and played Thoi Singh on the right flank, whose cross was flicked by Mourtada Fall just outside the box. It fell towards Lallianzuala Chhangte who unleashed a shot on his weaker foot which was parried away by Amrinder Singh.

Another chance went begging for Chennaiyin, this time from a set-piece. Chhangte whipped a dangerous cross through a corner for Eli Sabia, who got a free header but saw his effort sail over the crossbar. Those missed opportunities would haunt Chennaiyin as Mumbai broke the deadlock. The Islanders have scored the most goals from set-pieces this season and opened the scoring in a similar fashion.

After Amey Ranawade's throw was cleared away poorly, Rowllin Borges found Bipin Singh on the left. The winger delivered a delicious cross at the far post for Ogbeche, who thumped a brilliant header to notch his fifth goal of the season. That was his 32nd Hero ISL goal as he overtook Marcelinho to climb to third on the all-time scoring charts.

Chennaiyin began the second half strongly in search of an equaliser but neither side was able to fashion clear-cut chances as the game progressed. However, they were fortunate to win a penalty after an error from Ahmed Jahouh. The midfielder was deemed to have tripped Jakub Sylvestr in the box. Goncalves stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent Amrinder the wrong way to draw Chennaiyin level.

Mumbai piled on the pressure in the last quarter of the game but Chennaiyin's defense stood tall to deny their opponents any chance of finding a winner.

MATCH REPORT-ISL : Mumbai City FC and Hyderabad FC played out an evenly fought goalless draw in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim, on Saturday. In a match where both teams failed to convert many chances, it was Hyderabad who turned up stronger on the day denying any goal to the relentless Mumbai attack.

16/01/21 (ISL : MATCH-60) : MUMBAI CITY FC -- 0-0 -- HYDERABAD FC

It was an end-to-end battle in the first half, as both the keepers were called into action. First, Laxmikant Kattimani produced a fine save to deny Adam le Fondre. Then, at the other end, Amrinder Singh kept his side alive in the game. Aridane Santana, Joel Chianese and Liston Colaco combined together to initiate the move before Colaco tried his luck from the byline, but his near post effort was well saved by Amrinder.

The Mumbai defense has been exceptional this season and Amrinder was at his best once again to deny Chianese. This was undeniably the best opportunity for Hyderabad to take the lead. Winning the ball in the midfield, Yasir delivered a lobbed through-ball for Chianese to send him one-on-one with the keeper. But the Australian’s shot was blocked by Amrinder.

It was more of a nervous start for Mumbai in the second half. They gave the ball away easily and nearly conceded a goal, when Amrinder, in a bid to clear a back pass, played it straight to Colaco. However, the Hyderabad striker shot wide.

Colaco continued to trouble Mumbai with his pace and shooting range, but it wasn’t enough to get the goal they were looking for. Meanwhile, for Mumbai, they were not at their best in the second session. Lobera’s men were sloppy going forward and wasted too many chances in the final third.

Mumbai had two late opportunities to get the winner. Ahmed Jahouh lobbed the ball in the box for Bartholomew Ogbeche, whose first-time shot landed on the roof. Later, the Moroccan’s stoppage-time free-kick couldn’t get the desired connection from his teammate, as it was easily collected by Kattimani.

MATCH REPORT-ISL : Mumbai City FC extended their unbeaten run in the Hero Indian Super League with a comfortable 3-1 win over Bengaluru FC at the Fatorda Stadium, on Tuesday.

Goals from Mourtada Fall (9'), Bipin Singh (15') and Bartholomew Ogbeche (84') helped the Islanders remain unbeaten in their last eight games and climb to the top of the Hero ISL table. Sunil Chhetri (79’) scored late but it wasn’t enough to rescue BFC, who have now suffered three straight league defeats for the first time ever.

05/01/2021 : (ISL : M-48) : BENGALURU FC -- 1-3 -- MUMBAI CITY FC

Unlike BFC, Mumbai didn’t miss their chance and took the lead in the ninth minute. Bipin's looped corner was headed across the goal by Hernan Santana. Fall leapt highest to nod the ball into the net. This was Fall's tenth goal in the league — all of them headed — and he is just one goal away from equalling Chhetri’s record of 11 headed goals.

Lobera’s men nearly doubled the tally soon. Ahmed Jahouh chipped in for Bipin on the right and the latter cut it back for Adam le Fondre in the box. The Englishman's shot though was deflected off target.

But it didn’t take long before the ball found the back of the net again. The second was a perfect team goal which saw Santana and Le Fondre combine to find Mandar Rao Dessai on the flank. The full-back whipped in a perfect cross for Bipin, who timed his run to get past his marker and score the team’s second goal.

Mumbai were brilliant in attack while their defence was good enough to keep BFC at bay. Keeper Amrinder Singh did well to keep Cleiton Silva’s free-kick out of goal with a diving save as Mumbai maintained their two-goal lead at the break.

Mumbai City were unlucky to concede a penalty in the 78th minute when Silva was challenged in the box by Fall. Though the Senegalese appeared to have won the ball, the referee pointed towards the spot. Chhetri kept his composure and scored.

MATCH DETAIL- ISL : Mumbai City FC reclaimed the top spot in the Hero Indian Super League following a 2-0 win over Kerala Blasters FC at the GMC Stadium, on Saturday. First-half goals from Adam Le Fondre (3’ P) and Hugo Boumous (11’) ensured full points for the Islanders who are now unbeaten in their last seven games.

02/01/2021 : (ISL : M-44) : MUMBAI CITY FC -- 2-0 -- KERALA BLASTERS

Both teams made a couple of changes to their line-ups, Boumous and Mandar Rao Dessai returned to Sergio Lobera’s starting XI while for Kerala, Costa Nhamoinesu and Lalthathanga Khawlhring were named ahead of Abdul Hakku and Rahul KP.

Mumbai punished Kerala for an early error which gifted them the first goal in the third minute. Boumous latched on to a Vicente Gomez back-pass and the Frenchman was brought down in the box by Nhamoinesu and won a penalty. Le Fondre netted his sixth goal of the campaign despite Albino Gomes getting a leg to the ball.

Mumbai doubled their lead in the 11th minute and this time, Boumous got his name on the scoresheet. Ahmed Jahouh sprayed a long ball from his own half towards Boumous from a free-kick, and the Frenchman made it look easy as he got past his marker and slotted past Albino.

Kerala took time to get into the game and had a couple of tries at the rival goal forcing Amrinder Singh into action. Amrinder first denied Gomez with a diving save and later stopped Sahal Abdul Samad’s effort. Sahal should have passed the ball to Facundo Pereyra, who was in a better position to score.

Kerala created chances and showed their desire to get back in the game but the Mumbai defenders were an equal match to their opponents. Mumbai were guilty of squandering yet another chance just before the break. Boumous cut the ball back to Le Fondre, but his chip sailed over the bar.

Kerala put up an improved performance in the second half. They created chances early and nearly pulled a goal back in the 55th minute but Jordan Murray's effort was ruled offside. With less than 20 minutes on the clock, Mumbai had the chance to further extend their lead when they were awarded yet another penalty after Boumous was fouled in the box. But this time, Albino read it right and his strong right arm denied Boumous.

At the other end, Amrinder came up with a brilliant save when he parried Gomez's long-range shot which brushed off the crossbar. The keeper did exceptionally well to help his side maintain their fifth clean sheet of the season.

REPORT - ISL : Table topper Mumbai City FC draw 1-1 against Jamshedpur FC in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, here on Monday. Owen Coyle's men took the lead through Nerijus Valskis (9') before Mumbai hit back through Bartholomew Ogbeche (15').

A red card for Aitor Monroy around the half-hour mark saw Jamshedpur reduced to ten-men but some dogged defending and a number of missed chances for Mumbai, saw the former get away with a draw.

14/12/2020 : (ISL: M-28) MUMBAI CITY FC 1-1 JAMSHEDPUR FC

Jamshedpur FC scored the first blood in Just nine minutes had passed when Jackichand Singh found Valskis in the penalty box. The Lithuanian's first-time sand sohot was unerring.

Mumbai found their equaliser in 15th minute. Adam Le Fondre made a run down the right before squaring the ball to Bipin Singh. The latter found Ogbeche and the Nigerian unleashed a powerful drive past Jamshedpur keeper TP Rehenesh. In 28th minute, the match turned firmly in Mumbai's favour. Monroy brought Ogbeche down right in front of the referee and got his second yellow.

The second half picked up where the first had left off with Sergio Lobera's men giving everything in their bid to find a winner. They missed a golden opportunity in the 61st minute when a blocked Ogbeche shot trickled down to Rowllin Borges. The midfielder had the goal gaping in front but somehow managed to hoof it over the bar.

Ogbeche then missed a clear-cut chance to put his team ahead in injury time, failing to divert a free header from close range into goal.

REPORT : Mumbai City FC came from behind to inflict a 2-1 defeat on Chennaiyin FC in the Hero Indian Super League at the GMC Stadium, Goa, on Wednesday to reach top of the table now with 12 points.

Adam Le Fondre smashed in a 75th-minute winner after Hernan Santana (45’) had canceled Jakub Sylvestr’s first goal. The result saw Sergio Lobera's team win their fourth game in a row and maintain their spot atop the Hero ISL table.

09/12/2020 : (ISL: M-22) MUMBAI CITY FC 2-1 CHENNAIYIN FC

Csaba Laszlo opted for a double change to the team that lost to Bengaluru FC. Fatkhullo Fatkhulloev and Germanpreet Singh started the game for Chennaiyin FC in place of Esmael Goncalves and Anirudh Thapa.

Just when it looked like Chennaiyin would walk into the breather with a goal advantage, Mumbai’s Santana had different plans. The Spaniard, who was unmarked at the far post, nodded in a Hugo Boumous’ corner to restore parity. The intensity dropped after the restart but Chennaiyin continued to test Mumbai’s defence. However, Mourtada Fall and keeper Amrinder Singh were at their best in the second half.

Mumbai doubled the lead in the 75th minute through another set-piece. Ahmed Jahouh’s long free-kick was flicked in by Rowllin Borges to Boumous. The Frenchman headed into the path of Le Fondre, who finished from close range. Chennaiyin nearly scored an equaliser in stoppage time, but Sylvestr’s header narrowly went wide.

MATCH DETAILS : Mumbai City FC continued their impressive start to the Hero Indian Super League Season 7 with a 2-0 victory over Odisha FC at the GMC Stadium, Bambolim here on Sunday.

A penalty from Batholomew Ogbeche (30') and a header from Rowllin Borges (45') gave Sergio Lobera's men their third win in four games and their first-win ever over Odisha in the league. The win sent them top of the table, level on points with ATK Mohun Bagan, albeit with a better goal difference. For their opponents, this was their third loss in four games and only point-less SC East Bengal lie below Stuart Baxter's side.

In 3oth minutes, Mumbai had their goal. Vignesh Dakshina Murthy's attempted cross from the edge of the box struck Shubham Sarangi's hand and the referee promptly pointed to the spot. Ogbeche stepped up and fired a low shot to the left, which a diving Kamaljit could not get his fingers to. It was the third penalty Odisha had conceded this season and the second mistake that Sarangi had committed, which had led to a goal.

Hugo Boumous missed a great chance to score in the 43rd minute, firing wide from Bipin Singh's pass. But Mumbai had their second a couple of minutes later. Bipin, again, fired in a great cross into the box which Borges headed past Kumar.

MATCH REPORT - ISL : For the longest time, it looked like Mumbai City were going to be frustrated by FC Goa in their Hero Indian Super League Season 7 encounter at the Fatorda Stadium on Wednesday. Sergio Lobera's men had played much of the match with a man-advantage after Redeem Tlang got a first-half red card. But dogged defending from Goa and Mumbai's own lack of fluency looked to be taking the match to a draw.

25.11.2020 :(ISL- M6) : FC GOA --- ( 0-1 ) --- MUMBAI CITY FC (FT)

Then, at the very death, Adam Le Fondre stepped up and fired in a penalty to ensure that Lobera got the better of his former team. Lobera made three changes to the side that lost to NorthEast United. Bartholomew Ogbeche and Mohamad Rakip dropped to the bench with Ahmed Jahouh suspended following his red card. Amey Ranawde, Cy Stephen Goddard and Mourtada Fall all came into the starting XI.

Goa coach Juan Ferrando named an attacking team. Left-back Saviour Gama was back in the side after a suspension while Tlang and Alberto Noguera were selected ahead of Princeton Rebello and Jorge Ortiz. The Gaurs had the first chance in the eighth minute when Noguera found Igor Angulo with a low cross, but the latter’s poor first touch let him down. Mumbai played with intent with Le Fondre constantly troubling Goa’s left flank. But they couldn’t convert their dominance into chances as they failed to record a single shot on goal in the first session.

The Gaurs then suffered a huge blow in the 40th minute when Tlang was shown red for his two-footed tackle on Hernan Santana. Surprisingly, it was Goa who started more aggressively in the second half. They nearly took the lead just after the restart when Angulo sprinted in the box, only to see his shot narrowly miss the post.

At the other end, Goa keeper Mohammed Nawaz almost gifted Mumbai a goal. His last-ditch clearance brushed the onrushing Le Fondre, but the touch wasn’t enough to send the ball to the back of the net. With less than a quarter to go, Mandar Rao Dessai squandered a great chance. Le Fondre's low shot was met by the left-back, but with just the keeper at his mercy, his touch proved too heavy, sending the ball over the post.

After constant knocking, Mumbai were finally awarded a penalty in the 5th minute of stoppage time after Lenny Rodrigues handled Bipin Singh’s header. Le Fondre's powerful drive gave Nawaz, who dived in the right direction, no chance.

MATCH REPORT DETAILS - ISL PRESS RELEASE : In football, individual moments often decide the larger story that plays out over 90 minutes. On Saturday, Mumbai City FC learnt this the hard way. A red card and a penalty turned a game, that they were otherwise dominating, on its head and handed NorthEast United FC a winning start to Hero Indian Super League Season 7, at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco.

21/11/20 - NORTH EAST UNITED - 1-0 - MUMBAI CITY FC (FT)

Kwesi Appiah (49’) scored the lone goal from a penalty after the Islanders were reduced to 10-men following Ahmed Jahouh’s red card just before the breather.

In the early stages, it looked like NorthEast were aiming for nothing more than a goalless draw, extreme caution visible in their game plan.

Predictably, it was Mumbai who dominated the first half. The Islanders were neat and proactive for long spells, though they were unable to find a cutting edge. Despite having players like Jahouh, Hugo Boumous, and Rowllin Borges, all capable of creating magic on their day, Sergio Lobera's side failed to get a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes.

They did hold the lion's share of the possession that occasionally resulted in hopeful efforts. In the 12th minute, Adam le Fondre's cross from the right wing found striker Bartholomew Ogbeche. The resulting effort though was intercepted by NorthEast defender Ashutosh Mehta. In the next few minutes, an Ogbeche header went over the bar while Jahouh took two attempts from distance. A clear-cut chance though was still eluding Lobera's men.

Then, the match took an unexpected turn as Jahouh, who was dictating things from midfield, was sent off with a straight red, a couple of minutes before halftime. His offence was a studs-up challenge on NorthEast's Khassa Camara.

Gerard Nus' men capitalised on their numerical advantage soon after the restart. The Highlanders were awarded a penalty in the 49th minute when the ball struck Borges' arm after NorthEast’s Dylan Fox had headed in a short corner. Appiah sent keeper Amrinder Singh in wrong direction.

With Mumbai now under pressure, NorthEast took control over the game with Khumanthem Meetei and Appiah making regular inroads. Lobera made a tactical change replacing Ogbeche with Stephen Goddard, giving Le Fondre a central role up front. Mumbai had a rare opportunity in the 65th minute when Sarthak got his head to a cross, but his effort sailed inches over the bar. Lobera's team kept knocking on the door in the final quarter, but an equaliser eluded them.
